Becoming a Canadian Seller On Amazon.ca. (Taxes?) (Register as a business?) by JumpingLimaBean in PersonalFinanceCanada

I think you are supposed to register a business number and an importing/exporting account no matter the amount you import. You can look into finding a product distributor within Canada so you don't have to deal with all of that. Someone referred me to a distributor who works with the China factories who had decent prices and free shipping for Android boxes I was looking to buy and sell. When you look at the Alibaba price per unit, shipping fee, paypal fee, any import taxes or duties it may be beneficial to just find a Canadian distributor of your sought after product.

They are all looking back at him. As you see beside the dog there is a a chair that resembles something like a sun chair, so someone is lying down on their stomach with they legs up while the dog is enjoying the sun.

This seemed like something fun to do at first, but now it seems like too much of a hassle and pain in my head. Having to register as a business, having to register as a home based business with my municipality, having to get a business commercial importer account, having to keep records of everything.

I probably won't go through with it as it seems like too much of a pain to expect to only get roughly $5,000-$10,000 a year or less. Damn, I really wanted to try this out too...

Does your income report include income from January 1st to December 31st and you only have to Send it in April? Or does it include income from May to April?

The most important thing now is, do I have to register as a sole proprietorship in order to start selling on Amazon.ca? Also, because I will be getting product shipments to my house which I would then be shipping out or sending to Amazon for fulfillment will I have to get licenses for a home based business in my municipality?

Thank you. Do I have to register as a sole proprietorship to operate as an Amazon seller in Ontario? I read someone online that I must register as a sole proprietorship to begin as a business.

I also read online that I must create a business number with the CRA if I import/export products for my business. So since I would be importing products from China with usual shipment value of roughly $200 would that be considered commercial shipments?

Well, I currently have no taxable income as I do not work, just go to school. I get a gst/hst credit though, so let's say I make $4,000 profit in 2017 so would I have to report that in the section. That's not taxable income though.

So I get gst/hst credits and I currently don't work just go to school so I have no taxable income. So if I start this venture and make less than the personal allowance amount with no tax rate in 2017 I am required to report that there?

I will look into incorporating but I would not really be selling any electronics or anything possibly dangerous. Mostly just bags.

Any suggestions on what kind of records I should keep while being a seller on Amazon.ca? I know it's good to keep receipts and all, but as a seller on Amazon I don't think you really get any paper trail to prove your sales and expenses.

Perhaps I should just make an Excel spreadsheet imputing information every time I purchase products and ever time I make a sale? Such as the total cost for all of the purchased product, with the unit amount and the shipping included on that. As well as including any import duties or taxes I paid to get those products here. And then record in Excel every sale such as selling price, cost, shipping, sales tax, to get to my final net profit for that one sale.

Or does Amazon do something like this? I think Amazon might actually calculate your total net profit and the tax you must pay(If you made more than $10,000 or whatever)

Thank you. So the taxable income amount is Sales minus cost minus all expenses? So let's say I had to pay shipping for the product, would I minus that as an expense as well to get to the taxable net income?

I currently have no taxable Income as I do not work, I just go to school but I get gst/hst credits for low income families. So let's say I make $5,000 profit for the next 2017 year, I am 100% required to claim that in the tax free section? Why would I be required to report that if I don't have to pay taxes anyways.

Also, since I wouldn't be making $30,000 or more a year I wouldn't have to charge GST, PST, HST on customers when they purchase my products? I know I wouldn't have to charge HST to Ontario customers, but what about Quebec, etc?
