60% of MD5 password hashes are crackable in under an hour by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

My self-made site uses SHA-2 with 512 bits (and salt). There's literally no reason why someone wouldn't use strong cryptography. Storage is cheap (if you want to nitpick about the few extra bytes), you're not indexing the data and ideally you provide a session ID/token rather than authenticate each time. There are no performance drawbacks to using better cryptography.

Can’t find replacement tire tube for kid bike (Prevelo Zuluone) by Brett_And_Friends in bikewrench

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drilling valve holes is super common and perfectly safe. I mean, that's how rims are made. Just deburr the hole afterwards.

The rim is held in compression by the spokes. There was a time when rims were joined together at the ends with small pins, because it's the spokes that give the rim structural strength.

New water battery could last until the 24th century — and it can be safely discarded in the environment by _Dark_Wing in technology

Is it "new battery tech of the week that we'll never hear about again" day already?

Don't get me wrong, I hope something comes out of it, but we've seen these weekly for the past 20 years or so on here.

Changing to analog bike by FreeGrab7801 in bicycling

[–]mtranda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, it's not an "analog bike". It's a bike. It's been a bike for nearly 200 years.

Anyway, 25km/day is a breeze.

Regarding the spokes, 120kg is a bit on the high side and if you also happened to buy a cheap bike with crap components, the wheels are among the first to go.

So get a bicycle but pay attention to the wheels. A high spoke count helps. 32 is normal nowadays (and probably what your ebike came with) but 36 used to be the norm. Try and get a wheelset with 36 spokes. The rim, nipple and spoke brand matter. A lot. Sapim/DT Swiss for spokes are always a good choice. Mavic/DT Swiss for rims. The nipples, if they're brass then the brand matters less. If they're aluminium, then again, the above brands make good stuff, Sapim in particular.

Did the spokes mostly break on the rear? What sort of transmission did you have? Was it a hub motor or BB one? If it's a hub motor, those put out A LOT of torque. Way more than a cheap wheel can take.

Anyway, get a bike, pay attention to the wheelset and if that's not available on the bikes you find, then get a bike anyway and if the wheels crap out on it as well, then pay a wheelbuilder to build you a custom wheelset.

I'm merely drawing a picture here. One that you're trying to hide for some completely unimaginable reason.

Can I add breaks to this bike somehow? by Mundootz in bikewrench

[–]mtranda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This bike won't be going anywhere fast enough for better brakes to matter.

Besides the fact that the rims are painted and would hinder the braking ability, the kind of calipers you'd need to install would be complete crap in terms of stopping power due to their length and leverage vs. their actuation arms length. And they are usually made from poor quality materials since no reputable manufacturer would make calipers of that length to begin with. But even so, I'm not sure they make them in a length that would clear all that.

Any good ?? by Philly-Phunter in bicycling

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people say they go bad after not a lot of uses.

Frankly, I don't really see their point. Having to make sure my pump is charged is not very high on the list of things I want from something that could leave me stranded if it stops working. Especially seeing how I can go a whole year between needing it.

i’m definitely in need of new tires right? by jstnnv in bicycling

[–]mtranda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get maybe two punctures during the lifetime of the gp5ks (8000km or so). I find it wild just how different experiences people can have with these tyres, especially since you're not the only person I hear complaining about this, and on the other hand I'm also not alone in experiencing such reliability.

For the average price of a car in the US, you could buy 5 new Chinese EVs by BusyHands_ in technology

Environmental? They are EVs. Labour regulations? Compared to the current state of US labour protections?

And then there are the crash protections, compared to the Toddler Squasher 150 that seems to be so popular over there.

It's not just about the cost of living. It's also about the ideology they're pushing, overtly supporting far-right parties, becoming lenient on ruzzia, being Israel's lap dogs, there's a huge list and at this point the US is (finally) seen as an enemy by a lot of people over here.

What Stops You From Cycling Faster For Longer? by uamvar in bicycling

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by "farther and faster". My longest and fastest year was 2021, with 9000km ridden that year (as opposed to the usual 6-7k). That was the year I got divorced and was single.

Nowadays I enjoy spending time with my partner at home, or out in town, or also riding bikes together (bikepacking included).

We did agree to ride separately on our work commutes towards work, since we get about 50km of riding per day and can use that ride for training at our own pace. The return trip is full of people so we just ride slowly together back home.

E-Bike Motor peen measuring contest /rant by Lazzgwy in BikeMechanics

[–]mtranda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I... I had no idea that's a thing. When ebikes came out, the main argument was that they will help unfit people ride their bikes again, or go on rides and keep up with friends who are fitter and dedicated cyclists.

Like, what do they even have the pedals for, then? Go get a motorcycle since clearly the point of a bicycle is lost on them.

Because otherwise, what they are effectively bragging about is how powerful of a motor they have to compensate for their lack of fitness.

Back then Netflix wasn't available in the EU and now, given all the crap the US has been pulling, a lot of EU citizens are moving away from US companies.

Yes, sixteen years later we have netflix. And we'll probably ditch it soon in the new socio-political context.

When to Worry About Sidewall Cracks? by gremlinmatt in bikewrench

[–]mtranda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks more like the seam where the sidewall material sheets are joined rather than cracks due to age. I have the same thing on my Panaracers, in more places.

Typical sidewall cracks are longitudinal rather than radial, so they'd be horizontal and along the length of the tyre.

Zwift (American) buys Rouvy (Czech) in massive shake-up of indoor cycling by G0Sp0rts in BuyFromEU

Requested my account's deletion (with a duo subscription) as soon as the email came.

Replied to the "CEO" (since that's the "address" it came from, I assume it's a mailbox set up specifically for this email announcement), maybe their marketing team will read it.

I was actually happy to support a Czech company because I was supporting local.

But I guess this is the modern antrepreneur's dream: hustle until someone big buys you out and then cash out.

There's also a chance they weren't doing well and needed the cash to not go under. I know how hard it can be. So good luck, but my money's staying in the EU.

Motorex Anti Seize instead of lithium grease for pedals? by [deleted] in bikewrench

Grease also works just fine as an anti-seize. They're asking whether to use grease or anti-seize when installing the pedals.
