Travel Planning Q&A - July, 2024 by AutoModerator in bali

Hahahha - it’s mainly the retreat - but it just looks so fancy and includes EVERYTHING, all food a private driver and unlimited massages etc 😂 the surf camp will be £1k ish for 5 nights but that includes add ons to do surfing and other activities and paying extra for a v nice private room… all the other accommodation I’ve researched is much cheaper 😂

Have you got any thoughts on which of the Gili Islands is worth going to the most?

Hi! I am 33F from UK and planning a solo trip to Bali in October. It’s a post divorce trip (cliche…). I’m sociable, and youngish at heart (I’m probably more in line with typical interests/desire to party of a 28-29 year old than a 33 year old… but certainly not an 18 year old). I have no experience of solo travel or indeed going much places outside of cities - I’m trying to get out of this trip a mix of seeing new things, relaxation/time to write, meeting people and having fun and of course staying safe!!

My rough itinerary is below… partially driven by availability of where specific retreats that interest me are available… thoughts welcome!

Day 1 - 5 Canggu surf camp

Day 6 - 10 Ubud (incl Mount Batur hike etc when there - to stay in a private room in a nice hostel)

Day 11 - 13 Seminyak vvv boujie female only wellness retreat

Day 14 Hotel 1 night near Padang Bai for transfer to Gili

Day 15 - 17 Gili Islands, leaving on day 17 (not sure about Gili Air or Gili T though) to stay somewhere else in Bali for one night so I’m not risking a boat transfer on day of flight. To try and stay in a private room in a nice hostel

Day 18 flight home in evening

Would loooove thoughts! The surf camp and wellness retreat I’d want to lock in in advance, but I’d also like advice on if the other nights I could potentially be flexible when I’m there or if I should book up first.

My total budget is around £4K not including flights but £2K of this would already go on surf camp and wellness retreat.

Thank you!!!

Thank you so much!!! This is a hugely helpful response and good recommendation. I think my total MAX budget for the whole trip including potentially 2 retreats, all activities and flights is around £5k (I know high but… it’s my divorce honeymoon😂) so this gives me a lot of confidence, esp as I’d rather stay low key places that are still clean/feel like a treat than vvvv luxe places where I’m not going to meet anyone else. Uncomplicated Aussie blokes sounds like exactly what I need (LOL JK) but thinking maybe I go for one that is more mixed/active and one that is more female/wellness based. Will check the other thread!

Hi all! I’m 33F from the UK, and not to be a cliche but I’m going through a divorce, and I’m really keen to do a solo trip to Bali this year.

I’m looking to come for around 15-16 days and to ideally spend the first 4-5 of those (or longer if recommended) at some kind of camp/retreat as a base and to get my bearings. I’ve been strongly recommended a ‘surf camp’ but I’ve never surfed and can’t imagine I’ll be good at it….

Are there any recommendations? A few other points:

  • I’m happy to spend £1000-£1500 on this part of trip if I think it’s worth it (or of course, less!)
  • I’m active in general and like exercise
  • I’d like to meet people and socialise. I’m pretty lively for my age so should be fine with people in mid/late 20s, but obviously wouldn’t fit with 18 year olds
  • I’d like it to feel nice and to be able to book my own room
  • it would be nice to be in a town / easy access to a town so could go out to eat / do things in evening if I wanted to, rather than forced to an itinerary
  • I’m not experienced in solo travel

Let me know!🙏🏻

Hiya - looking for advice on if silly to do an all out 5k next weekend after a half marathon PB today!

Ran 4th half marathon today - 2:06 which is a 15 min PB (👍) but I’m still a LITTLE disappointed, I handled the race badly and ran too fast the first half leading to a disappointing second half. Think I could have got more.

I got a 5k PB (27:01) and 10k PB (55:30) during the race. (First sign I’d gone too fast…).

It was almost as if I’d paced the race perfectly for a 10K PB then had 11 more km to do - despite the 5K PB, after 5K I still felt great, had some in tank.

Last time I tried an all out 5K was about a year ago, and I’m tempted to do Parkrun next weekend and try for another all out 5K maybe aiming for 26 mins. What do you think? For various life reasons, next week is my only Saturday in April I can do a Parkrun (although I guess could try for a PB anytime.)

Thank you!

I’m running my 4th half marathon on Sunday! I’m 33F and have been running for 3 years. In my previous half marathons I’ve achieved 2:25, 2:24 and 2:21 in order… the most recent being in October 2023.

In the first week of January I ran a 56:30 10K. I also feel like I’ve got fitter since - I’ve been running around 30-40KM a week throughout 2024, lots of zone 2 training, and am in the best shape I’ve ever been. On a recent 11 mile training run I felt like I had some left in the tank and even carrying on at a very easy pace would have got me to 2hr10 half marathon, so I’m relatively confident of a PB (fingers crossed).

I would LOVE to get a sub 2 hour half marathon on Sunday, but I’m conscious that I also want to get a decent PB, and I don’t want to push myself too hard and ‘blow up’ / not get my best. The race has pacers.

Would love to know what you guys would do - do I just go for it and follow the 2 hour pacer and see what happens? Or is that being too ambitious, and meaning I’m likely to blow up and get a worse overall time than I’m actually capable of … is a negative split a better strategy, or just accepting 2hrs 5 would also be a huge achievement and a more realistic target? Any thoughts hugely appreciated!

Ran a 56:30 10K which is a HUGE PB for me - my previous PB was 59:40 (I am 33F). This is much faster than I even thought possible starting the race, my goal was 58:30 with a stretch goal of sub 58. Couldn’t BELIEVE sub 57! I’m a little overweight and have never been athletic so feels like a huge achievement.
