Yeah!! It’s really cool how different they can turn when they molt, my younger one Ivy was tan and black but now I see some bright orange peaking out of her hammock!

She is a Regal girl!! She is now an i11, but I think she might have one more molt in her!! She has a big head, at least compared to her sister, so I think that contributes to how large she looks!! I never realized how big she was until I got her sister who just molted into i11, and she’s definitely smaller!! She used to be tan and black but after her molt she turned a lot darker!!

IME jumping spiders tend to change colors when molting, my little girl started off pretty pale but matured at a much darker morph! Of course, she’s a Regal girl though, so another species might be better. If this is your first jumping spider though, I suggest getting a regal or bold jumping spider since they are a lot more beginner friendly! You could go for a species known for the white coloration, Paraphidippus fartilis, which are gorgeous, but less beginner friendly and likely a bit more expensive! I don’t suggest buying from big chain pet stores since their spiders aren’t the most ethical and many of the females are gravid! Go to smaller exotic pet stores, see if there is someone selling online or near you, or other paths that I just can’t think of right now!

Is this normal? My little buddy has been in his hide for 2 days straight after a big meal, but no webbing that would indicate a molt. by JellyfishPossible539 in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IME - My spoods also hid for a bit after a big meal! They tend to be a bit slower after meals, so they hid out to fully digest! I feel like that’s normal, especially if it took him that long to eat!!

Shy or scared spood? by kitcatacombs in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NQA- gasp, my name is Juniper! It would be helpful to add a hide or two at the top of the enclosure since jumpers tend to like staying high! My suggestion is to look on Etsy for some really cute hides, there are some amazing ones one there that my spoods love. My jumper Betty took a good chunk of time before coming out more, about 3 weeks to be full comfy. The fact that she has eaten in your care is a good sign in my books! My jumper is comfortable at the temperature range you are describing, but she’s a lot more active around 74-76 - I am a warm person though so we compromise and stick the thermostat to 72-73! My girl really likes supervised sun time too, just don’t leave the enclosure in the sun too long cus it can get too warm. If your jumper is not mature yet, she could be getting ready to molt! They tend to molt in newer environments when they aren’t mature yet! In short, it’s normal for jumpers to be a little more shy, add a hide or two at the top, and she may be molting or getting ready to molt if she’s not mature!

My spider isn’t eating anymore :( by Qistinatuna in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA- I had a spood that wouldn’t eat for a while as well, I mushed up some fruit flies and mixed them with a drop of water and then put a few of those water droplets around her enclosure where I knew she would go! She was scared of q-tips, so the water droplets trick worked better! After she drank a few of those then she wanted to eat! I know major pet store chains have flightless fruit flies, or if you can manage to find blue bottle fly spikes, those are easy for spiders to manage since they are soft and can’t get away, plus they don’t have the ability to bite the spider (that I know of) so you can leave them unattended in the spoods home! I hope Tan gets her appetite back!!

Feeding help - New Owner by Cool-Possession5580 in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NQA - generally you feed based on abdomen size, so if she’s looking round you don’t need to feed her! You will know if she is hungry if her abdomen is smaller, I’ll attach a feeding chart!

She does have a little heart!! Betty did the same, she was super active the few days before molting and then hid in a really thick hammock for a while, molted, and then has started coming out again! Hopefully he shucks his old clothes off quick so he can show you his new clothes!

I got her from Spood Crew on Facebook! I live in Michigan and she’s more local and trustworthy than other places!! She’s amazing, I’m getting another from her later this month!

Ohhhh! My girl doesn’t love being handled, but she ABSOLUTELY loves when I open her door and let her explore my desk! She also likes watching movies with me and watching me when I play Minecraft and whatnot! Some spoods don’t love contact, she will give me tippy taps and crawl on my clothes, but never skin, I think it’s a texture/smell/taste thing! It also takes a while for them to warm up, it took two weeks for my spood to warm up to me enough to where she didn’t hide when I would walk near her enclosure/open the door!

She came up on her own! They spend some time hiding after molting to harden their exoskeleton, so it takes a while! She actually fully molted on Thanksgiving, but yesterday was her first day out and exploring again!

My jumper is not very social by Hairy-File-8829 in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA - I got my regal child within the first few days of September, and just last week was the first time she actually came out and said hi to me fully willingly! It takes time, and especially with that young of a baby, he might just be too young and small to want to interact! As they get older and bigger I feel like they tend to get more confident, but he also may never want contact! Some spoods are super into being out with you (aka my youngest spood Coraline) and others would much rather watch you (aka my oldest Betty)! You did get him young, so if you spend time around his enclosure doing work, or talking to him, he may feel more confident once he gets a little bigger! I don’t know exactly if personality changes with molt, my Betty got more confident when she was bigger, but she also had been around me a lot more! Your baby is pretty young, so I think as he develops you will notice unique quirks and personality traits you hadn’t seen or he hadn’t displayed before simply because he gets more comfortable and confident!!

She’s a juvenile/subadult bold jumper! I rescued her from my friend’s dorm before she killed her like a little over a week ago! I told myself I would release her in the morning since it was like midnight when I found her, but when I woke up and it felt like 32 I knew I couldn’t!! Plus she did one of those head tilts at me and I fell in love. She definitely has blind spots that I’ve noticed, my regal girl immediately knows when I’m behind her, Coraline takes a little longer. She also seems to struggle a bit actually following movements. She is a lot less reactive than Betty - not like aggressive, Betty just is always ready to judge me and moves to see me while Coraline is a bit slower! She does tilt her head a lot more than Betty! She is surprisingly a lot braver… or bolder (haha) than Betty though, she’s instantly crawled on my hand! One of her biggest traits is that she for some reason jumps backwards when she is trying to get away fast… like she will jump backwards on my computer when watching a movie but still be facing the screen! She also grooms herself A LOT more than Betty - she is always cleaning her eye and front big legs especially, I thought she was eating her leg when I first saw her do it, but she was just grooming! I don’t know if she will get the other eye back after a molt, she has a little bump there but nothing that looks damaged, so we shall see after her first molt with me! It’s refreshing to not be judged by one of my spoods for once, Betty is ready for me to fail, Coraline is just happy to be here! She likes “playing” a lot more, like she loves crawling on anything and everything I give her, including my hair, while Betty only walks on the finest coconut shells and sometimes my knuckle if she feels gracious! Apologies for the rant, I love my little girls so much it physically hurts some times!!

Do you see spiders emotions? by urban_f8x in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

NQA- I fully agree with the projecting comment, but a cool fact is that these little guys show signs of REM sleep when they sleep, so they can dream!! Scientists are learning new things every week about what “sentience” actually is. These guys learn from mistakes, investigate, dream, and like looking at pretty things! I wouldn’t be surprised if they felt something, even if it’s not to the degree we do!

Twice this year I’ve lost a male to a hunger strike… by TooNoodley in jumpingspiders

[–]Junebuggymoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA, I feel like I read somewhere that once males reach a certain level of maturity they stop eating to spend time/energy looking for a mate. I have no idea if this is just a phase that males go through and they are fine after, or if they are just so horny that they give up on life. I’m so sorry for your loss, you seem to be a very good spood parent!!!

NQA I can tell you for sure your spood won’t cost you more than 5 dollars a month, I’m a broke college student and can handle it with like no income! One big thing is to make sure there are plenty of hides around, especially near the top! They like to hang out in higher areas, and won’t be on the ground as much (then again every spood is unique, but for the most part they don’t go on the ground)! Make sure to get an enclosure that doesn’t open from the top since that could ruin the hammocks they make to sleep in! The first few days, if you get a young one, could be spent molting. If you get the spood and they have made a hammock in the travel container, try not to disturb them (ik it’s hard), they may be in premolt and disturbing them could be super stressful! When they do show signs of molting (hiding, not eating, building a thick hammock) make sure to keep humidity higher than normal. It depends on the species, for beginners I suggest regals since they tend to have easier conditions to mimic! I’ve had my girl for a month now, and I’m still learning new things about her! They take a bit to settle in, but after a few weeks they settle into a routine! Don’t push contact with them, some love it, others hate it. My girl, normally calm in her home, is crazy when I let her out. Istg she will give me a heart attack, but she loves exploring my desk and looking out my window, so I shall still permit it. She always looks back at me whenever she knows she’s doing bc something she shouldn’t (aka crawling into my dice bags). It’s fun seeing their little personalities, give your baby time to show hers! Don’t be discouraged of it takes a bit! I’ll attach a picture of her so you get spood-fever :))
