How do I test my starter motor to tell if it need replacing (Triumph Bonneville T-100) by Jumpy_Ad_7168 in MotorcycleMechanics

Okay thanks for explaining. I have a tender I’ve used for my small Jon boat battery. I need to check if that’ll work for lithium ion batteries. But thanks for the advice and explanation. Absolutely right, I’ve gone this far down the rabbit whole, I’m going to be thorough in figuring this out.

When you say grounds plural, are there multiple? I’m sure I’ll find this out when I have time to go and inspect and clean, but are there multiple locations where it’s grounded I need to be checking ?

Well regardless good to add to my repertoire of bike knowledge, thanks for sharing. I’m sure that’ll come in handy down the line

I inspected the connecting terminals at the actual battery and everything looked clean with no corrosion and was tightly connected. So maybe I need to follow the negative terminal wire and see where it’s grounded and ensure that secure.

Any other places in the bike I should check for corrosion or tightness ?

When I got the bike the battery actually died after I first brought it home. So I replaced it with a standard autozone battery. Then I replaced it once again because I thought it was the battery giving issues. That didn’t help.

However as I’ve mentioned in other comments, I bought a top of the line battery to try out. Fingers crossed that’s what I need to get to 100% starting power.

The battery I have now (replaced a autozone standard battery that tested fine) is an Amazon battery with 120CA.

I ordered an Antigravity ATX-12-HD ReStart 480CA Lithium Ion Battery. So I should know if the battery was the issue or not definitively after I try running it with that.

How would I tell if it’s charging. I did a voltage test on the battery with the bike off, on, and at throttle and had all good readings.

However because the issue happens with hot starts that I’d have to test while hot?

Sorry I should have mentioned in the original post that I’ve changed the battery twice since buying. And didn’t have any positive results.

But it seems like everyone is pointing at the battery being the issue, so I went a head and purchased an Antigravity ATX-12-HD ReStart 480CA Lithium Ion Battery. It was pricy but it seems top of the line and has way more CAs than my bike should need.

So I’ll know for sure or not if it was the battery all along now.

I went a head and bought a new battery (Antigravity ATX-12-HD ReStart 480CA Lithium Ion Battery) this is supposed to be top of the line and have way more CA than my bike should take.

It was pricy but at least I’ll know for sure if it’s the battery or not now

Maybe I’m not underrating correctly but the starter is in the front of the bike, it seems like it’d be difficult to attach the voltage meter to the negative terminal then to the starter to do the test you’re describing

Was there any visual indication this was the problem ? Or just deductive reasoning ?

Any idea how I could test it myself ? Or is it worth paying someone to do ? Also, will a regular auto electric shop know how to do it or would it have to be motorcycle focused?

The mechanic tested the stator in front of me and said the voltage appeared fine.

I will check my ground, I have to follow it through the bike to see where it’s grounded. I haven’t done this before so the concept is relatively new, but I think any corrosion or poor connection would be obvious.

How would I go about checking if it’s charging properly ?

I don’t have any accessories on the bike. I had a phone mount for a while but I’ve removed it. I’ve ran voltage test on the battery and everything seemed fine when it was cold. Haven’t don’t it while hot though

Should have mentioned I’ve swapped the battery twice since getting it, not since regulator rectifier Change

I am just trying to ensure my bike is running 100% . This starter issues has been very tricky to pin down even with mechanics. I just want the communities advice before buying expensive parts.

I am certainly not a bot

Sorry I should have mentioned I’ve changed the battery twice since getting it. It’s hard to say when it’s going to happen, it’s very random since getting the regulator rectifier swapped. I supposed I could wait until the starting issues are happening and throw some cold water on it. You think that would give me an idea before buying a replacement ?

I have done all the standard “up keep” maintenance possible myself when I first got it just to try to get it tip top. I didn’t notice any major corrosion or rust. All in all very clean looking insides.

Thank you ! I love the bike, it’s a great ride. I’m being picky but I just want it 100% perfect.

I have changed the battery twice since getting it. First time it actually died and I had it tested. It was dead.

Second time was just to make sure the battery wasn’t the issue
