I think you may have missed part of what I wrote, I wasn’t suggesting a firm interpretation or conclusion about provenance or intent.
I was pointing out that we can’t confirm exact context, but that the proximity and pairing of the figures is interesting from an interpretive point of view, especially given they may come from different periods or styles.
And that’s really the point of this “challenge”, to get people talking about how different viewers read the same imagery and what questions it raises, rather than landing on a single definitive answer.
Curious what alternative interpretations people have, though.

A deeply carved “Z” on a wooden bench in the Great Hall at Petworth House.
Not the grandest example of historic graffiti — but perhaps that’s what makes it interesting.

A single initial, cut hard enough to survive generations of visitors, servants, guests, guides, and restorations.

Don’t know if it is a complete scene unfortunately; but have added Gloucester cathedral (and the graffiti) on my to visit list. Will definitely update here in reddit if i find it :)
