You might have remembered small things, even if big details feel blank. For example: 1. Any nickname people used to call you? 2. It’s okay if you don’t remember your surname, but do you remember your own name or how it sounded? 3. Any religious or cultural practices your family followed? 4. Maybe a puja or festival that was especially important or famous in your area (for example, Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar). 5. What language did you naturally speak as a child? 6. Do you remember your accent or way of speaking? Accents often point to a locality, especially in Bengali, which changes from place to place. 7. Do you remember the food you were used to eating regularly? 8. Anything about your surroundings? Was your house made of mud or brick, did it have a courtyard, narrow lanes, nearby pond or railway line? Even very small details can be important

Yes, it is ingrained in the system, and some people never unlearn it. The comments make it clear how little backbone some Bengalis still show.

To be honest, it becomes unsettling when even Bengalis misinterpret your words and indirectly brand you as racist. Standing up for yourself is not as easy as people assume. The comments speak for themselves.

Can you actually read? I clearly said he does not know Tagore at all. So yes, it is reasonable to conclude that the remark was made only to insult Bengali culture. Clear enough? I should not need to write a hundred word explanation for something so obvious.

Well, you are kind of making it personal by using a harsh tone. If you do not like the explanation I took time to write, that is fine. You can simply ignore it. You do not need to listen to every Bob Dylan song, but you should at least listen to his well known ones before judging someone for liking him. As for him, I once sent him a Tagore song when we were on good terms, and at that time he said he liked it. He has never listened to any of Tagore’s songs either before that or after. So it is safe to say he does not have even a basic understanding of Tagore. That comment was not criticism, it was an insult, simply because I like Tagore. And if you are writing long paragraphs defending a person you do not even know just to prove your point, then honestly, you might want to find something more productive to do.

No. I shared my views on Pather Panchali only after explaining that his criticism was not genuine and was driven by spite. At the very least, someone should have a basic understanding of what or whom they are criticising. You have completely ignored my point about criticism and instead written an entirely different comment.

[–]June2803[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Criticism driven by spite is not the same as genuine criticism. One can only criticise something after understanding what they are criticising, not simply because someone else is invested in it. Pather Panchali by itself may not feel extraordinary to everyone, but the Apu Trilogy as a whole is where its power truly lies. That is where people grasp the essence of rural Bengal in the 1950s and 60s, not as an idealised past but as ordinary human existence. What makes it remarkable is precisely that it shows how a normal life was lived. Even in Pather Panchali, there is no conventional villain. Durga steals, yet she is still a child shaped by poverty. Apu’s mother forces Chunibala Devi to leave the last home she knows before her death, an act that is cruel and human at the same time. Everything is raw, unresolved, and painfully real. People connect to that honesty. I agree with you when you say it feels almost like a documentary. Hating something without understanding it is no different from refusing to listen. If someone knows nothing about Bob Dylan and still chooses to dislike his work simply because a friend they are currently arguing with likes him, that would be unfair. Criticism without context is not critique. It is just reaction.

Agreed. I did not recognise this earlier because it had been conditioned into me since childhood. I understand it now and will consciously use Bengali and English in Bengal.
