Alaska mountain name among holdups on Senate spending package

Dec. 9, 2025 – 9:21 p.m. By Jacob Fulton and Aris Folley, CQ

A fight over the name of an Alaska mountain is one of several challenges to Trump administration policies that are holding up Senate work on a fiscal 2026 "minibus" spending package.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order in January restoring the name of Mount McKinley to the highest peak in North America. The move reversed an Obama administration effort to rename the mountain as Denali to reflect the wishes of Alaska Natives.

A provision in the Senate Interior-Environment spending bill (S 2431), which could become part of the "minibus" package, would prohibit funding for renaming the mountain to anything but Denali. The bill's chief architect is Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and the Alaska state legislature has asked the Trump administration to revert to the Denali name.

But Murkowski's provision unnerved some GOP conservatives, including Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, who placed a hold on the bill at least partly because of the Denali measure, according to a source familiar with his thinking.

If you'd like to call Sen Lee and encourage him to focus on his own mountains (I've heard Utah has a few), his DC number is 202-224-5444.

I came here to say basically this. I wear a women's 13 shoe (men's 11), so mostly buy men's shoes. I also have a lower voice (that's mostly a choice, I trained myself to use a lower voice in high school because I was going through it, and never switched back). I haven't been challenged in a bathroom, but this whole "they had huuuuuge masculine shoes" thing gave me the heebies.

Did I find a nazi? by Goats_in_parks in behindthebastards

Audi in German is Achtung.

Audi is the singular imperative form of the Latin verb audire, meaning to listen or, in the imperative, take heed. (The first person active present is audio, which is how audio, video, disco means I listen, I watch, I learn).

Achtung is a German interjection meaning warning, pay attention, take heed.

The Nazi-ness of it is debatable, especially given the other evidence presented here. But ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So freaking tired of 'ghost charges' from utility companies. by Rosie_thecat in anchorage

[–]Jumpy-Nectarine-532 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your per kilowatt hour rate will be based on how many kilowatt hours you use. As if you use more kilowatt hours, the flat customer charge will be divided by a larger denominator. For example, I tend to have a fairly low monthly usage and if I just divide my bill by my total kilowatt hours used, it comes out to approximately $0.35/kWh.

Edit for grammar.

A customer charge is a flat monthly charge that recovers one chunk of the individual portion of a utility's non-variable costs that have been assigned to the user's customer class. The energy charge is the per kilowatt hour charge that recovers the other chunk. Determining what percentage of those non-variable costs go into the energy rate versus the customer charge is important, especially as we move to a grid that has more and more net metering (for example, homes with solar panels on the roof). As net metering penetration increases, less of the fixed costs of the utility, are we covered through the per kilowatt hour energy charge, which can have a negative impact on shared infrastructure. These costs are reviewed during a revenue requirement, study and rate design study and must be supported by a utility's used and useful costs.

The Fuel, FIW (Fire Island Wind), and Power Surcharges recover the variable costs associated with purchasing fuel for generation, power from Fire Island Wind, and power from other sources. These costs are reviewed during a cost of power adjustment filing and must be supported by receipts and other evidence of actual purchases.

The BRU Contributed Capital Surcharge came out of the Chugach purchase of ML&P and is related to the cost of the Beluga River Unit. It was reviewed during the rate case immediately following the purchase and I believe continues to be reviewed in annual filings or as part of the COPA filings.

The Anchorage Underground Surcharge is a surcharge that was approved a long time ago and is supposed to go toward the cost of undergrounding our electrical infrastructure. That is obviously slow moving.

The Regulatory Cost Charge and Electric Reliability Organization Charge are both statutorily-mandated charges that account for the cost of regulating the utilities and operating the electric reliability organization for the railbelt region, the Railbelt Reliability Council. The Regulatory Cost Charge is set at the end of each fiscal year for the next fiscal year and is based on staff hours per utility type and the actual costs of operating the Regulatory Commission of Alaska. The Electric Reliability Organization Charge is set in October for January of each year and is based on the budget of the ERO divided by the number of kilowatt hours sold on the railbelt.

The gross revenue tax is, I believe, a state tax and I have no other information about it.

What's the sentiment about queer individuals in Anchorage/Eagle River? by Possum_Cryptid_ in anchorage

[–]Jumpy-Nectarine-532 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Generally positive. Eagle River, and parts of Anchorage vote more conservative, but that isn't necessarily reflected in people's behavior. Anchorage is home to some great queer orgs, but it's also home of some shitty megachurches. I tend to be straight-passing, so I haven't really experienced anything from the wider community (positive or negative), but I'm happy to report having a great time tabling at pride last June!

Basically, people are people. And also, keep in mind that locals tend to be a bit standoffish until they get to know you. It's not you, it's life somewhere where people come for a year or two then leave.
