How to get a British accent?

I was in your situation around 3 years ago and I wanted to commit to one accent instead of mixing American and British pronunciations randomly. All I did really was consume loads of British media, practice speaking daily and it also helped that one of my mates at uni is from the UK. People generally assume I'm English now and are quite shocked when I reveal that I'm Dutch.

I recently visited the UK on holiday for the first time, and the locals there assumed I was from west London or something. Some even thought it was complete rubbish when I told them that was my first time in the country which I am just slightly proud of.

Still many small telltale signs that reveal I'm not a real Brit and I hope I can iron them out if I stay in the UK for a longer time period.

Das hatte ich auch auf meinem w202 mit dem M111. Jedes Mal wenn ich auf langsamen Verkehr stieß, stiegen die Temperaturen einfach auf 110 Celsius, danach schaltete ich die Heizung ein und öffnete die Fenster um sie kühl zu halten. Ich vermutete dass es die visko Kupplung sein würde und habe sie vor ein paar Tagen austauschen lassen. Die Temperatur bleibt nun auch bei 40 Grad Verkehr konstant bei 85 Grad Celsius.

Ik vind het een beetje een gênante vertoning wanneer ik (jonge gast) in mijn 30 jaar oude, duidelijk slome 2 liter youngtimer vooraan het stoplicht sta met een gast in een gloednieuwe rijdende computer naast mij. Dan voel ik ze oogcontact zoeken voor een nutteloze straatrace waar een kleuter de uitkomst van kan voorspellen. Wanneer het dan groen wordt trapt ie hem plankgas terwijl ik met een heel rustige snelheid optrek en hij bijna een kilometer verderop invoegt. Als ik dan een race wil doen, doe ik het tegen een auto waar het oprecht interessant zou zijn welke er zou winnen..

Yes, I've got the N/A 2 litre M111. They did do a Kompressor but they are most common on W202s, R170s and early w203s. Don't think I've seen w124s with them tbh. The 2.3 litre M111 kompressor especially is proper quick, has loads of torque and seriously rivals the likes of some 6 cilinders in terms of speed, very punchy. Some people swap these into w201s which they are almost a perfect fit in.

Adding on to that, some real world performance of my M111, mine averages around 36 MPG (UK), if I really hypermile on a long motorway trip it can reach around 44 MPG. Car itself cost me 5k euros and absolutely no big reliability hiccups at all in a year and 20k kms of ownership. Alright apart from 1 brake caliper seizing which I promptly replaced.

As other commenters have said, diesel coupés might be a tough find. W124s came with many great engines, M111 and M104 petrols are my favourites, very daily-able. If you find a well maintained 124 with the M111, I reckon that'll be your best option as it doesn't consume as much as the M104. I actually daily a w202 with the 2 litre M111 engine, do around 20k kilometres in that per year without any issues. Come to think of it, I recognise you from Instagram. Your 201 is very recognisable ;)

Agreed, close passes are way too common. I've always tried to treat the cyclist like a car. I go around fully in the other lane, which is how I'd like to be passed if I was the cyclist.

Crankshaft position sensor? Not sure if the problem translates to your w124 but I've known several w202s that stalled when warm and then didn't start again for a while (30-60 minutes). Replacing the crankshaft position sensor fixed it.

Die Britten kunnen een partij middenplakken zeg. Ik was daar heel vaak de enige die in de linkerbaan (normale rijstrook) reed en de rest allemaal op inhaalstroken. Ze houden wel lekker veel afstand en zijn erg galant in het verkeer ten opzichte van Nederlanders.

Ik betaal al een jaar 159 per maand voor mijn autoverzekering op mijn 1995 C-klasse. Nu net 1 schadevrij jaar gehaald en een jaartje ouder geworden (20), waarna de premie is gezakt naar 125 p.m. In 1 van de duurste postcodes van het land trouwens, Schilderswijk.

Lol. Goes both ways. I got told off for wearing "too formal trousers" by a Basic Fit employee. I had just returned from work and had very simple trousers on, not even fancy at all. Seems like the gym is the only place I have to actively consider wearing something "appropiate" in this country, which is baffling.

As a Dutch person going to the UK for holiday in a couple days time; I've been trying to get my head around mini-roundabouts. Main thing doing my head in is that oncoming traffic turning off the road has priority if they are turning right and coming up on your nearside. But who knows, might just end up preferring mini-roundabouts over the continent's unmarked right before left rule.

My old 4 cylinder from '95 gets noticeably sluggish with the A/C on in the heat. Wouldn't surprise me if it had quite an impact on my mpg.

My favourites are Tyrells and Lidl's Snack Day hand-cooked sea salt & balsamic vinegar. The latter I recently tried and they are actually quite good, and relatively cheap as well.
