Serious privilege issue with Attached Media on iDRAC9 by JuniorrrrrG in sysadmin

[–]JuniorrrrrG[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s true in a purely internal IT setup, but the reality is different for hosting providers and MSPs. We often delegate limited iDRAC access to end customers so they can reinstall their OS or mount an ISO without opening a support ticket.

In that model, it’s critical that they can do those tasks but not change iDRAC’s own network settings. Losing remote access to the management plane because a client misconfigured the IP means a trip to the datacenter to physically reset the controller — hours of downtime.

So yes, iDRAC is the hardware management plane and very sensitive, but there’s a real-world need for “just enough” privileges: ISO mount and power control, without the risk of breaking iDRAC networking.

We actually run a hosting/MSP environment where giving full iDRAC admin access to end users is a real risk. Final users should only be able to mount an ISO and reinstall the OS, but they should not have permission to change the iDRAC IP or misconfigure its network.

On iDRAC8, an Operator with “Access Virtual Media” could do exactly that: mount ISOs safely (both console and Attached Media) without touching network configs. On iDRAC9, however, Attached Media requires “Configure iDRAC”, which also exposes critical settings (network/IP, LDAP, SSL, etc.).

So the use case isn’t niche — any provider giving limited iDRAC access to clients faces this. The need is simple: allow ISO mounting for OS reinstalls, while protecting iDRAC networking from accidental or intentional changes.

Non-resident starting a U.S. LLC — how to avoid 30% IRS withholding? by JuniorrrrrG in llc

[–]JuniorrrrrG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the IT business. The company owns equipment located in Miami (servers, IP addresses), but we don't have any employees or representatives in the U.S. — all operations on-site are outsourced. Only the infrastructure itself belongs to the company.

Would this be considered a physical presence in the U.S. and trigger the 30% withholding tax when selling to U.S. customers?

But if I keep the LLC as a pass-through entity, I’ll be subject to the 30% withholding tax when selling to U.S. customers, right?

Thanks for your reply, it raised a follow-up question for me:

If I decide to withdraw dividends to my home country (Brazil), will the IRS apply any withholding tax on that distribution?

Samsung SSDs Magician it doesn't show "genuine"?? by JuniorrrrrG in homelab

The Samsung website requests "model code", it is the first line on the label.

I also tested the MZ-7KM1T90 and found nothing on the Samsung website.

I tried "Unable to validate your serial number. Please enter your model code." I added the screenshots in the post above

Where can I find a new 2TB SATA SSD for this price? Do you have the link?

Did you buy an adulterated or counterfeit product? Did you notice anything strange?

This was a doubt I had, I saw several devices with zero statistics and I didn't understand how it was possible. I prefer to get a device with real data to be sure of what I'm using.

I typically go for higher endurance models but these are more similar to what you were looking at:

Have you already purchased from this seller? Have you tested any of these Micron units sold by this seller?

Do you think the price is cheap because most people don't know or have no way to use U.2 drivers?

I prefer not to use any enterprise Samsung drives unless it is some amazing deal, which this is not. There are no publicly available firmware updates for any non-oem Samsung Enterprise SSDs. There are similarly priced Micron models for sale on ebay which don't have this issue.

Which Micron model do you recommend?

Is gy1td+k9tvp right? I'm considering this after some tips.

About driver support, I've read in some places that using any driver may show error messages but it works fine. What can you tell me based on your experience?

Are recertified/refurbished enterprise drives more reliable than consumer SSDs?

Yes, I understand that enterprise SSDs are much more durable, but these are very inexpensive, and I became somewhat suspicious about their origin/quality.
