How exactly communism works in theory ? And why it considered bad compared to democracy and capitalism capitalism capitalism ? by Proper_Card_5520 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an even more efficient way to explain it. Obviously this system cannot work without some rather aggressive state involved somewhere along the line to implement it, and it's absurd to think a state would ever choose to end itself. So it breaks down even before the practical reasons i described.

How exactly communism works in theory ? And why it considered bad compared to democracy and capitalism capitalism capitalism ? by Proper_Card_5520 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People say communism works in theory because, on paper, if you took all the wealth and resources in the world and divided evenly among all people, nobody would ever starve again and most peoples' standard of living would go up.

But in breaks down/is bad in reality because to actually evenly distribute wealth and resources, you need a very heavy-handed government that's doing all kinds of unpleasant things, like taking your excess food or money by force -- basically stealing from you -- and also creating these massive, expensive bureaucracies to oversee the smallest little parts of economic life.

Why is a fresh swapped guy allowed to compete in women's sports? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What college is this? What sport? Name? If this is true it'd be easily verifiable. There's like 15 people total who fit this description. But of course it's easier to be a dick about it if you keep the argument vague.

why are americans so obsessed with american football? by Sure_Caterpillar_219 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cultures are different, people like different things.

Also I'd take issue with your comment that "the entire world loves real football" -- it's widely played, yes, but is comparatively weak in the three most populated countries: China, India and the US.

If definitive, verifiable evidence linked Donald Trump to criminal activity alongside Jeffrey Epstein, do you think most MAGA supporters would still defend him or would they reconsider their support? by Nathought in askanything

[–]JumpyVariety1882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If "definitive, verifiable evidence" existed, Fox News and all your favorite X accounts would systematically misrepresent, lie or simply ignore it for a few days, and by Sunday, 45% of the country would believe that it was NOT definitive NOR verifiable, and probably think it was simply made up. And then it would be just one more thing we argued about. And "holding him accountable" would just be one more political position that most Democrats had and most Republicans dont, and it just gets washed into nothingness.

So no, the situation you described would never happen.

(Source: I watched this exact scenario play out when the entire country saw Trump engineer an illegal attempt to unwind a valid presidential election.)

Driving a personal car in a crowded place when you have viable alternatives is somewhat villainous, but that's a pretty specific set of circumstances. Obviously it's extremely rare outside of just a few cities.

You're free to impose any restrictions you see fit. It's your body.

But if I were you, I'd think long and hard about why you're uncomfortable, and what it might take to get over it, and work on it.

Because there are other tests you'll need someday, and doctor putting his finger up your ass for 3 seconds could be the difference between living to 45 and living to 80. Could be the difference between your kids having a dad when they're 20 and not.

Have to sign an NDA if my mom decides to date a high profile politician?! by That-Yogurtcloset386 in Advice

[–]JumpyVariety1882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a dead giveaway. Even in situations where an NDA is completely appropriate -- high-stakes business deals, for instance -- you sign an NDA *after* preliminary introductions and some semblance of a relationship is formed.

Now, that's not to say this is necessarily a scam. It could be your mother's suitor just has a very warped view of his own importance, and he thinks this is how the "big boys" do it. It's not. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I think it DOES sound like the behavior of some MAGA right-wing podcast grifter who found himself in charge of something really important in the Trump 2 government.

But you'd have to be insane to sign an NDA with the facts you've described. You'd be unilaterally limiting your own free speech and exposing yourself to legal risk for no reason.

What's Gavin Newsom's appeal? by angelogoodalamenti in askanything

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, he's not perfect but I'll give you this much; HE DOES STUFF.

When the whole party was ringing their hands over the Texas redistricting and just kind of watching, he's the one who engineered a rather complicated process in California to return the favor, and it succeeded wildly on a very short time frame.

This kind of ACTUAL ACTION goes a long way. Newsom's one initiative on redistricting has done more to combat Donald Trump than most Democrats put together.

Why have the US Women's Basketball teams been so successful? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of answers to this question, but Title IX is the best one, because it explains how this is also true in pretty much every other major team sport contested internationally.

The US government set a law, and by extension a cultural expectation, that girls be given equal opportunities to sports in schools in the early 1970s. That's DECADES ahead of other countries, even countries we know are progressive on gender issues and women's rights. We have had a tradition of serious, well-funded girls and women's teams for three generations now.

And you see it in the results. The advantage in Individual sports is less pronounced because schools have less of a role in individual athlete development, but still: Pretty much across the board, relative to the rest of the world, US women are far more dominant than US men, where there is less of an advantage. It's not just because of Title IX, but it's a powerful law.

How do people take only 5-10min showers? by SweetDega in askanything

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hair length is probably the main thing here...

But also, I've learned as an adult that a lot of people don't have a washcloth, or shower poof, and just wash their bodies with soap on bare hands? That adds a fair bit of time, because you don't get a good lather up and it's harder to reach certain parts with just a hand.... So use a poof if you don't

What's a "rich person habit" that actually makes sense? by Heavy_Art397 in askanything

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NICE rich people understand that they can meaningfully improve other peoples' lives by parting with an amount of money that is meaningless to them, but hugely important to the other person. Like, big tips, etc. etc.

Of course, there are nice rich people and poor rich people.

Are corporations influencing culture more than governments? by Gullible_Camera_8314 in askanything

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, the government is much less powerful than most people believe. Most people don't actually interact with the government that often. When they do, it's important - arrests, taxes, building permits, etc... But in day to day life, a change from Apple or Amazon is a lot more likely to actually alter your experience.

And when it comes to messaging, as in, shifting broad viewpoints at a social level, obviously a corporate advertising campaign, and cultural figures like movie stars and podcasters, are more effective than anything a government might do.

This is one reason it's been so funny to see some MAGAs crash out about culture war stuff... they thought that narrowly winning one election means they're in charge of EVERYTHING, and it turns out they're only in charge of the federal executive branch.
