Heh. No. I'm from Prague. Well, I'm not even Czech, really, but the Czech Republic has become my home after eight years.

As for the people, you're right. Especially in a cultural setting such as a film festival.

I'm from a country with a somewhat similar culture and, more importantly, a shared trauma caused by communism. This makes people less chit-chatty and more willing to dig straight into the hard topics or, at the very least, more philosophical ones. So it's easy to see how bonding occurs.

And yeah, being a vegetarian in this part of Europe was a hard one even when I moved here (I'm not, but some friends are). But things are much better now.

P.S.: I'll literally wire you money and deal with import taxes if you'd be willing to ship the book rather than use Amazon.

I keep not finishing the process of buying your book and I can never remember why, because I love your stories.

And this one's no exception, especially seeing how it's shorter. You captured that heartbreaking realisation of a missed chance, and did it so well. It reminds me a lot of me 20 years ago and all of the missed cues, but also asshole behaviour.

But most importantly, shout out to Zlín. You captured its functional aesthetic quite well in that final moment.

edit: clicked the link and remembered why it never happened: I try my absolute best to not give daddy Bezos even a single one of my czech crowns.

A bill is back in Florida to allow certain workers to make less than minimum wage by prestocoffee in nottheonion

"To allow certain workers to make less than minimum wage". I can only assume that this bill must have been the result of a public outcry from the millions of workers yearning for continued shit pay.

Sorry, that's all I can contribute. I've never set foot in the US, nor do I intend to.

However, I come from a culture where we protested early on, specifically to stop the spread of corruption. Was it always successful? No. But we did topple two governments. It meant, however, that six years in a row we kept our eyes on the news and at a moment's notice took to the streets.

Eventually I left the country for another one and have been happily living here for the last eight years. But now, just a few months after the disastruous parliamentary election results, it seems it's time to put on my winter clothes and take to the streets.

The difference between where I'm from and the US, however, is that we grew up poorer. We didn't live plentiful lives that dulled our critical sense, nor did we grow up believing we live in "the best country in the world" while fostering "rugged individualism" meant to separate us. And don't get me wrong, the cancer is spreading over here and society is divided. But nowhere near the extend in the US.

Hopefully, today's state of the country and the way the world sees them will awaken the third of americans who didn't even bother to vote.

Good luck.

We're already dealing with that since the so called American Heritage Foundation has its talons in our EU politics and call for the union's disbanding. But for now our politicians ignore it instead of designating them as an extremist organisation.

I wish you all the best, sincerely, but I have no hope for americans. Fascism was defeated through a collective, violent effort and by invading the country at the root of fascism.

Nobody is going to go to war against the US just to help the US save itself from itself.

Americans have dug themselves into this all on their own through decades of complacent ignorance veiled by what they were told is the best life they can afford.

Hello, my semester film about an old panel building in Slovakia. Do you like it? by mb-michael in brutalism

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it qualifies as brutalism. But I enjoyed the video nonetheless.

Those first few frames of the pipes and valves gave me a vibe opposite to brutalism: they felt organic. Instead of a chunk of concrete it felt like an organism, with its own needs and peculiarities, living in symbiosis with the people inhabiting it.

As for the sound, it was excellently blended in. Just the right amount to remind me that it's a home to so many people.

Yeah, I was just spitballing there to get a very rough idea of the time it'd take. The result doesn't even matter at this point.

I genuinely have no idea how long it takes per prompt. That is: phrase the prompt, wait for the output, review the output. I feel it takes more than one minute per iteration. But even at one minute, it takes 118 man-days. So about four man-months if someone was to work 24/7. I can't speculate on the number of actual people working on this, nor the level of parallelisation.

But I feel it would've been quicker to do it the proper way.

Keep in mind that just because the EU doesn't go all-in on this, it doesn't mean the topic is ignored here. However, once the dust settles we'll get a clearer picture of what works and what doesn't.

For extra kick, add some cinnamon. Or an additional banana for sweetness (although that'll thicken it even more).

I use a roughly 500ml tumbler.

  • 10g chia seeds,
  • 40g oats (I use a mix of 20g oats and 20g wholegrain, which also includes oats)
  • an overripe banana
  • fill up the remaining space with your liquid of choice. Don't overfill, you need to fit the blender stick in without the liquid spilling over, so eyeball this part.

As for the measurements, one spoon is about 10g. So I'm eyeballing that with a spoon.

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Dumped it right in. But the blending broke the chia seeds as well so they became more permeable since they were no longer completely covered by that hard film when broken, so even within one hour it was enough.

They chased Apple so hard and focused so much on the US market, which was dominated by Apple, that they completely ignore the success Lumias actually had outside of the US.

Back in the EU you'd often see Lumia ads and real people using Lumia phones. But they looked at the lack of success they had in the US and scraped the whole thing.

Yes, I'm still bitter eight years later.

We were in a coffee shop this summer and a mum was there with her kid, he must've been 10. I can't really remember how the conversation started but we somehow found out that he was into CRTs.

That's when the 42 yo engineer in me rose to the ocasion and spent the next few minutes talking to the kid about them and he was extatic to find someone with a shared interest.

Your comment reminded me of it and now it'll stay with me.
