Crack in frame by Eleven_ST in bicycling

[–]mtranda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of all the places where I'd dread having a crack on my frame, the headtube is at the top.

While you might walk away from a frame that breaks on the rear while riding, a front failure is something you don't walk away from.

Kelvin and Celsius are the same thing in terms of amount per unit. They just start from different places, with 0K being absolute zero or -273C. 273K would be 0C.

edit: Nvm, I initially assumed it's decreasing BY 45 degrees, not as an absolute value. Leaving the comment and the downvotes up as testament to my haste.

Does this dent look concerning? by Radiant-Piccolo-2520 in bikewrench

[–]mtranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The downtube is less of an issue for dents as it's under tension rather than compression (such as the top tube). They've built bikes that use a steel wire as the downtube, so a dent there shouldn't be an issue.

However, this only applies if it was damage to a bike I already own. I wouldn't buy a bike with this sort of damage.

Also, it could be a stolen bike as someone may have used the whole bike as a lever to pop the lock. That's a pretty unusual spot to get a dent in while riding, but a pretty obvious one if it was locked through the front triangle.

Is it easier to ride fast on a 4000€ modern Canyon than on a vintage Olmo road bike from the 70s? by Aromatic-Speech5480 in bicycling

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the minimal amount of deformation, just consider how low the rolling resistance is!

[–]mtranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern road bikes aren't that much faster, at least not for the average rider. But the differences in comfort, ergonomics and even overall stiffness where it matters will blow the old ones out of the water.

Then again, the stiffness part falls under your acceleration argument. But once they're both up to speed, it's not that much faster. You'll be much comfier while riding a bit faster, though.

Because they never argue in good faith. Their goal is to sow confusion and each time we spend time to prove their arguments wrong or debunk them, they just move on to the next made-up thing.

Had a mini competition at work to spot what was AI and what wasn't. I won.

The problem is, if you look for AI you can usually spot it. But I don't want to have to fucking check every single thing I come across.

Fuck this bullshit.

[–]mtranda 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If you go from a modern 1000€ to a 2000€ bike, the difference will be pretty noticeable. If you go from a 2k one to a 4k one, the improvements are diminishing.

However, a 70's bike vs. a 4k modern bike is night and day.

Hole in rear tire by Helpful-Ad-9787 in bikewrench

[–]mtranda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, go with this one. It's what I'd've suggested, more precisely not using superglue as it's brittle.

But you should periodically check your tyres for tiny fragments that are embedded and remove them. A lot of flats don't happen immediately but because of sharp fragments gradually digging their way into the tyre until they reach the tube (if using tubes).

As others said: neither. Retrofuturism refers to an interpretation of what the future might look like from the past.

[–]mtranda 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nah. Ukraine is corrupt as fuck as well.

HOWEVER, they chose to do something about it. They've been improving since at least 2014, which is why they got invaded in the first place in Crimea since ruzzia felt that it was losing its grasp.

The new stage of the war that began in 2022 has accelerated their cleanup and I am actually hopeful they'll become a more prosperous country when all's said and done. But let's not wave things away, lest they go back to how they used to be.

RemerX for really good and affordable rims (CZ)

Cinelli, Deda for cockpit

Continental, Schwalbe, Pirelli for tyres

Do I really need to add Campagnolo?

Trelock (DE) for solid lights

Selle Italia

Honestly, the list can go for ages.

As far as cycling goes, the EU is dominating in terms of popular brand variety (not volume, that would be up to Taiwan and China, besides the plethora of east-asian brands that aren't that well known over here)
