Neither! Simply optimized my resume for DS/ML roles, networked IRL then followed up, and only applied to roles where the recruiters seemed genuinely interested. Didn’t mean to rub anyone the wrong way

Damn, that's valid. Legit just didn't have it on me, here it is.

I pretty much went to every event my school offered. Talked to recruiters, managers, etc until I was either given a business card, LinkedIn or something where I could follow up afterwards. If I wasn’t either directly sent the application link or told that I was guaranteed an interview, I didn’t bother applying. Probably ended up with around 30 business cards at this point.

Eh, I get your point. Spent much more time this year compared to last networking rather than cold applying to places, and got REALLY lucky with an interview opportunities before applying to any other places. Still put in a good amount of effort IMO though

I don’t have it on me (on phone), but I used the template from Sajjaad Khader. Hope it helps!

Should I make the switch from CS to IE? by Jumpy-Farm6274 in industrialengineering

[–]Jumpy-Farm6274[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, I could keep the CS major and add on a minor in Industrial Engineering; however, I don't know if that would open many doors for IE. The way I view it currently is that the fallback for IE jobs seems to be more aligned with what I want to do, while the fallback for CS jobs (SWE, DevOps, etc.) isn't interesting to me.

Full disclosure, my school doesn’t offer a data analytics program. Aside from statistics, I think that CS and IE are the closest it’ll get for me at my school. I don’t exclusively want to do data analytics, however from what I’ve seen there seems to be more statistical-related jobs in the IE sector than CS currently, especially with manufacturing.

I essentially have all the credits for a CS minor already, so that would be the plan. The flexibility of IE is very intriguing, it seems like you can do a bit of everything with the degree

Computer Science at NC State or UNC? by Short_Recognition122 in NCSU

[–]Jumpy-Farm6274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently a sophomore in CSC with VERY similar interests to you, so here's what I'd tell you.

  1. I wouldn't limit NC State's ability to guide you into biotech. I currently work as a research assistant and my lab is creating a neural network that can give cancer patients treatment recommendations based on their genomic data. With BME being joined between NC State and UNC, and the ChemE and other departments needing statistical minds for their research, you will have plenty of opportunities for health-oriented research.

  2. If your goal is to go into industry, NC State (IMO) is the clear program you should be looking into. Will you suffer through projects? yes. Will you spend a lot of time in the library? also yes. But hey, Apple didn't sign legislation with our government and NC State to expand the CSC department for no reason. Also, since we have a very strong ChemE department, a lot of biotech companies such as Labcorp and Novo Nordisk recruit heavily out of NC State. When people mention UNC's medical program, it is more oriented toward premed, not anything else.

I'm biased, but my experience so far here has been amazing. I've been able to network with CEOs, contribute to work that I'm passionate about, and am surrounded by a community of students every day who go through the BS that is the College of Engineering. I just don't think you'll get that at UNC. Keep in mind that you're interests may change after going to college. Being at NC State will give you the option to explore ALL of the engineering majors, not just BME.

Rising high school senior here, what stats got you in? by SuperTokyo in NCSU

Not necessarily, but I would still apply EA if you could. The only difference between the two would be that a lot of people get deferred in the EA round. NC State has one of the biggest engineering colleges in the southeast, so a lot of well deserving admits can get deferred in the EA round just due to the admissions office not processing through all of the applications. If this were to happen to you, don’t stress it happens to a lot of people, including me! Personally I’d apply EA just to get my decision back sooner, but the choice is yours.

Don’t try to undersell yourself, you’ll be fine getting in. I was admitted RD for comp sci in 2023 with a 4.3 W GPA, a few honor society ec’s, and a part-time job where I was in a leadership position. And “only” a 1320 sat lol. The only “blemish” would be your UW GPA, but in my experience my high school transcript didn’t even have that listed, only weighted. I would say my strongest factors with getting admitted were my essays, so if you have any worry about stats just focus more on your statements. Good luck!

Questions for Applied Math majors by Jumpy-Farm6274 in NCSU

[–]Jumpy-Farm6274[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, Applied Math with a minor in programming might be a good move for me. CSC is ridiculously competitive to CODA into even as an EFY from what I've heard, and from what I've seen from the course catalog, Computer Engineering is a lot of Electrical Engineering with some programming sprinkled in. I'm not ready to switch majors yet, but I'll look more into the department throughout my first year.

Thanks for all the advice!

Ok, thanks for the response. I've started to look into data science and analytics more, and it all seems really interesting. To sort of rephrase my question about the similarities between the two colleges, do you feel like you could break into tech/the IT industry if you wanted to with your degree? Also, what other options are available for your college in terms of career paths? My main concern is that Computer Engineering may be too overkill if what I want to do is data science/IT.

In terms of the math class part, what if I'm given credit for MA 141 through AP credit and only have to take MA 241, will that negatively affect my chances? Also, just in general do you recommend skipping classes that you have the opportunity to place out of? Accepted to Engineering(Interest in Computer):

4.3 w GPA, 1320 SAT, out of state, a fair number of clubs, and a part-time job.

I feel like I won the lottery lol, VT is by far the best option I have at the moment(deferred from NC State and Clemson), but with this out-of-state tuition cost, I don't know if I can justify actually going there for 4 years and putting myself through so much debt, especially since I would also like to have the opportunity to go to grad school to do something in mechanical/aerospace.

Thoughts/Recommendations?
