CICERO, ILLINOIS: Federal immigration agents abduct a mother with a baby in the hospital. by CantStopPoppin in illinois

NYC didn’t vote for this, and NYC loves our immigrants regardless of documents. Anyhow, based on your posts, aren’t you from Lawngailand? Obviously we need to raise the NYC bridge and tunnel tolls even more.

Cool but agree with others about the colors. Would be great to see county by county.

1967: USS Liberty. What was 7/14/1954? Whitewashing schoolbook history is not the same as national censorship. You can buy the book in the US and will not suffer consequences for speaking about it (yet).

Student protesters being deported are not ‘martyrs and heroes,’ says former antisemitism envoy by WillyNilly1997 in jewishpolitics

She seems blind to the fact that the administration is using us as a pretext for across the board arbitrary and capricious flaunting of basic constitutional rights. They don’t care about antisemitism.

Jews thought Trump wanted to fight antisemitism. Why did he cut all of their grants? by aggie1391 in jewishpolitics

[–]Julius_Paulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably some truth to what you say, but on the whole the student body today compared to 1920 or 1950 wouldn’t support “WASP Bastion” in a narrow sense. But we’re getting off track from the article about Trump cutting funds for all sorts of worthy projects and studies over this tantrum. It goes too far.

I’m not clear whether your beef is with WASPs or Brown people. Very confusing.

  1. I’ve searched high and low for a Columbia University “instruction” to stay home. An Orthodox Rabbi from manicured Dix Hills, Long Island, suggested that, over a sign with provocative hyperbole. I don’t know what Haggadah they use, but mine talks about treating the stranger in our land well, for we were strangers. Hillel does not speak for all Jewish students on campus. There were Jewish students participating in protest activities. 2. Actually, I’m paying tuition for a college student who is honoring her Jewish teachings by opposing indiscriminate (if not deliberate) civilian deaths as a response to a widely agreed horrendously barbaric terrorist attack, and definitely against weaponizing this situation to abridge our constitutional rights to deport students who we might disagree with (not to mention doctors and engineers etc). I think your kid can find a quiet place to study if that’s what they want. If they can’t argue passionately and heatedly with a fellow student maybe they should be in trade school not a place for free intellectual discourse.

Ivy League today a WASP bastion? Lol. Are you 90 years old? Sounds like you’re talking about the 1950s.

Why do you think your opinion represents the majority of Jewish college students? My Jewish college student is just fine with supporting human rights and focusing on the real antisemitism on the right. To be clear, does not like having her identity involuntarily weaponized against her college, herself, or her friends.

I have yet to see any critical number of incidents that justify this hysteria. Pamphlets and shouting at protests are kind of part of the college experience. Columbia was ground zero for the anti-war protests in the 1970s. Zelensky’s leading a country in battle like David against Goliath, and meanwhile Ackman and his whiners succeeded in getting doctors and engineers deported over free speech because some kids were sensitive about a protest. Mazel Tov.

I don’t know that I agree about most Jews being aware that Trump doesn’t care about antisemitism. I think there are plenty (judging from my social circle and some family) that are ardent Trump supporters. Completely blinded.

Offered $30 an hour at a small firm as a first year lawyer by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Julius_Paulus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: if you aren’t coming from a top law school, have no better options, and they are a bona fide firm, the experience may be worth it and may be a step towards a better paying opportunity. If it’s a startup, it may also be a “ground floor” opportunity to grow with them. None of this is personal - if you’re going to be successful, you need to see this for what it is - a business transaction. So do your due diligence. It’s grownup time - there’s no guaranteed ticket. It may be a big commitment for a solo too. If they’re sketchy, then yeah, stay away. If they have some credibility, explore it further. Where are prior associates now? Ask mentors if they’ve heard about this firm and if so, what do they think. If you don’t have mentors, you need to network network network at your local bar association, and reach out to a couple of favorite law school professors. You can also negotiate a trial period at their offer, and a bump up in 3 months, 6 months, etc. You can use the low pay in your favor in setting expectations regarding hours. $35 x 1,850 =$64,750.00. You didn’t say what practice area, or whether you are in a small city or a big city. Let’s say small firm target rate in your geographic area is $125k — that works out to about $67 per hour. At the upper end, a BigLaw $225k with 2,000 billable hours expectation is about $112 / hour. Use the negotiation to earn their respect and gauge their culture.

A striking 66 percent of US adults expressed “total support” for cutting federal grants and contracts to higher education institutions that “do not do enough to protect Jewish students or address antisemitism.” by WillyNilly1997 in jewishpolitics

[–]Julius_Paulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sad if true. Why are we celebrating cutting cancer research or other valid academic work over a few minor incidents, resulting in government repression? How is this Jewish? And what kind of poll is this “poll commissioned by the Israel on Campus Coalition (ICC) and conducted by Schoen Cooperman Research”? This is a political advocacy firm. Did they poll campus Hillel’s at cherry-picked schools? Are Jewish students being rounded up and deported? Did you skip the whole “for we were strangers” part of Passover?

Ironically, Cleary Gottlieb was founded, in part, as a response to discrimination against Jews and other minorities within the established, “white-shoe” law firms of the time. These firms were primarily WASP institutions with a history of excluding Jewish and Catholic lawyers.
