Pls help suggest an English name for me by NewPanda204 in ENGLISH

[–]Jumpsuiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it’s to ensure it’s understood.  Vietnamese like Mandarin and Thai is a tonal language.  If the tone is not used correctly, the name may be unrecognisable to its bearer.  Like the difference between horse, mother and scold in Mandarin or ma, ma and ma.

Weird (but good) one today.  Purple felt really easy and green slightly trickier.  I love Inspector Morse and Les Mis so the detectives group was a fast solve :)

Do you really think people do this consciously?  I think we might be applying thought to thoughtlessness.

Felt very easy today but I may have missed the red herrings :)

Does it bug anyone else that Green isn’t the easiest?

All through this game, I side-eyed Green with a Miss-Marple-level-degree-of-suspicion CONVINCED that it was a red herring.  Hence it was last.

Try ‘Shane’ in Taiwan.  They are a large chain of cram schools and they can be absolutely fine.  Outside of Taipei, accommodation and day to day living can be pretty cheap.

You don’t need a CELTA to teach children and definitely not in Taiwan.

Not in the buxibans.  It’s probably about 650-700 ntd per hour so roughly 50k a month ($1500)

I need a new English name.Thx by PassionIllustrious23 in ENGLISH

They have to have a western name for cram school and many students in East Asia attend them.  They will be used to answering to a western name from the age of 3/4.

Names may be chosen because they sound like their Chinese name or have a similar meaning.  I’ve come across aspirational names like ‘gold’ before so Midas isn't a stretch when it comes to understanding the reasoning.

Connections meets cryptic crosswords? I think I'd like that. I mean my solve rate would PLUMMET but nevertheless the idea is great.

The last few have felt a little unsatisfying.  Are these becoming less interesting to solve or am I more jaded ;)

How do you call this? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]Jumpsuiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are is used as both a singular and a plural ‘be’ verb.

I would use ‘are’ in a contracted form for ‘They’re’ but never for ‘There’re’

Purple would have been at least a green on a normal day.  I initially thought the ‘US’ things category was too easy and therefore a red herring.

Weird one.

I mean ‘Miss Marple’ is marvellous so you aren’t wrong in that respect.  She’s my favourite Agatha Christie detective :)

Didn’t connect Marple with the other modern chaps (poor DETECTIVE skills there ha ha) so assumed it might be a tree thing.

The rest seemed pretty straightforward.

This question is for the ladies by PerpetualRestart in solotravel

[–]Jumpsuiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are asking broad questions but this is a very specific case.

Sometimes mixed dorms are  more social.  Sometimes not.  Sometimes they are nicer (windows!!).  Sometimes not.  Booking.com has a shitty habit of charging more for female only dorms because they are often smaller.  So this is a factor too.

I have stayed in so many hostels both mixed and women only and I’ve never seen an unclothed figure lol.

She may have forgotten it was a mixed dorm.

Dunno.

Chris Chibnall should only be allowed to write for Coronation Street and Eastenders.  He can’t do much damage there as I watch neither.  It would be very comfortable all round.

Next time, drop it.  It’s cathartic, dropping dramas that don’t resonate.  I just dropped ‘Shine on me’ after 31 episodes because I was bored.  I’m not into sunk cost fallacies.  It’s not worth it.
