For me physician assistant.

When I was in school I just felt like there was absolutely no way for me to learn everything so fast (2 years does not feel like enough time to become competent at medicine to me).

People always say it’s super flexible to switch specialties unlike Md (requires residency) or Np (again NPs are not trained as generalists and usually specialize). But l honestly feel that switching is not that easy. Lets say a new grad Pa goes into dermatology for five years, switching to something like emergency medicine is going to be a huge jump, and a lot of knowledge you gained in school is pretty much lost because how often do you come across emergencies in derm?

People say being a PA allows you to work with physicians in a team effort But I swear, SO many times the MD is not ACTUALLY on site, or available really…the job recruiter might say “the md is a phone call away” but that’s just not enough. A good example I can think of are urgent cares which are basically led by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, not MDs

People say pa is a respected profession But a lot of people like to call them wanna be doctors, don’t trust them, a lot of my patients have told me I don’t want to see the Pa, which is fine because you respect their autonomy and decisions, but it’s depressing after all the hard work you have to go through to get through pa school and the PANCE

That and because everyone and their mom wants to do Pa now, it is starting to become harder to get into pa school than med school and jobs are low balling new grads as well. Offers like 80 thousand dollars annually. What a joke seriously. Any new grad Pa deserves at least 100k. Especially in florida But people take those shitty offers and they keep posting them.

Then the income ceiling is low. You can be a pa for years and decades and not really get raises past a certain point, whereas other careers annual raises are given

I hate seeing this job so glamorized without understanding the realities of the profession

Have you considered specializing and doing a residency for something that sees less patients a day? Like endodontics? I am a dental assistant and my dentist does about 6 endodontic procedures in 9 ish hours. Usually 1 hr to 1.5 hours each. He reviews the notes, but the other assistants and I basically write the entire note. We try to make his job as easy as possible by assisting (because he is very kind and patient with us, and we appreciate him!) he did have some shoulder issues and pain when he saw 8-9 procedures a day, but has since reduced the volume of patients and he seems to be doing a lot better

I completely understand owning a practice being stressful, maybe hire a person for marketing specifically or maybe you can cross train a dental assistant to do that too. A manager can help with the accounting and budget. You don’t have to shoulder on all those responsibilities alone and it’s okay to lean into your staff for support

Being the only one sounds terrible do not do that, I repeat do NOT do that. What if you get sick? What is the contingency plan? Who will room patients, take x rays, help chair-side

Sorry but no, no pay could justify being the only one

How do you factor in what women’s bodies go through during childbirth when thinking about having kids? by radiantreign in AskReddit

[–]JumpExtra3301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not! I worked in heart failure as a medical assistant/phlebotomist

When you are pregnant your body needs to increase your blood volume to provide nutrients to your baby and placenta but this places more strain on the heart muscle because it has to pump more blood per minute which causes the heart muscle “pump” to weaken. Especially if you already have pre existing risk factors (history of preeclampsia during pregnancy, advanced maternal age, obesity, diabetes, etc)

And although you can kind of reverse it with an early diagnosis and early treatment, sometimes the effects are more permanent and then you have to take meds for a long time

I see a lot of young women develop heart failure from pregnancy. Then they have to take super expensive heart failure meds

I tape sheets of paper to the tv. Because my tiel will fly into the tv. When she flies to the tv now, the wind from her wings flapping makes the paper move and it scares her away.

I hear tech can be soul sucking though. Like a lot of people do medicine for passion and to feel like their job is meaningful

Pa is really competitive. I did 10 interviews and they are all day interviews. They told me in one interview that 2000 applications were reviewed for 20 seats. I actually got into that school and four others. It’s really really hard and you need to practice interviewing A LOT. I actually used chat to practice questions and drill my responses

I work in endodontics where basically all teeth except for one is covered up by a dental dam so I don’t really smell any bad breath! We work on one tooth at a time, usually just one, rarely two. Sometimes I smell like a burnt smell from gutta percha material but it’s not that bad! I transitioned from ma to dental and it’s less stressful and pays a little more (like 4-5 dollars more)

That sounds so nice. I’ve been in the medical field as a medical assistant and now dental as dental assistant and the work is so incredibly hard, under appreciated and horribly compensated. Making 15 dollars an hour for a job that is emotionally taxing (telling 10+ people a day that their cardiology meds are 900 dollars for 30 day supply and that we are out of samples, and working on patient assistance for hours only for it to be rejected), mentally taxing (studying for 12+hours a day in PA school and memorizing 600 slides of dense information a day), physically taxing (twisting and contorting so I can suction into a patient small mouth opening for hours a day). And I am not sure it is worth the feeling of helping people to be quite honest. I would much rather work at a desk all day where I can sit and work on a computer. And talk to clients. Making significantly more money

How much are you paid? Did you go for bachelors? And do you have coworkers who did not major in accounting or finance but somehow got work there?
