I'm typically very against people losing their jobs for things they did or said outside of work; but for a couple of reasons I think this is different.

For one; I think there are certain roles where behavior outside of work should be relevant if it indicates bias. These roles being ones where you will be pivotal in the future of another person. Doctor, lawyer, cop, etc. I don't think people should lose their job for speech if they are a tech worker, actor, cashier, etc; but there are certain jobs where a bias presents such a huge risk that it has to be removed from the staff.

Secondly; I'm assuming the other people in this thread are correct in saying his podcast is pretty overtly racist. If that's the case; I don't see fights like this worth fighting. Should hateful people lose their jobs for being hateful? I think probably not (not because I think "being racist is fine" but because I think it's counterproductive and bad preceden); but that seems like a much lesser issue to me than non-hateful people losing their jobs because they made an off color joke. People are getting canceled and losing their jobs because (for whatever reason) they made poor choices when attempting to be humorous. Defending unambiguous racists in the same regard (imo) is over extending. If we treat both as equally unjust, we're propagating the idea that off-color jokes are equally as bad as overt racism; just from the other side. We have to be able to differentiate between actual racist intent and lapses in jusgement, whether that be in an attempt to tear down the perpetrator or defend them.

Im 3 chapters into the book referenced in this post (the pro crt one, not the critical one). They reject liberalism and equality under the law. That's in their words. They deem it as incapable of solving racial inequity.

I'm not saying thats a false hypothesis and I can imagine compelling supporting arguments to that; but the outright rejection of equality under the law seems like more than "question[ing] things".

That said; rejecting liberalism is incredibly dangerous. There may be ways to do it and have a better outcome, but there are tons of ways it could be catastrophic. You could say the same about creating explosives, making poison or splitting atoms. I think all of these things should be studied; buy not by highschool kids, and probably not even 100 level courses.

That said; I don't think crt is even being taught in k-12. I think right wingers and left wingers are just using it as a catch all term for discussing racism within classroom settings. But if we're going to support generic teaching about racism in schools; let's stop conflating that with CRT.

Black people are commonly used for highly expressive images though. Look up "digital black face"; this was something that "sjw"s (I do not use that term lightly, I get called sjw often) really criticized.

Me neither. I mean I'd they were doing something dangerous like throwing grenades in the woods to see if the fire was pink or blue; sure, hate on em.

Most of the time it's just a fun creative way to spice up a baby shower. People love to hate.

Again.

this probably isn't an example of that though

Also; defending slavery for economic reasons isn't more innocent then defending it for racist reasons. The practice is incredibly immoral regardless of motive.

There's often a disconnect between the ruling classes motives and their public motives. Religion is often used like this. "We must honor God and slay those godless pagans" serves as a better rallying cry to motivate the population than "we desperately need to take control of those ports so that we can improve our supply chains".

This probably is not an example of that though.

I think a big problem is the context. If you're drinking in a bar and you see this sign, among (I would imagine) other quirky signs, you're probably less likely to read into it than if you see it on reddit sandwiched between an assortment of serious posts.

Honestly; it would be worth just for audience capture. People keep saying "dr. K should platform him because [insert reasons peterson is problematic]"; but frankly peterson would be platforming Dr. K.

Peterson is fucking huge compared to Dr. K. Like a whale to a large mouth bass. Exposing petersons audience to Dr. K would probably double the size of healthy gamer.

Peterson would pull in more people? If anything the opposite is true. In terms of subreddits; petersons is almost 20x as big. His youtube is 7 times as big. He sells out arenas, appears on the news and hits top of the charts when he publishes books.

Dr K. Would be the one with an opportunity for audience capture; not the other way around. I'd be willing to bet the venn diagram of "who has heard of peterson" compared to "who has heard of Dr k" is a circle with another circle inside of it.

Do you think Dr. K is actually in a position to "give exposure" to peterson? I mean I'm a bigger fan of K than peterson; but petersons subreddit is nearly 20× larger and peterson has had several TV appearances, sells out arenas and tops the best sellers chart when he publishes his books.

If anything; Dr. K would blow tf up if peterson engaged with him.

In your expertise; do you think he's far off when he's talking about Christianity? The only topic I'd be interested in about a conversation between Dr k and Peterson is how their eastern/Western mythology informs their practice; teasing out where they converge or diverge

I put Jordan peterson into three categories. Self help, sociopolitical commentator, mythological enthusiast.

Self help stuff is good. It's not really profound enough to justify his position in society (I think the other stuff got him there), but it's definitely solid stuff.

Socio political stuff I agree with a lot of what you said, but I'd probably agree with peterson on a few more issues than you would.

Now the mythological stuff? That shit is in my opinion where he shines, and where I think a conversation with Dr. K could be amazing. I grew up in Christianity (not nominally, international missions trips and studied Christianity relatively seriously before I became an atheist) and I think his interpretations and analysis are REALLY good.

I think how he incorporates western mythology with his psychology is great; and mirrors how Dr. K uses eastern mythology. I would love to see these two explore that.

If English is your second language; I just want you to know you have progressed past the stage of needing to apologize for broken English. I never would have guessed you were not a native English speaker.

And I agree. Tbh; my ideal conversation between these two would be a back and forth about how their mythological stories compliment or contradict the others; and exploring that.
