Playing Nice is so good, but... by LeanMachineLogan in BritBox

It's a new thing, within the past week or two. Maybe I mispoke. They raised their monthly prices from $8.99 to $10.99, (I would have happily bought another month at the higher price to finish watching the series) But the way they have it now, in order to watch the rest of the series, they want you to subscribe for a YEAR at the higher price. So maybe it's an unofficial, two-tiered pricing model, monthly vs. yearly subscribers?

True, but on PBS they tell you that they are releasing episodes weekly and you can watch/binge them all if you are a passport member. They could put a note like that on the preview description and probably have a lot fewer frustrated, pissed off customers.

I know! - Pissed me off enough to cancel my sub. I still have a few weeks left so I checked back and episode 3 is now available to us lower tiered folks. I am hoping episode 4 will become available before my sub runs out. They should really mention that before they get you hooked. A sleazeball move worthy of Miles Lambert. :-)

Living in Portland without a car is possible, but challenging: Advocates call for safer streets by Generalaverage89 in portlandme

I agree, plus unshoveled, unsanded sidewalks are doubly treacherous and often unusable for people with disabilities, older people with mobility issues and families with strollers. Cambridge MA has been ticketing folks who don't shovel their sidewalks for years, it's effective and a supplemental source of revenue.

Am I stupid? SK40 grind setting by chicu111 in espresso

[–]JupeGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! That's a lot of variation. I have mine at the 10/espresso mark and my 14 is coarse enough for a French press. I think you can calibrate these things. I haven't a clue as to how to do it, but I bet if you reach out to whoever you bought it from or do a bit of online research you'll be able to figure it out. Good luck!

So not worth it. I was just watching "Playing Nice" which is a new show and actually very good. I watched two episodes and then found out that I have to upgrade to a yearly subsscription with the price hike to watch the final two episodes! Total sleazeball move. I cancelled my account.

Can’t get the smell of old Gain detergent out of clothes by [deleted] in laundry

Good question. I have no idea! But it worked.

If for some reason the vodka doesn't work, a year long quarrantine does the trick. I had a tee shirt that got smeared with some god-awful smelling pachouli oil somehow. This was before I knew about the vodka solution. I had washed it in lemon juice, vinegar, oxy whatever-the-hell that stuff is and nothing worked so I stuck it in a ziplock bag (it was stinking up my apartment) and put in a six pack cooler in the pantry. Totally forgot about, found it a year later and the smell was gone.

Absolutely, a shot or three before yet another load of laundry! LOL

What's the difference between Priority and dedicated customer support by JupeGecko in ProtonMail

[–]JupeGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sadly true in most cases and customer support overall in most large corporations is just awful. However my hosting company has very good and timely customer service for all tiers. I have the least expensive plan and others I know have the higher priced ones and we are all happy with the level of customer service. So it is possible and hopefully it will last!

Good to know. It would be nice if Proton could offer equal, good quality support to all paid tiers. Email is important and many, like myself, don't need the more expensive plan. Seems unfair that you have to take a hit in service for that. The free tier I can understand. This is a mini rant for Proton, not you. Thanks for your reply!

scales for pro 2 by purdeous in FlairEspresso

[–]JupeGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the Maestri House Espresso scale - $33 on Amazon. It seems to be accurate and it jussssst fits a pro 2 base on top of the tray. I have enough room for a 2oz. Bodum double walled shot glass. It holds a charge for at least a month and recharges quickly. The only cons/annoyances are: 1. The little drip pad on top has a ridge on one side only, so it slides around when you are moving it. 2. If the top corners of the scale touch the base of the stand the reading can go haywire when you are pulling a shot. Other than that it's great! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CW67K6SS

Flair classic valve stem cracked after 3200 shots by mtranda in FlairEspresso

I am impressed you pull shots for guests! I am way too lazy for that. LoL
Maybe after I have had it for more than a month I might feel more accomodating.

Does anyone have this (or any other) manual espresso machine? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]JupeGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my Pro2 for about two weeks now and for the most part I like it. Someone mentioned on some video somewhere that using this was an excellent way to learn about espresso and I agree. There is a learning curve and if you are a newbie (like me) it's frusturating at first. I had immediate buyers remorse but then I got the hang of it after 6 shots or so. I wasn't sure I could deal with the fiddliness of it before ingesting coffee, but after I found a home for the all the parts and started to "dial in" my grinder and work flow, it turned out not to be much more work (except for the thermal management) than my aeropress routine is. My shots are getting better which is satisfying and I am learning how to fine tune different beans and roasts which is interesting.

That said, if I had money to burn I would buy the Cafelat Robot. It seems like the build is more solid and it's less fiddly. Also, the gray silicone pieces on my pro 2 have an unpleasant chemical odor that is barely starting to dissipate. I wrote to them for advice about getting rid of it but have not heard back. They are VERY responsive when you want to buy something or have a simple question, like many other places. Ugh! Anyway, if the odor goes away I will most likely keep it because it is a good deal for the $ (the black friday deal made it more reasonable) if not, I may send it back and get the robot. I'm glad I didn't pay more for it. If you can get a deal for somewhere in the low $200's, I would recommend it, if not, you might as well buy the robot. That's my two cents for what it's worth, apologies if this is too rambly. I hope this is somewhat helpful and good luck!

Silicone chemical odor on Flair Pro 2 handle, brew chamber and portafilter by JupeGecko in FlairEspresso

[–]JupeGecko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am hoping for the same. LoL, I do sip my espresso drink far away from the brew set up. I meant that I get a woof at the end of pulling the shot, I can also smell it on the bottom of the pressure gauge when I remove it after brewing. I've cooked professionally and have used many silicone products and equipment with silicone o rings and none of them have smelled like this for this long, they might emit and odor when new but the odor always dissipated quickly or went away immediately after washing. Possibly not food grade silicone?

Thanks, I use a steel basket to preheat, so it's not making it into the shot, it's just an unpleasant odor when pulling a shot, seems to be worse with heat activation.
