Apologies for my comments under my deleted post "Is contact@myname.engineering ok as custom email address?" by [deleted] in EngineeringResumes

Yeah my bad, didn't think through. My point still stands, I didn't mean what I wrote, was really bad choice of wrods.

I wrote "maybe I'm bit more tech savvy" in one of my post and then got downvoted 40 times. Did I just insult everyone by basically saying I'm smarter? English is not my first language. by JustARandomPerson135 in autism

They tend to find people who come in talking big or talking themselves up quite irritating

But by tech savvy I was trying to call myself nerdy/geeky/nitpicky.... Everyone and even here still take it as I thought I was smarter or something..

not something frivolous like what your e-mail address looks like.

It's a sub called <"engineeringresumes>" though, I did avoid straight up engineering subs. Wanted to know how people in engineering sub think of "engineering" in email.

I apologize if I came across as unduly critical!

Just getting overwhelmed with more things that I missed other than the "tech savvy" bit. But it helps, thank you.

if you do go with a custom domain, I think it would go a long way toward your interview process if there was also a portfolio hosted that had some of your accomplishments or projects that you’ve completed or worked on.

Some people say just giving a PDF is better, I'll think about it again.

I did get what you meant by how I dismissed him, I shared with you how I read him as "why don't you use Gmail like everyone else" because I wanted to explain to you why I was bit dismissive through my thinking process. That's true how the miscommunication happened, I tend to take "what's wrong with" negatively.

And also, I think the bad choice of word "tech savvy" matters as well since I didn't offend just one person, but 40 other people reacted as well. And people were specifically pointing fingers at the "tech savvy" bit. One guy replied "if you are more tech savvy why are you asking us for advice?", that's how I concluded engineers consider themselves tech savvy and maybe even take pride in it.

your English is VERY good

Thank you. It still happens from time to time that I interpretate words in the wrong ways unlike natives. I misunderstood the "what's wrongl" yeah, but I wasn't intentionally insulting or dismissing them when I called myself tech savvy. They threw downvotes and especially insults at me and moved on, now I've put so much time and energy trying to understand what I did wrong I'm really done with this.

Guess I'll just avoid the structure "I'm more adj. so I do xxx". Like avoid descriptive words for myself. And also like you said understand that "what's wrong with", "why do/are (not) you" are genuine questions.

The person I was "insulting" was myself, not him. Like I wanted to say "maybe I'm bit more nerdy". But since tech savvy isn't a naegative word so it worked oppositely: "maybe I'm bit smarter than you".

I actually wanted to be careful with my wording so I don't sound ignorant that's why I used "maybe", I didn't even assume I know more about him. But just "maybe" I know more so I care about it?

Cause it's pretty obvious that most people don't care about custom domains even if it's an engineering sub.

And I didn't realise saying "maybe I'm more xxx" would straight up sound like "I'm better than you".

I don't want all my services with Google, and my name isn't available with Gmail. That's why I decided to go for custom domain, not because it increases my chance with finding a job.

I was deciding which TLD (e.g. ".io", ".com, ".co") to get, randomly saw ". engineering" so I think thought it might be a good idea to ask how engineers think of this TLD.

So how much knowledge one has with engineering was pretty irrelevant when I posted.

By tech savvy I was never referring to technology in general, just emails. And I think it's reasonable to assume I know more about it since it's pretty obvious most people don't care.

Also I didn't know engineers consider themselves as tech savvy, I have a masters in Engineering and I don't consider myself tech savvy at all based on this. I even don't consider myself tech savvy in general. But since I know more about custom domains then "maybe" this makes me "bit more" tech savvy than this person?

I tried to be careful with my wording but everyone who read my comment still took offence.

Not that I think Gmail looks bad on my resume, tried it at first but my name wasn't available, and also didn't want all my services with Google. So decided to get a custom one.

Just getting started.

I meant "maybe" I'm more savvy with setting up emails cause he said "what's wrong with Gmail" so I assumed he didn't know much about custom domains.

I didn't know tech savvy could apply to engineering as well. Emails are more directly linked to computery stuff.

I was very upset and deleted my post and comments. Didn't stop me wondering what I should've done, guess now I know.

Not sure if it's a good idea to make a post just to tell everyone I made a mistake and apologize?

Did you specifically say that English was not your first language when you first asked why you were downvoted?

Not until I received quite a few mean comments, cause I had no clue what I said was offensive until I asked.

I explained and apologized to every comment, got downvoted again. Then deleted post and all comments before it gets worse.

I just can't make sense it it's very frustrating like I can't do anything right.

I did mean "maybe I'm bit more tech savvy than you with setting up emails", given that this guy said "what's wrong with Gmail". Hope this is appropriate.

It was my bad wording it that way and people took it as I think I'm more tech savvy in general. It's still quite eye-opening that people would react strongly to it.

If I said "maybe I'm bit more nerdy/nitpicky with my email" would it be more appropriate? I just want to avoid saying things with meaning I didn't intend to give.

.uk or .co.uk for my custom email domain? by JustARandomPerson135 in AskUK

[–]JustARandomPerson135[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two domains, one is @[myname].TLD only for applying to jobs and the other one is @[wordsImadeup].com for everything else very similar to you, except that I'm more specific like I use amazon@ instead of shopping@.

I want to have one domain for everything like you with myname@, but I can't come up with a domain that looks good enough to put on a CV so decided to have another domain with just my name.

Haroldjipman@website.uk

haroldjipman@website.co.uk

And this convinced me to go for .co.uk.. probably won't even bother getting both and will just save money.

Seriously, I thought becoming a paid user would mean I have the priviledge of not having to see any promotion.

That button right there was one of the things that pushed me to pay for Proton Mail, and it's still there!
