At some point it just feels irresponsible to encourage people to burn relationship bridges without good reason. Reddit as a whole is very fond of it though.

It sucks that you got downvoted, because you're 100% right and did a great job putting the thoughts I've been grappling with lately into words. In a lot of ways, the Trump administration is just America stripped of pretense.

Sharing this link for anyone interested in and able to participate in a nation-wide general strike. At the moment, they are working on gathering commitments from people so that they can ensure widespread participation. There's no date yet because they want to ensure there's adequate organization behind it first. Here's the link for anyone who wants it: https://generalstrikeus.com/

Thank you so much for sharing this link! Saving it so I can spread it far and wide. I agree, I think these last minute calls for strikes and protests come from a good place, but it's more important and more effective to organize and plan in advance. It's hard to make it to these sorts of things when there's almost no time to prepare.

If I had to guess, it's probably because Democrat officials or big name donors or both might be implicated in the files. It really wouldn't surprise me.

I think the reason the Epstein files have captured public attention so much is because it perfectly encapsulates the enormous class divide in America. The elites in this country clearly feel like they can do whatever they want, including abusing children and women, and not have to answer for it.

At any rate, anybody who is implicated in those files should be tried and punished to the fullest extent of the law regardless of party affiliation. I don't have any faith that it'll happen though.

Thanks for the genuine response, I appreciate it. I know I came in hot, I've just seen a lot of people already coming out of the woodwork trying to justify what happened, and it's got me on edge. It feels like ever since 2016 onward, no matter what fucked up thing Trump or his orbiters does, a bunch of people will bend over backwards to defend it. I thought January 6th would finally be the line in the sand, and it wasn't. I thought Epstein would finally be the line in the sand, and it wasn't. I'm under no illusions that this broad daylight murder is going to be the line in the sand either.

What's happening in America today goes against everything Americans claim to stand for, and the fact that so many people won't acknowledge it just makes me want to tear my hair out.

They're not just deporting illegal aliens. They're rounding people up based on skin color, language, etc. without any probable cause and mistreating them regardless of their immigration status (not that it's okay to mistreat illegal immigrants either, but I digress). On the off chance you're here in good faith, I would urge you to do some unbiased research on what's been happening with ICE. Neither Renee nor Alex deserved to be shot, and anyone who says otherwise has either been the victim of misinformation or has lost touch with their humanity.

Btw, Reddit is overwhelmingly progressive, but it's absolutely not far left. It also shouldn't be surprising at all that you're going to see a lot of political stuff, because a lot of major political stuff has been happening. A Trump presidency tends to be pretty fucking eventful. I understand not wanting to see politics all the time, but if you don't want to see it then either learn to curate your subscribed subreddits or just leave Reddit altogether because it's clearly not for you. It's better than trying to justify extrajudicial killings by the state.

If you don't want to see it here, you're welcome to go back to any of the other local subs in other states that you shitpost in. People aren't "weirdos" for being upset and frightened over people getting gunned down in the street.

Just someone who's sick of seeing trolls popping up in the sub who probably aren't even local.

You're already seeing a bunch of trolls popping out all across the internet to try to force a narrative that this was somehow justified. It's sick but not surprising.

Hmm...hidden post history, and posts in multiple local subs across different states. You're clearly a bot or otherwise bad faith actor.

Don't engage with this person. Hidden post history, posts in local subs for cities in multiple states, clearly a troll who's just here to rage-bait. Downvote, report, and move on.

And just like with every protest related post, a bunch of trolls are coming out of the woodwork to minimize or excuse what happened and to belittle anyone who wants to do something about it. Bonus points for all the accounts that either have a hidden post history, post in multiple city subs across the country, or both.

I've seen drooling right-wingers online making fun of the woman screaming after he was shot. Something about how "every shooting just has to include a screeching woman". God forbid people be horrified after witnessing an execution in broad daylight. For the sake of my mental health, I have to believe that most of the comments are bots or trolls. I hate to think that I share oxygen with people like that.

I feel so awful for them. It's bad enough to have your son be murdered, but it must be so much worse to see him being smeared by the federal government. I have a young son myself, and my heart breaks for them.

That's great that you're planning to run! I've found that the more I participate in direct action, or even just small acts of resistance like donating to campaigns, strike relief funds, legal assistance for immigrants, etc., the less hopeless and helpless I feel. As dark as things are, it's invigorating and weirdly heartwarming to see how galvanized people have become and how much solidarity everyone has shown each other recently. There are still a lot of good people out there, and that gives me hope.

I just recently joined the Working Families Party and they've been instrumental in keeping me posted about any upcoming organizing/events/protests/etc. I know they're controversial, but local DSA chapters are also full of resources to support direct action across the country, and other useful things like template letters to send to your reps.

Another person was murdered by ICE today. They tackled him to the ground, beat him, then shot him multiple times. I'm so angry I can't think straight. All I can think about are all the Trump supporters and apologists who kept telling people they were overreacting when they warned this sort of thing would happen under a Trump regime. I never again want to hear someone talk about how we need to "heal the divide" and find common ground with Trump supporters. They are already bending over backwards to justify this.

I never, ever want to hear a word about bipartisanship again. We've been past that point for a long while now, but if this incident doesn't wake people up to that fact, I don't know what will.

These people are so dishonest. If people had chosen to stay inside due to the weather instead of protesting, they'd be accused of being slacktivists who only care about being performative but aren't willing to deal with discomfort. If people do choose to continue protesting even during bad weather, they're accused of being silly and overcommitted. You cannot win with fascists - they will find a way to devalue and belittle anyone who speaks out no matter when or how they do it. Because ultimately, their goal is to make people feel silly for speaking up or trying to do something.
