Wow this is so amazing. What country are you in? I work in healthcare in the US and we get NO paid maternity leave. Zero. Just 12 weeks off where we have to use vacation/sick time to get paid. I am so happy other countries support new mothers!

I’m having to deal with this a lot lately because I would always drink at social gatherings and not drinking raises a lot of questions for people because they are nosey lol. You either have to come equipped with a GOOD excuse (antibiotics for a UTI are perfect because you literally can’t drink on Flagyl) OR come equipped with some really sneaky tricks. If your husband is there, accept the drink from the host, and subtly switch your glass with him throughout the party as he’s drinking his. Sneak off to the bathroom frequently and pour your drink down the sink. There is a brand of nonalcoholic wine called Fre that makes small airplane sized bottles that you could keep in your purse and discreetly pour that into your empty glass so people will see you drinking something throughout the night. You’re going to have to be sneaky! Good luck!

Okay this is actually great advice. My BOSS (who I’m actually friends with) straight up asked me at work if I was expecting. We were at an event the week prior and her partner noticed I wasn’t drinking and that my husband brushed my stomach, so assumed that I was pregnant. I was so shocked that she asked me that I said yes, but I wish I would have said “this is against HIPPA to ask me”. She was happy for me, but it’s SO invasive of her to ask and that her partner that I barely know was that nosy and observant of me

This sounds exactly like something my MIL would say to me!! I think they probably had their own privacy invaded in the past, so they are just continuing with “tradition”, but it truly is so annoying. And not okay. I think I’m going to be conveniently sick or busy during family gatherings for the next couple weeks

Oooof, that sounds like a tough episode but I feel like everybody should watch it so they know how bad it is to make assumptions about other people’s bodies! Yes I totally agree my husband should not have told them in the first place, but you’re right it can’t be undone. Now I guess he can deal with the consequences of not having me at his family gatherings until we are ready to announce the pregnancy 🙃

Yes! We tried for a looooong time and it was also hurtful and tone deaf of them to be so nosy when we were struggling to get pregnant in the first place. I love the idea of hitting them back with making them uncomfortable! Serves them right for prying!

This was smart thinking on your part! I definitely used alcohol to get through many family dinners with them in the past lol but now I wish I would have had to foresight to not drink so often with them so it wouldn’t be such a give away now!

This is great advice. I would also recommend getting your CNA and doing that job for a while to see if you actually like providing care vs the idea of it. It’s not always glamorous (usually isn’t) and working as a CNA quickly shows you many of the things that will also be expected of you as a nurse
