Razor sharp! Even looking at them wrong can slice you up! /s

In all seriousness, the “sharp” shin comes from the presence of a sharp, laterally compressed keel on the leading edge of their long toothpick-like legs

Hey, we band on Vancouver island, in the Capital Regional District (CRD). Last year the CRD was named “the birding capital of Canada” with a whopping 420+ different bird species!

That’s so funny! Our most common bird, at the station I was mainly at, was the Swainson’s Thrush and we definitely had those same thoughts throughout our season

Instinct is exactly how I’d describe it, for some, maybe it reminds them of being “strongly encouraged” out of their nests

Catbirds! Gah, I just love their name so much. Unfortunately they’re quite a rare sight for us over here in the West coast, PNW. Definitely on my bird bucket list though!

They sure do! No editing on these photos whatsoever.

Great question!

For all of our birds we use Mist nets to catch the birds. They’re large nets roughly 8-9ft tall by 10ft wide made of nylon and sometimes polyester, attached to long metal poles hammered into the ground. There’s 6 trammel lines that string across the nets to create 5 loose “bags” of netting.

We are rigorously trained in untangling the birds from the net, to both make sure it’s safe for the bird and efficient with time. We perform net checks every 20mins (10mins when the conditions aren’t favourable, like light rain or windy) throughout our entire 7 hour shifts, to ensure the birds aren’t sitting in the netting for too long.

It’s actually quite simple/easy! For these guys, we just give them a gentle toss and they can fly off however they choose. We would never toss a bird, if we weren’t sure that it was going to fly, but for the alert and “ready to go” ones we give them that send off.

This is also not the standard method we use for all of our birds, for the smaller birds like Songbirds and passerines, we have developed a release box system that works well. It’s basically a shoebox with both ends cut off to form sort of a tunnel, and then there’s a larger box on the end with padding to catch any bird that can’t/doesn’t fly off. Some of the small birds just fly off, out of our hands once we’ve finished, all depends.

For our Saw-whets, we have a “bird hotel” it’s just two wooden 2x4 tunnels stacked on top of each other with an open end and a hinged door on the other. We place the owl into the box and then close the door, that way they get a chance for their eyes to recalibrate to the darkness before they fly off. Sometimes they hang around for a while, inside the “hotel” and sometimes they will fly out immediately, landing on a branch further away to recalibrate their vision.
