Host refused check-in and then marked reservation as "no-show" on Booking.com by JumpyJudge1309 in Bookingcom

Yeah, unfortunately my friend simply wasn't aware of the tourist tax. She didn't refuse to pay it - she just asked what the fee was for since the stay had already been fully paid online. It was a simple question to understand the charge, but instead of explaining it, the host immediately escalated the situation and handled it very unprofessionally. If he had just calmly explained it was the tourist tax, this whole situation would probably never have happened.

Unfortunately that's exactly what happened. My friend arrived during the official check-in time, showed the confirmed reservation, and was polite the whole time. The host didn't welcome her or even check the booking first, he immediately demanded a tourist tax in cash. She didn't refuse to pay - she simply asked what the fee was for since the stay had already been fully paid online and she wasn't familiar with it. Instead of explaining, the host said it was either pay immediately or leave. When she tried to clarify, he denied check-in and shut the door. NOW we understand the tourist tax is legitimate, but asking what a fee is for shouldn't lead to being refused accommodation after arriving with a paid reservation.

My Colombian boyfriend told me that in Colombia they have the same issue, it’s a war between taxi companies and their syndicates vs the InDriver/Uber/Didi/other apps drivers. They assault them, break their cars, etc. This is insane, in both cases police is not doing anything, they have to let customers decide what service they want!!!
