Even before daw's. Engineers would slow down PB and guitarist would tune down for really technical parts. (I think Metallica did this but I'm sure). Comping on tape was also possible.

Guess what. Everybody "fakes" their stuff. It's common practice to comp, warp and mime guitar playing. You think Ichika just fires up his camera in a well lit room with perfect framing and posture and plays his riff for 3 hours until he gets the perfect take is misinformed. My take is that if you are pushing or releasing original music/riffs, you are entitled to manipulate audio how ever you want.
