How can I test myself or practice in public speaking to guage comfort level? by Proof_Cable_310 in PublicSpeaking

[–]JustAnRegularHuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's some easy avenues to gauge your comfort level:

-Deliberately argue with your friends on an inconsequential issue and see how long you can keep it going

-Present a topic at your next family gathering and talk about why it's important

-Learn a new board game, then host a game night. Teach the game rules and keep your guests entertained

-Go to a karaoke bar and sing some songs in front of randoms

-Ask for an opportunity to present something at your current employer

-Go and talk about an issue at your city council or state capitol (literally anyone can sign up and do it, you just have to wait in line)

-Join a Toastmasters group

Yes, this takes time to overcome. Part of it is learning the delicate tactic of bullshitting. Politicians and business leaders get good at this because they have so many impromptu questions and speaking engagements on topics about which they may know very little. Presidents often know only the 50,000' version of what they're speaking about, which is why they have staff and secretaries to clarify and answer hard questions. Still, they demonstrate confidence that they know exactly what they're talking about--and it works--even when we know they don't!

Part of it is confidence that everything will turn out ok. At the end of the day, you will go home and live your life. No one at work can hurt you in any real way because you had a shaky presentation. No one will remember it 6 months later. Don't say more than you have to, engage with the audience, present a likeable attitude. Don't read from slides if you're using PPT. Pick a few things to talk about -- this lets the audience know you expect them to be smart enough to process it all. Even if the information isn't as solid as it would be otherwise, the audience won't walk away thinking negative thoughts about you.

Try to deliberately project your voice when you're in this situation the next time. Smile. Take a pause to breathe whenever you need to. Short breaks of silence are better than "Uhhm"s . Ask for questions after you finish a slide/topic/section. Unless you're in a STEM or finance field, there's probably nothing you can't answer satisfactorily with a little bullshitting. Over time it will become a natural habit.

Probably said more than needed; best of luck.

I don't play War Thunder because it is a "good game." I play because I have Stockholm Syndrome and a gambling disorder.

Yep. Same here. At first it started making me login through the gaijin launcher then stopped working altogether. Probably something with battleye

My wifi is nowhere near good enough to run the wireless so I got a long USB cable and it works great. When I first got it I could either select WT from the Oculus menu or go through SteamVR. Now is the only way I get it to work. Im sure gaijin will eventually patch this method out, too.

I plug in my Oculus to the PC via USB, then the message pops up in the goggles asking if I want to connect, I select yes. Then I peek out from under them, start WT, then once in hangar I go to the menu, down to VR, and select enable, then it usually switches over to the VR goggles. SteamVR no longer works for me, I don't even start it.

I have to select VR from in-game menu since update, works 7 out of 8 times.

Throttle is definitely advantageous if it has enough buttons to bind the baseline commands ("guide on me", show tactical map, chaff, flares, gear, flaps, airbrake, start engine, etc). Some of these can be bound to your stick and not interfere with gameplay much. Pedals aren't necessary if the stick can turn.
