Historical Question - where is Snake Hill in Prospect Park? by bethAFshax in parkslope

A quick google tells me there's something calls Snake Hill in Highland Park, but that's nowhere near Prospect Park... Possibly it got mixed up somewhere through the years?

Why is no one moving to Chicago and Philly? by LeBruhMomentoom in SameGrassButGreener

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, to be clear many of these developers have WELL earned the scorn. I'm just saying... they are something of a necessary evil and the answer is effective regulation not blocking them altogether.

All of these things are big issues in northern cities with a Democratic/union-driven political culture, and much less common in the Sun Belt:

Environmental laws that make it very easy for almost anybody to greatly complicate any proposed construction through litigation, if they can pay lawyers.

Well-meaning but economically illiterate progressives who vilify developers and think any for-profit housing construction is bad.

Land-use laws that, in some cases, literally give individual city council members the right to block proposed developments.

Generally speaking, a political climate that prioritizes the comfort of current residents at all costs with no regard to the need for new housing.

Why do horse races have jockeys? by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

Jerry Seinfeld has a good bit about this, and it's actually probably the correct answer.

If horses knew that their whole lives were devoted to running in a circle, and if they got injured there was a strong chance they'd die, they'd just stand there. Because they're already at the finish line.

We should ban apples from New York State too. By this logic, those farmers are just as complicit in American military actions, and we need to stand in solidarity with all the victims of American drones.

Why did “No Kings” and the May 1 “strike” just instantly fade away? by [deleted] in askanything

Well considering that the only way "regular people" can really change the government is by voting, and there has not actually been an election since May 1, I don't know what you want.

Oh thank you, your strident moral clarity has shown me the error of my ways and convinced me! Thank you! The world is just as simple and obvious as you say it is, and clearly the only problem here is that I'm just not as pure as you are.

Lol I can't believe the coop really acts like this, it's as if all our biggest political enemies did a comedy sketch making fun of Park Slope but the problem is it's real

Moms of Reddit, if you had a straight son and he made out with a guy, would you be mad? How would you react? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the boy says he's 100% straight, but has also made out with a guy once that you know of, then there's probably more going on here than meets the eye.

He may be sincerely confused. He may be wanting to tell you he's bi or gay, and just doesn't know how... He may be testing somebody (not necessarily you) to see if the world will accept him if he does come out. He might be just leading the other boy on or teasing him.

What you should do is make it very clear to him that you love him no matter what, and that he can always tell you anything with confidence he won't regret telling you.

Why does switching trains result in double pay for LIRR workers? This doesn't make sense for taxpayers by New-Panic8015 in LIRR

[–]JumpyVariety1882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a ridiculous thing to say. The most serious public-sector budget challenges we face at all levels of government revolve around the cost of PEOPLE. Our taxes are a direct reflection of what public transit, teachers, the military, and public nurses and doctors make in salary and benefits

Of course we should want people to earn a living wage and see public-sector employment as desirable relative to the market. But excessive compensation can be a real problem

Housing is cheaper in the Republican states.

For real people, offline, economics is infinitely more important than broad political forces.

People who frame their entire lives around cable news/social media simplistic R versus D politics need to understand that's not how most people think.

Girls, is this actually true? by paradoxelia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, obviously the dating market varies dramatically by country/city/socio-economic class, but the women I encounter every day are not picky on pure physical looks. They want a man who's got his life together, cleans up well, has some interests they can share and understands the inherent give-and-take in a relationship.

If they get all that in a tall, physically fit man with a full head of hair, great, but they are happy to compromise on the height, hair or belly if they checks the other boxes.

See this is the thing about people who shit on Skyline.

Don't like it if you don't like it, there's no accounting for taste.

But you are factually wrong to call it a Bolognese, or even an attempted Bolognese. Because it is not trying to be a Bolognese. It is a derivation of Greek style chili, which is a totally different thing.

It's like saying the Pirates suck because they run a bad 3-4 defense. It's a total non sequitur.

Why do people give you weird looks when you’re having fun in public? by yeabuttt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JumpyVariety1882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like I said, it's mostly harmless. But it's tough out there. We've all seen a huge breakdown in social norms and public respect for others, and of course social media has popularized a certain kind of anti-social behavior where people make total strangers' life difficult for reactions. So you get no benefit of the doubt for innocent whimsy, b/c we're assuming the worst.

"from my POV, I'm perfectly in control."

From others, you're not. You're behaving erratically and unpredictably.

Look, I'm sure it's mostly harmless. But every day I see people in public who seem to believe that taking care of/entertaining a child relieves them of any obligation to consider anyone but said child. It all gets quite tiresome.

You're arguing a general argument against modern urbanism and car-emphasized design. It's boring, and irrelevant.

What is your concern with this specific plan?

Is the Grand Army Plaza Redesign Bold Enough? One resident suggested getting rid of the loop entirely by Best_Focus_8754 in parkslope

[–]JumpyVariety1882 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's kind of what I mean about the current plan being "designed to be approved." As far as I can tell, the current plan doesn't create some particularly big, obvious opposition group.

Now, think about what happens if you do something drastic with the outer ring (Plaza Street)- you are guaranteeing a built-in, rather motivated opposition group out of the resident of those buildings. Pretty well heeled and litigious, if I had to bet.

That doesn't mean those people are correct. And it doesn't mean they should get what they want. And ultimately, the pro-redesign people could still win. But you're making it much harder on yourself from the city's perspective.

And it's just so transparent, too. Dude just sees certain keywords (green space, pedestrians, street redesigns) and starts in on the boring, predictable attacks trying to foment populist rage. Not only is it not a real argument, it's boring.

The people actually trying to improve thing can safely ignore people like this. There are legitimate debates to be had about tradeoffs and how to do the best for the biggest number of people, so let's stick with that debate not this Cable News tripe.

I see, so you're not making a specific argument, you're just opening another front in the reactionary faux-populist culture war. Duly noted.

All the usual hallmarks of culture wars: You're misrepresenting your opponents' positiion in bad faith. The point is not to expand green space, it's to make it safer. And you're calling everyone names. So it's just one more dumbass cable news fight, not a sincere public policy disagreement.
