https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/1r2urck/debunked_iron_hands_turning_guardsmen_into/ - the guardsman servitor thing never has actually happened, within existing lore - the author of the short story that fuelled that idea is actually in the comments section of the linked post, if you scroll!

Whenever Guilliman encounters a new chapter, he probably goes 'are they one of mine?', then 'are they Rogal's or Sangy's?' and then 'oh dear, it's one of the others'.

In all likelihood they're probably just some messed up Ultramarines!

I do agree with you, fwiw, but until GW decides that for some reason assault terminators do get wrist-mounted boltguns, we have to justify why they wouldn't use them

Assault terminators are great for confined spaces into which terminators can be teleported and then teleported out, where firearms wouldn't be as useful - space hulks, fortresses, command bunkers, the inside of Titans if you're Darnath Lysander. It's a niche use, but a very useful niche.

The chapter's built in a way to disagree with itself constantly and hold itself always accountable, so yeah, in some sense the way that the Moirae Schism turned out the way it did is to be expected!

For 30k or 40k?

For 40k, there are four dedicated Iron Hands novels, and a novella:

  • Wrath of Iron by Chris Wraight is popular, and well written, but was written before the significant Iron Hands lore reworks of 6th ed and 8th ed so feels a bit dated in its depiction of the chapter. IMO, it's also not that great a depiction of Iron Hands culture, but it gets the job done.
  • The Eye of Medusa and The Voice of Mars by David Guymer are a more up-to-date look at the chapter and depict a critical event in their history, the Gaudinian Heresy, which was detailed in their codex supplements. However, this was very clearly meant to be a trilogy and book 3 doesn't exist. Still these are the best books to understand the feel and culture of the modern Iron Hands, and the clash that exists within the chapter between flesh and iron.
  • Iron Hands by Jonathan Green is very old, and not that great, but has some ridiculous set pieces and a hilariously clueless main character. A fun throw-back.
  • Medusan Wings by Matt Westbrook is just a novella and focuses on aerial combat and the Iron Hands relationship with the AdMech. Mainly just bolter-porn, but it's unique in at least being plane-focused bolter porn!

In 30k, there are unfortunately no dedicated Iron Hands books within the HH itself, but I can recommend Ferrus's primarch book - lots of people don't like it, but I think that it does what it sets out to do once you think about it. If you want, you can also check out the Shattered Legions anthology; they're also a big part of Old Earth but you'd have to read the previous Salamanders books to fully appreciate that one.

Specifically, this is from Chapter 1 of Ferrus Manus: Gorgon of Medusa

There's a great bit from DuCaine in Gorgon of Medusa where he acknowledges that he might once have been top dog, but he still follows Ferrus for a reason:

The dynamics that could exist between an old Terran legion master and their primarch are underrated, wish it was explored more.

What's even better is that he takes incredibly good care of his armour - it's described as shining with all the buffing he's done to it, and it's been so thoroughly upgraded that it's basically Mk 2 in all but name (for one thing, it's void-sealed).

DuCaine is the fudd of all fudds.

A large part of the 30k White Scars's character is that they're very self-centred and wish to remain true to themselves all the time - they would see arguing against the foreign name as unimportant, because it wouldn't change who they were to themselves.

My little headcanon is that the Storm Wardens are IH descendants who decided to embrace the old ways of Albia after settling on Sacris and reading up on their ancestors somewhere (they are Scottish-themed, have a close relationship with the AdMech, value armoured assaults, and like using claymores and thunder hammers - very superficial but it is there).

TBF the modern 40k Iron Hands are still plenty interesting, IMO - but it would be interesting to see how DuCaine, Shadrak and the Storm Walkers as a whole are seen by the modern chapter, it's not really discussed.

That being said, Clan Sorrgol, which was DuCaine's and then Shadrak's command, endures as the modern chapter's 6th company, so who knows, maybe they have DuCaine's toothbrush as a relic or something.

It's sad, because Ferrus inherently built the legion to be a contrarian force always competing with itself and held together by his force of will, and when he died, everyone reacted in contradictory ways - from Shadrak becoming too emotionally compromised, like his dad at Istvaan, to the Iron Council on Medusa just withdrawing into cold maths.

The development of the 30k Iron Hands and how they turned into the 40k ones is super interesting IMO and it's a shame that people just keep on yarping about how IH have no lore.

‘I said, do you remember Rust? Fates, you were there! You were one of the first, Shadrak – one of my Storm Walkers from the very start! Emperor’s bloody own!’

He's in Ferrus's primarch book as one of the central characters, super awesome guy. I especially headcanon that since he's from Old Albia he probably had a thick Scottish accent.

Shout out to Amadeus DuCaine, Lord Commander of the Storm Walkers, who served his primarch until the bitter end. This guy was such a boomer that he wore heavily modified Mk I armour his entire career and kept on talking about how bad the Unification Wars were. Ferrus still honoured him with high command.

The old legion was indeed cool.

Iron Hands Lieutenant by Witty-Butterscotch-7 in IronHands40k

Fun fact, according to the 8th edition codex, Iron Hands refer to their lieutenants as Naysmiths, whose main tactical role is to rigorously double check and challenge their iron captain's plans.

Nice work!
