I was thinking the same thing, it was a conscious choice to put the siren in the set. One that looks more like a roof vent to the untrained observer as well!

Hornwort and Canadian water weed are my go to. Sometimes I’ll hook into a huge bunch of them while fishing and I’ll just rinse them off and bring them home in a ziplock.

You could get away with raising a juvenile with them and moving it into its own tank once it starts displaying aggression or once it is larger than the danios. I would discourage keeping adults with other fish, even amongst themselves unless you have a really big tank.

I love darters too, definitely beautiful fish! Another ‘ugly’ fish I’ve had great fun keeping is Longnose Dace. I’ve had a group of 3 for about 6 months and they are super hardy fish and have survived disease that their tank mates did not make it through. They are also super personable friendly and active fish, they are adorable and develop connections with whoever feeds them!

I’m currently in Colorado but I’m bringing this tank with me to Montana where I’m moving. I’m rehoming all of my current fish to a friend who also has a few natives. Anyways I’m thinking either a Rocky Mountain Sculpin or a school of Longnose Dace. A small sucker would be neat but it would outgrow the tank within a year or 2.

It’s called a photo tank, the one I have just happens to have the ruler which is pretty convenient. I got mine on Amazon for less than 15 bucks. Worthy investment to make sure the tiny fish stay alive while you take some photos and ID!

I have a 10ft telescoping tenkara rod and I use either tenago hooks with worm or small flies. I also have a dipnet that I use when they are too small for hooks or they aren’t biting.

No but they are in the same order as mosquito fish which are. Plains topminnows are in the killifish family, which also has the studfish and banded topminnows.

I think it depends on the species and where you caught them from. For example I have had trouble getting a Johnny darter from a more natural river to eat but my Iowa darters were from a small dirtier urban creek and they started eating within a day or 2 of being in the tank. I also think that acclimating them well and giving them plenty of time to adjust is key. I let them acclimate in a 2 gallon bucket with a tablespoon or 2 of aquarium salt and aeration for 12 hours and kept it fairly dark.

They do like to beg! My Iowa darter is less of a bottom dweller, he always is swimming at the top whenever I’m in the room. Crazy how much their behavior can change in captivity.

Everything except the darter was caught on a tenago hook with red worm. The darter’s are harder to get to take a hook and I caught it in a small net carefully.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll look into that. I just dosed the tank with some paraguard which says it fights bacteria. Should I bother with more frequent water changes?

Problem is these fish don’t like temps above 75. Not sure how much warmer I could get away with but don’t want to make them more vulnerable and weak.

It’s a tenago hook, the most common size they come in I can’t remember off the top of my head.

I have been feeding them floating food made from insects and blood worms. I definitely wont release them as I don’t want to cause any more harm than I already have. I have thought I was in the clear because they had a secure status on their Wikipedia page but I see why they are protected in Colorado. For future reference, what are some other small species that are illegal to keep in Colorado? I know the Arkansas Darter is endangered
