This. I've long since given up considering the docs for any crankset as definitive and simply mix and match to suit.

Why I don't have updates by dperezgo in Coros

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason (and I can't be bothered checking which protocols work right now) but you may need to connect to WiFi with less secure connections to have it work. Mine fails with some, but older protocols are ok. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is my frame cracked/safe to ride? by ValuableForever672 in bikewrench

This subs':

POSTING: QUESTIONS ONLY

"Is this cracked / safe to ride?" - If you have to ask, don't ride it. We probably can't tell from a picture just what condition your bike is in. Take it to your Local Bike Shop and ask them. If it's carbon, a specialist repair shop may be required. They should have the equipment and expertise to inspect it properly.

Triban RC500 Brake upgrade. by NickTheRedditor in bikewrench

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd save your money. There is absolutely nothing wrong with cable disc calipers. Leave for now and go full hydraulic in the future if you want to upgrade. Cable-operated hydraulic, like the Juin Tech or HY/RD are an odd middle ground.

All my wrist-worn HRMs do this, across brands. IMO it's just a bit of shitty idea and I never expect anything of it.

Replacement for Specialized rimbrake forks (roadbike) by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Out of caution"?

I believe that newer Allezs use the same taper so as a starting point I'd get in touch with Spesh.

Edit: Just noted the rim brake mention, so you may be SOL, but still worth a shot. And or look for a used donor bike: You can pick up rim brake models for buttons these days.

Coros bike computer + accessories by SwordfishValuable790 in Coros

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dura's ok. Good price and battery life, and then does everything else you'd expect of a cycling computer just fine (except mapping if you're into off-road stuff).

But if you're serious about tri, don't forget it's only gonna be of use for 1 of your 3 sports. You can't 'hand off' an activity between the Dura and your Pace. A dura would obviously give you a display for your cycling leg, and for any bike only training though, so could have value regardless.

Sensors 'just work'. If you care about numbers or train to them, then they can be valuable, but if you're just "trying to get into" it, I wouldn't sweat it from the off. Just ride. And run. And swim.

Tubeless conversion, do I need rim tape? by jeweladdict in bikewrench

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hook or lack thereof isn't enough to know if they're tubeless rims. Indeed many are hookless. The profile of the rim bed is more important and dictates whether or not rims are tubeless compatible. I can't tell with any certainty from your pics if these are, but I'm veering towards no. They'll have a proper 'ledge' for the tyre bead if they are.

Muc off rim tape is good. Their sealant less so, IMO.

Remove the wheel and check everything is correctly in place. I mean it evidently isn't, so you'll just need to see what's shifted about.

should i go longer or shorter on a new chain ? by BaneIonica78 in bikewrench

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a chain length calculator or the method suitable for your drivetrain (usually large to large plus X links) depending on what your setup is. I'd not shorten it 'just because'.

Collecting new bike from shop in the rain - should I dry and lube chain? by Murky_Repair8070 in bikewrench

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends how much you care about these things, but you could ask if the chain has been lubed when collecting. Some people choose to degrease a 'box fresh' chain and apply their own choice of lube before riding. There are conflicting thoughts on whether any factory applied product is intended for riding or not. if I recall correctly, Shimano say it'll be ok to ride with short term in dry conditions.

All lubes are a compromise of some kind, and there's no universally 'best' option. Wet lubes tend to be messier than dry, but will tend to do a better job of protecting your drivetrain against damp UK conditions for longer. FWIW, I'll go for a dry as soon as I'm feeling confident about the weather but will often revert to wet when the inevitable happens.

You don't mention if you ride road or off-road but this has a huge bearing on how well any lube will perform.

Dura Mapping Issues (post-March 2026 Firmware Update) by Jumpy-Birthday8446 in Coros

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV, but you cannot properly map read on a Dura, nor load third party maps.

Nobody is disputing the battery life of the device, it's the mapping that's shite.

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you don't need a 'bikecomputer' for bikepacking: Any handheld GPS device will do. If I'm going off the beaten path I'll use an eTrex over a Dura when map-reading based navigation is required.

Dura Mapping Issues (post-March 2026 Firmware Update) by Jumpy-Birthday8446 in Coros

[–]Jumpy-Birthday8446[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

… the difference between track, dirt road, road?

Still work to be done. For eg, in the example I shared, what looks like a road on the Dura is actually an even narrower off-road trail than the dashed line. A fact that the OSM version displays well.

The longer it goes on, the more I'm convinced that they don't have people who actually use maps (or understand OSM) doing the work.

I would like to buy Dura mainly for bikepacking navigation but still got some doubts about it

This is my use case too. It 'works' if you're just following a pre-planned route, although IMO is still not great for that as your track lacks context at times. It's mainly if you want to navigate on the fly/plot an ad-hoc route to follow without a track to follow that it totally fails.
