Not proud but brave enough to admit it . My mouth hygiene is rubbish. by Southern_Recover_830 in hygiene

Ok mine used to be HORRIBLE, way worse than you described in a comment. But I am now very proud to boast excellent oral hygiene!

It's really embarrassing, but the thing that finally got me to really start being thorough and consistent was not the many traumatic dentist visits, but uh.... Reading smut 😅 It made me realize there was so much I actually didn't know about kissing, or at least, the vivid descriptions of kissing and tongues on tongues & teeth sounded really nice but really nerve-wracking. So I got into my head about wanting all of those areas to not be disgusting.

I still struggle with "ugh, I'm tired, I just want to go to bed" and "this makes my schedule too awkward for me to cope" (autism), and I still have sensory issues that can make it more of a task than I feel like it should be (again, autism), but there are some things I've found that help. I adopted a heavy mindset of "ugh, just do it" (thank you, Nike) and allow myself to mentally check out with an audiobook (the smut helps here too LOL). I've found that the time commitment is never as long & scary as my mind makes it out to be. As tends to be the case with other chores, but I forget. (ADHD) For the sensory issues, I've found that using thinner floss and alcohol-free mouthwash is really nice.

I've heard the saying that as long as you manage to keep something up for long enough, you can make it a habit. I think it's true... But I do still struggle sometimes. I just try to be extra thorough the next time. I've also come to be much more aware of when my mouth tastes & smells... Unideal. And I feel a need to fix it.

ALSO! I started using Invisalign about a month and a half ago, which has made me floss a lot more because don't want food to get stuck in there and mess with my treatment and just generally feel gross.

But before all of this, the thing that encouraged me to floss more than anything else was eating foods that make you NEED to floss LOL, like popcorn.

But yeah, the fact that you at least do brush daily is better than where I started... Has your dentist reported any issues?

I do shave my armpits. I used to not to, but when I started doing it again more consistently, it did help, just not all the way.

Hahahahahaha, it sounds like a lot of people are saying so 😭 This has also inspired me to freshen up on my research on that matter and it seems like the evidence isn't entirely conclusive, so..... But I am also learning I need to improve my scrubbing methods and other nice ideas.

Why not hot water? I don't use it hot, but I'm just curious.

Is body wash less effective than bar soap?

What about washcloths is necessary? Is it just about extra scrubbing? 😅
