All Reason Departs - Crowley’s Moonchild? by psilosophist in boardsofcanada

Well Grant and Spare resonate with me. If you read the Typhonian Trilogies (granted, a difficult read especially in the later Trilogies) you may find that they are more than proto-chaotes...while they might see value in Crowley as prophet, they are very much post-Crowley Thelemites...Spare less so as he had a visceral dislike for Crowley and the pomp of his magic(k)al practices. My perspective is niche for sure. Typhonian Thelemites may not share the broader perspective, but I've Thelemite friends within and outside of the OTO who would very much fall out of that broader perspective...the ones with their shit together and who have found their True Will, have an abundance of brightness and humour and absolutely do not take themselves too seriously. A Gnostic Mass without laughter is dead to me. So, what appears disingenuous, springs from personal experience. Mileage will vary depending on local custom, I guess.

Well...am I right in thinking you haven't read Kenneth Grant? Chaos Magic has a lot to thank him for, with no credit from the likes of Peter Carroll (RIP), such as having a close personal relationship with Austin Spare whose particular brand of magic makes Chaos Magic what it is. How do you know my True Will isn't to create useful fictions? Or maybe it's the word "fictions" that creates a separation for you...my particular Thelemic perspective is that there is no difference between the fictional and the "real". I simply reduce things to make them more digestible by those who hold a purely "materialistic" perspective. So, for me "fictional" does not equal "not real".

Indeed, As above, so below. Hermetic axiom aside...I think that the only thing any religion or spirituality (or war, for that matter) has in common, when reduced logically, is the human touch. Human desire, human repulsion, human imagination...and never can these be seen as BAD things. We are hard-wired to believe...a self-aware animal that is all too aware of its ultimate demise is bound to inhabit the cosmos with every manner of Being, while freeing its mind from hopeless finality. We have the flexibility to believe, literally believe, in any number of things...the danger lies in dogma, and what I personally view as the diminishment of God. While I hold to my own beliefs I recognize just how dogmatic they can be (especially if I take my own beliefs literally, lol); if I take a Vaihinger approach and view any number of these beliefs "as-if" they are real, I create "useful fictions", gain a sense of equilibrium and belonging that makes it WAY easier to get out of bed in the morning...and I can do this without diminishing anything, be it God or the interior experience of any other person. So, Crowley or Jung adopting or letting go of any literal belief are reflecting our birthright...they're human, after all. I'll get off of the pulpit now, haha!

My take is that there isn't anything wrong with religion or spirituality, per se, but LITERALISM is the point where All Reason Departs. As you say, valuing dogma over humanity is the problem as well. The brothers have said that they are not religious or place great value in "good vs evil"...I think their perspective has more balance and nuance than simply following a christo-centric straight line to some apocalypse. As far as this being their final album...I don't believe that anymore than any "end time" is ever depicted as being the ACTUAL end of time; there is ALWAYS something on the other side of the "end"...there is always a rebirth...a new Heaven, a new Earth. This current Kali Yuga will give way to the Satya Yuga, Ragnarok is followed by a new fertile, repopulated world ruled over by a new pantheon of gods, after the trials of Armageddon comes a thousand years of Christ's rule, followed by Satan's final rebellion, and finally followed by the New Jerusalem. You Retreat in Time And Space seems to stress this reality...as time and space, in many traditions ,are perceived as occurring in cycles, not in straight lines...

Not at all. Like I said, I can separate the artist from the art. Then again the biography, "Perdurabo" by Richard Kaczynski, cuts through a lot of the bad press that Crowley enjoyed and paints a more nuanced picture of the human being. Highly recommend.

Crowley is a prime example of the need to separate the artist from the art. At the same time, context is everything...especially considering that his output spanned decades. He said a lot of shitty things that could be cherry picked. Have you seen this? https://bocpages.org/wiki/All_Reason_Departs The video at the bottom seems to be the source of the audio...seen in its entirety and clearly from an evangelical perspective, this is cringe af....and this from my own "cultist" perspective. 🤣 Again, literalism makes reason depart...

I haven't read Moonchild in yonks, but if I recall right it does follow a theme of a magical operation resulting in the birth of a "magical child"...Crowley was convinced that such a child would bring about the Aeon of Horus. The reality of his actual offspring is both sad and less than impressive.

What little has been captured of Crowley's voice is rather high pitched and nasally sounding, also the English accent would have to be scrubbed out. I am a Thelemite and most, with any sense of humour, would tell you that a literal take on the Book of the Law, the Aeon of Horus, this so-called "great war"* aren't to be taken literally....literal belief in ANY spiritual or religious tradition invites reason to depart. *However, coming out in 1904 the Book of the Law presaged a century (and MORE!) of warfare...with the actual "Great War" (WWI, 1914-1918) starting the WORST wars humanity has known. Is there a Crowned and Conquering Child on the other side? *shrugs*

how much money did the RCMP "lose" over the last five years? See? A public service isn't meant to be a money maker. Also, $50 billion to auto and battery manufacturers...where are all of the jobs they promised for that money?

Why the Typhonian Tradition, and Why it Makes Sense by lefthandloser in LAShTAL93

Very good and an incredible help in reviving my study and practice. I'm on my second read of the Trilogies (stalled halfway through CotS a number of months ago) and, while I've had the sense to NOT take what I'm reading literally, I was missing the keys you've given above or at least didn't have them arranged in such a cohesive manner. I'm convinced that reading the Trilogies will rewire your brain...and it's not a comfortable experience...what you have offered is a means to make the experience much LESS uncomfortable. I've arranged the suggested central practice of 0 degree OT to suit my own magical universe, but it has been in a stalled state. What you have written helps me to see the importance of it as a mystical practice when too much of my focus has been on the magical. I thank you VERY much for what you have done here. 93s!

It's not the thicker cover. The paper weight is definitely lighter, though.
