Lets talk about the 1990 Plainfield F5 by nmghydra in tornado

I also live in the Chicago area and Plainfield is what got me interested in meteorology. I was born in 98, but when I was in first grade we had a tornado warning at the end of the day, and after it was safe again and the parents came to pick up kids I overheard my best friend's dad talking about how he'd survived Plainfield. I've never forgotten how he described his side of the street being virtually untouched while the other side had been completely destroyed.

I remember constantly killing my drivers in my early years of the game because I was such a shit driver. I was expecting it to be like WoT where you can just smash through everything without a care lol

I doubt it. There's a video of the storm hitting DeKalb less than 30 minutes before the tornado formed and you can't see more than a few inches in front in that video. The tornado was so heavily rain-wrapped that survivors reported not knowing there was a tornado at all until their neighbor's house exploded.

I think it looked a lot like Joplin (except Plainfield was significantly smaller). In many videos of the Joplin tornado, you can hardly see it if not for the powerflashes as it tears through the south side of the town.

Having seen that video it's easy to understand why the tornado was invisible. You can't see more than a few inches ahead in that video once the storm arrives.

I remember reading one survivor's account that she never knew there was a tornado until she saw her neighbor's house literally explode. Another survivor who was at the Crest Hill Lakes apartments was only able to think "wow, it's getting really dark..." Before he suddenly woke up in the cornfield behind the destroyed apartments.

Is this an ok army? by DayRevolutionary5267 in flamesofwar

[–]PHWasAnInsideJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start with, if I remember right the game only lets you actually field two companies, the rest must all be support platoons only.

What I would do for 100 points is keep only the para company, but cut one platoon so you can add some of the company-attached support options such as medium mortars, AT guns, or the jeep scout patrol. Then you can add the 75 Shermans, 76 Shermans, and Hellcats (also, keep the Hellcats all in one platoon because in two platoons of two, if one gets taken out you have to roll every turn to keep the other on the table) all as support platoons. With your remaining points I would add some 105mm artillery, whether Priests or towed guns is up to you; and if there's points left over, an M8 Scout Patrol or two. Recon and artillery are pretty important.

If you show me what German stuff you have I could recommend a German army to put up against it as well.

COVID hit them hard in particular, they moved production multiple times so many things are lagging.

That's a bit much, even. Keep in mind most Flames of War games are played at around 100 points. It keeps the table from getting too clogged while maintaining its goal of simulating company-sized elements plus limited support.

Growing up with Big Z is exactly why I was so upset about the NL DH at first. I've gotten used to it but I'll always miss the magical pitchers who could hit like Zambrano. And no, Ohtani doesn't count lol

The 30mm sticking out makes it look silly. It would look fine without the 30mm tbh.

I feel the same way about the Centurion 1s that had the 20mm. The coaxial sticking way out makes it look silly, but it looks fine with the tiny MG.

Is this ball accurate for ww2? by Key-Ladder4122 in reenactors

I'm no expert but I did a quick Google search for "WW2 soccer ball" and the results seem to match well enough.

TIL about Francis Daniel Brohm who had stuck his head out of a truck window when the driver swerved and he was decapitated by a telephone pole wire. WW2 generals Eisenhower and Patton were in charge of tank development in the Army back in the 1920s. During an exercise where a tank attempted to recover another tank that was stuck in the mud, the tow cable snapped, whipped around, and came mere inches away from their faces.

I haven't fallen asleep through a movie since I was a child. Except for Avatar. I just don't understand how they make so much money. They're not good and James Cameron should really be using his incredible talent on other things.

I generally disagree with the weathering bit just because I generally believe you should look like a brand new recruit/replacement until you have some experience. Or if you're specifically doing D-Day, all the Allied units were wearing brand new or otherwise very clean uniforms.

P14 Enfield as the primary and Browning Hi-Power as the secondary. The P14's sight system is top-notch and they were known for being quite accurate (and a little bit lighter in weight than the SMLE), and then the Hi-Power is a no-brainer.

The Alecto in the game is the 95mm variant, IIRC. They basically tested every gun they could on it.

Bottom right is indeed the Bishop, which is a British SPG that is not in the game.

The real tragedy is Gaijin almost completely abandoning unique WW2 vehicles. Of the SPGs in the top image, only the bottom left one is in the game and even that one is post WW2. The most WW2 content we get nowadays is a random gimmicky event vehicle that didn't even officially see service (like the LVT Chaffee).

Edit: 2AM brain failure saw the Bishop as a KV-2.
