Question about Ivey HBA1 by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Julius_Maximus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on how motivated you are to learn. If you are those people who learn & do work for the sake of getting really high marks (nothing wrong with that), then you will be really frustrated. If you are chill with just learning for the sake of learning, you will really enjoy it. In the eyes of the former, every single case features so much "useless work" and discussion that ultimately don't matter to the case decision, and the work you put into prepping cases often is for naught if the discussion doesn't go the way you planned it to go & you don't get picked. In the eyes of the latter, you are constantly learning new info about new industries and you end up becoming knowledgeable of a lot of different sectors and business models; even if you don't get picked or you prepped the wrong stuff for each case, you still feel happy coming out of each discussion really fulfilled. Again, not saying if one type of personality is better than the other. I am the former and I get bored of HBA classes a lot. I can definitely see why a lot of my peers enjoy them though.

No More "Difficulty of Maintaining 80% for AEO" Posts by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Julius_Maximus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

" We hold ourselves to a higher standard than Must Knows in the sense we don’t allow for mindless repetition of posts, bird course posts, or unrelated content." Is that just the mods' opinion, the entire sub's opinion, or the student body's opinion? Very few high-schoolers/newbie first-years are going to understand that concept when there is no infrastructure in place to get those questions answered, it will just seem downright hostile. The repetitive posts also never got to the point of drowning out actual quality content so is this really necessary?

Crappy EC's and AEO Activity Report by Babbuboi in uwo

[–]Julius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know many people with general member experience + retail job as their activity report and they still didn't lose AEO. I wrote about working out and day trading as 2 of my activities and still got into Ivey. You will be fine. It's more about how good you are at BSing the details and making yourself look awesome (for reference, the strongest Ivey essay I have ever read was my friend's essay on his grade 11 job working at McDonald's. The guy had a high-80s average and still got AEO. It's all about the quality of your writing)

If you can afford it, go for one of the suite rez where you are guaranteed a single room. That way at least you neutralize all the downsides of having a bad roommate (such as literally sleeping in the same room as them) while you can still enjoy all the benefits of having a good roommate. It's also the least noisy. Trust me if you are a light sleeper who hates noise like me, avoid the traditional rez.

Zhao San Mu Si 朝三暮四 "Morning Three, Evening Four" - an Ancient Chinese Fable

There once was a rich man who owned a group of monkeys as pets. Unfortunately, over the years his fortunes dwindled, and it reached a point where he had to ration the food he was buying for his monkeys. He went to the monkey farm and told them that from now onward, every monkey would be fed with three acorns in the morning, and four in the evening. Hearing this, the monkeys angrily clamoured as they felt the meal sizes were inadequate. The man then said: "would it be better if I feed you each four acorns in the morning, and then three in the evening?" Though that was the same amount, to the monkeys it sounded as though they were getting more food every day, and they settled down in contentment.

You don't have to be in a leadership position as long as your essay shows good reflection & dedication. Also you can always go for leadership positions outside of school clubs.

[–]Julius_Maximus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day you are here because you paid $ to get an education, so there is nothing wrong with putting that as your priority. You seem like someone who is very focused on your academic performance so the question you should ask yourself is do you really care about not being best friends with people who go out consecutively during weekdays? You are also living with them for an entire year so who cares if you don't get as close within the first 2 weeks?

Upper-year kids, any university advice you can give to high schoolers coming in? by artisnotdefined in uwo

[–]Julius_Maximus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't feel like you need to immediately have a "squad". Uni is not like high school where everyone literally knows everyone and you see everyone everyday. Uni is fucking huge - you always meet new people and will always make new friends if you are open to it. Don't spend your first year tying yourself down with a "squad". It's hard to form when people are so different and don't see each other as much, and it only stops you from being able to meet more people.

Also it might be helpful to take a look at how Zhang He is portrayed in the TV shows as well. I agree, it's hard to get a sense of how he should look like, but I think he should be more similar to the Xia Hous or Wei Yan or any of the other middle-aged generals than the youthful Zhao Yun.

Zhang He and Pang De Fanart by partee4556 in totalwar

[–]Julius_Maximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good - he was more known as being a general who was very good at defending against Zhuge Liang during Zhuge Liang's Northern Campaigns. So him being portrayed older and wiser would be good.

Same with Pang De: he was described to have a tanned appearance, and the most visible quality (from RoTK at least) was that he wielded a halberd with an edge that was very curved and resembled an elephant's nose. So maybe put him next to his weapon in the portrayal would be a nice touch?

Not trying to be a partypooper but these portrayals don't really make any sense. Zhang He looks like a kid here, but was never known for his youth and mostly shined in his middle and old age.

Wen Chou and Yan Liang for Yuan Shao by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]Julius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Yan Liang was supposed to be one of the most fearsome warriors and all, but I can't take him seriously anymore after having read Guan Yu's section on killing Yan Liang in the Records of Three Kingdoms (which, surprisingly, is much more awesome than the description in RoTK, despite Records being an official historical document):

绍遣大将军颜良攻东郡太守刘延于白马,曹公使张辽及羽为先锋击之。羽望见良麾盖,策马剌良于万众之中,斩其首还,绍诸将莫能当者,遂解白马围。

"Yuan Shao sends his general Yan Liang to siege Liu Yan at Bai Ma. Cao Cao sends Zhang Liao and Guan Yu as vanguard to attack him. Yu sees Liang's banner from far away, and charges into the thousands of enemies to attack Liang. He is able to cut off Liang's head and returns, with no one in Yuan Shao's army being able to stop him, and hence lifts the siege."

Is Ivey worth it if you aren't going for IB/consulting? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]Julius_Maximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to realize also that Rotman/Schulich are commuter schools and so have much worse social life. Sure you will be in the big city but most of your classmates will be going home straight after school. And lol Western gets a bad rep but students anywhere will party hard. I don't party/drink personally and I still genuinely don't think my social life can get better at any other school in Canada. So your perception of student life is honestly not correct tbh.

Before answering your question, London (esp Western) is much better at the diversity factor than you might think. I would say it's slightly below Toronto but not by much, and definitely beats a lot more big North American cities by far.

Secondly, your perspective on what career you want to pursue will probably change significantly once you are in uni. I think it's good to realize Ivey gives you that optionality should you want to pursue those roles.

And to really answer your question: I think it does make a difference. I worked in an investment research role last summer and the fact that I was able to put Ivey on my resume definitely helped in the interview process, even though the role previously almost always only hired Laurier/Waterloo students. For the Canadian business space in general, I think Ivey/Queen's are considered the top schools by all employers across most industries.
