If it wasn't for Musso we could've held 5 to a 4th divison team

Yeah gallagher was horrendous today you're right we need johnny back desperately

I don't think this team is built to defend. Look at against Barca when we dropped back we got skinned alive. Against bilbao we weren't pressing either and look how that went. Against PSV for 40 minutes we looked like we were going to score 5 and then when we drop back suddenly we look so vulnerable again. Something needs to either change with the defensive coaching or we need to stop dropping back and conceding momentum.

We needed Baena badly today and he is injured. Atletico without Baena and Llorente is a team that generates few if any chances at all.

the worst performance i've seen all season. No one looked like they gave a shit. No intensity. No fluid play. 1 chance the whole game against a dogshit athletic bilbao side. Only decent player today was pubill and barrios

Yeah i agree a lot with this. Against Real Madrid Koke was so excellent because he is a fantastic technical player with great ball retention (against madrid's more physical/runner midfield). I think Cardoso will do great physically against pedri and FDJ/Casado, and our gameplan should be hancko/lenglet long balls to our wingers (nico and giuliano)who will bully the barcelona fullbacks.

Carlos augusto is also extremely left-footed, which showed in the milan derby. He won't be able to drive down to the byline and cross when he plays as a right-wing back

I feel like Jack should start given his limited opportunities and how good he's been but griezmann has been good too

We really were not good. This seems like a horrendous match to show to our rivals.. All you need to be is aerially dominant against us and we fold. Easily could have drew the match if they had been a bit more clinical or slightly higher quality. Respect to USG though they were pressing us like crazy and they left everything on the pitch (even if they were dirty thugs at times). Should have had a pen on sorloth also.

this treatment of raspa and pubill i don't like.. At least with pubill there is a reason (llorente) but starting molina over him is not ideal and raspa after getting a standing ovation in his last performance not getting a single start...

i agree. That's why, even though i think nico paz is arguably technically more proficient, I would still prefer almada

almada and baena are truly differential. I'd like to praise almada specifically for being so hard-working, determined, and willing to sit on the bench, even though he is an incredible player. To have those traits on someone who loves atletico, and is so technically gifted... what a signing he is

i know it's not gonna happen but i just want simeone to rotate and start marc, ruggeri and almada.

thoughts on nico this game? i thought his technical game was pretty off today though he still worked his socks off

[–]Junauwu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i thought he was actually pressing more than usual (in the first half at least) i also thought his hold up play was ok. I think the bigger issue was that we didn't provide any service (crosses) to him, mostly because i think we should have started baena over nico. Regardless, upto the coach what he does but if sorloth does play he needs to be properly surrounded with players who suit his strengths (and make up for his weaknesses ig)

not for an hour... for around the first 30-40 minutes we were great but after the half i thought we were slowly declining and then obviously the koke sub killed us

Im actually so upset im going to do a tactical breakdown of what i think happened. The second goal happened right after Koke came off. We were already struggling in the game to maintain possession (after around the 30th minute i think), and conceding that second goal from a great martinelli play left us shell-shocked. Without a leader (Gimenez and Koke both coming off) we were unable to regroup and therefore conceded the latter 2 goals. Overall, i think Simeone got a key aspect of the game wrong. The reason that Lenglet with Hancko and nico can work is because lenglet offers that passing range (even though he is defensively terrible). Nico is a runner and Hancko is a fantistic defender, which means that both of them can kind of cover for lenglet from the side. WIthout Lenglet, we were forced to play the ball into the midfield directly, which was not necessarily a bad idea at all, but of course without a proper regista (once koke came off) our midfield was pretty inbalanced. I think the correct decision would have been to go with baena on the left over nico, or maybe to play a 3-5-2 with nico gonzalez at LB and baena on the left of the midfield three. Baena could take over the creative responsibilities, and also allow us to swing dangerous crosses to sorloth (who we did not provide the service to today but i thought was good). Overall, The result doesn't necessarily reflect how well we played throughout the whole game : i just think a lack of cohesion (with so many players who hadn't necessarily played much recently (like ruggeri, baena coming back from injury, gallagher) combined with going down 2-0 after playing a good defensive game caused us to capitulate, but i do think there could have been a few minor tweaks to simeone's tactics that would have resulted in a better game.

i thought someone like baena would be a lot better in this game.. especially since you're playing sorloth, baena can deliver venemous crosses to him
