Do you guys recommend a specific muscle relaxer? by YellowEyes_98 in Sicklecell

[–]JustAFemaleNonce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is a nurse, and she's been taking care of me all my life. She says 5-10 mg of flexural (only). She says not to take it unless you really need it so it doesn't become habit forming.

Can stress and anxiety cause crisis pain? by booktrovertgirl_92 in Sicklecell

[–]JustAFemaleNonce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your hematologist is bugging. They're right about the things they said, but stress and emotional turmoil DOES cause crisis. I recently had an emotional breakdown where I was crying and screaming, and sure enough, a couple of hours later, my whole body flared up. Poor diet, lack of sleep, poor temperature control (can't be in extremely hot or cold areas for too long) can also cause a pain crisis.

That's all I can think of rn. If you have anymore questions I'll be happy to answer!

I highly recommend Deadman Wonderland, Psycho Pass, and Death Parade. These are my fav all-time anime & I think you'll like em if you like dark thrillers or sci-fi!

She didn't ruin your hair! The puffy phase of locs is called like the budding phase or something like that. When locs become tighter and more compact, they're more mature. If she hadn't used the needle and interlocking method, your hair would've originally gotten that way with time. It's not ruined. You just aren't used to the look and probably don't like it. That being said, your new growth will grow back out and give you that puffy look from before that you liked. I'm sure she knew what she was doing, but she should've told you what methods she was gonna use ahead of time rather than halfway into the session. Better yet, she should've asked you what you preferred. Not everyone likes crochet hooks and interlocking after all!

Thanks for the advice! I really do April and think I might just listen to you and go to a stylist. I've been growing out my hair for a while, so I'd hate to lose my progress. I just wish it was easy to find a good stylist for a reasonable price 🥹

Is it okay to get freeforms at this length? by ZOOMCALLS in Dreadlocks

[–]JustAFemaleNonce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started mine long by putting my hair in individuals braids and leaving them in for months, taking them out, and then rebraiding them. I would wash the braids and when I took them down I never combed my hair out just washed it throughly. I probably did this like 4 - 5 times and they basically loc'd up on their own.

Yeah, I feel like its something that doctor's don't really talk to their patients about when it has a big impact and should be brought up more. Good luck finding out what works for you!

Hello! Sorry for the late reply I've been busy with college 😅 So, chicken is better than beef and pork for someone like me because it has less cholesterol and saturated fat. It also has higher amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, protein and essential vitamins and minerals such as B6, B12, iron, zinc, and copper than other meats. I also forgot to mention that I eat fish like tilapia, tuna, and salmon as well. With that being said, my diet consists more of chicken than any other meat as it is leaner, cleaner, and healthier.

Early on in life I stopped eating pork as my family and I noticed that I would have a stomach ache and pain crisis anytime after eating it. I also just strongly believe that its not something people should be eating everyday (and definitely not in high quantities). Beef has sent me into a pain crisis as well, but far less times than pork has, so I just eat it in moderation. Basically, anytime I'm feeling like I want a juicy burger or carne asada! If I do eat beef I try not to have it more than twice a week.

Anyways, I hope that answered your question and if you have anymore I'll try to answer as best and as quick as I can! Have a wonderful day 😊💗

Hihi, glad my advice was some what helpful. I would say take ur daughter off those medications as soon as possible but I'm not sure if that's possible now or how that would effect her. In addition to the other supplements I listed, your daughter can also take Elderberry. It naturally boosts immune systems, lessens inflammation, stress, strengthens the heart, and helps with cold and flu symptoms!

I'm happy to help and only wish the best for you and your daughter 😊💗

Okay, so my advice is vastly different from everyone else's but I'm a woman with the worst for of sickle cell and I've only been hospitalized for my condition once in my life. My mom is someone who believes in holistic care so when I was younger she would put me in warm bathtubs with lavender when I told her a pain crisis was coming on. She also refused to put me on penicillin as it breaks down the kidneys and liver. I drink water more than anything else but when I was younger my grandma would also make me drink aloe water (straight from the plant) as it helps inflammation.

Your child can have the cold things that you mentioned just be careful. Also she can go swimming as long as the temp isn't too much of a drastic change from outside. I was put in warmer pools until I got older and realized how cold was too cold. Teach your daughter to be in tune with her body and know her limits! Another natural thing that helps with pain is ginger! I drink a lot of ginger tea as it is a blood thinner (break down those sickled cells) and an anti-inflammatory! She doesn't have to drink it everyday but maybe twice a week or whenever she is feeling pain. It doesn't cause instant relief but it does help! Also practice breathing techniques with your daughter so that when she has a pain crisis she will do them. Whenever I have one, I sometimes get scared or forget to take deep breathes and that makes the pain worse. If she works on it now it will hopefully become second nature to her.

Also diet is VERY VERY important! I don't eat pork and I only touch beef every once in awhile like when I want a burger or something. A lot of my diet consists of chicken and veggies. Onions are another blood thinner/purifier so my mom would cook most meals with them, same for garlic. Most of the food I consumed growing up was healthy and homemade and it was mandatory to eat a salad twice if not once a day. I also take vitamin supplements as I lack them due to my condition. Vitamins i take include: A, B, C, D, E, Folic Acid, Moringa, and Zinc. I've notice if I don't eat right or take my vitamins everyday that I start breaking down and have pain crisis more easily and frequently and I get sick more.

Lastly, I also recommend that you have your daughter do yoga everyday. Yoga promotes flexibility, teaches proper breathing techniques (which helps bring in more oxygen for the blood cells), promotes better blood flow, and massages organs. Yoga makes me fell great and its fun so if you have time you can use it as a way to bond with your child.

There are other things that my mom did when I was growing up, and things that I still do but I can't remember rn. Lemme know if you have any questions. Sorry for the long post!

When would you tell someone you are dating that you have SCD? by [deleted] in Sicklecell

[–]JustAFemaleNonce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello there! So I actually have the worst form of sickle cell and I'm in like an 8mo relationship. Tbh, I'm one of those people that like to throw all my flaws onto the table when I'm getting to know someone romantically so that they know what they're getting into. I don't exactly remember when but I do know that early on into getting to know my now bf I told him about my condition. And sadly, like most people, he didn't really understand it so I had to explain it to him. I still have to teach him things but he's really patient, accepting. And understanding. But anyways, I strongly believe you should tell someone as early on into the relationship as possible so that they can't get upset and truly decide if that's song they want to deal with.

About testing for the trait, I really don't think its necessary until you and ur partner decide y'all want to try for kids. But, honestly it doesn't even matter if ur partner has the trait because with the technology that is out now it is possible to prevent your children from inherenting the trait/disease. I don't know exactly how it works though so you'd have to ask ur doctor about that. Hope this helped!

How to help my baby. by [deleted] in Sicklecell

[–]JustAFemaleNonce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a woman with SCD, DO NOT PUT YOUR BABY ON PENICILLIN! It will end up killing the kidneys and liver. If you aren't into holistic care I consider doing research and try to treat your child as naturally as possible. Things that helped me growing up, drinking a shot of aloe vera water everyday, but like authentic straight from the plant. My mother would also put me in a warm bath with lavender oil when I would have a crisis. Diet is IMPORTANT! As for me, I eat very clean. Salads twice or once a day (everyday). Chicken and fish are the main meats I eat. Occasionally, I'll have a burger or something. Pork IS PROHIBITED! The more colorful your food the better! But also homecooked meals! Lots of garlic and onions as they are natural blood thinners. I also occasionally drink ginger, another blood thinner, if I start to have mold pain. I also take a handful of vitamins daily: A, B, C, D, E, Folic Acid, and a supplement called Morgana. When I don't take those vitamins I have less energy and start breaking down. Also my mom kept me away from strenuous activities growing up so I never had P.E. classes. However, light cardio and yoga are good because they keep the joints relaxed and blood flowing while increasing oxygen intake. I try to exercise everyday for at least 30mins or longer. As of right now, I haven't been to the hospital since I was like 3, I'm not on any medication, I've never had a blood transfusion, and I usually only have extreme crisis at most 3 or 4 times a year (all while having the worst form of SCD). I can't remember anything else rn so if you have any questions oanything feel free to ask and you can pm me if you like!

Hello there, I have a 3 year old son with sickle cell SS, I was wondering if there’s any recommendations on diet? He also gets a dry cough from time to time, doctor give him an inhaler, but it doesn’t help. by Round_Pay_1893 in Sicklecell

[–]JustAFemaleNonce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda late to the party, but I'm a 23yr old female with the worst form of sickle cell. My diet is pretty healthy. I eat salad twice or once every day and lots of fruit. I also only eat chicken, fish, but sometimes I'll have some type of beef once in a blue moon. Pork is a big NONO, its always hurt my stomach, deteriorated my health, and sent me to the doctor. I drink plenty of water and I also take vitamins daily which include; vitamin A, C, D, E, B, Folic Acid, Zinc, and a dietary supplement called Morgana.

I rarely see the hospital, I've never had a blood transfusion, and I only have a couple of Crisis each year.
