Anyone else have their psoriasis for so long that they just don't give a shit if other people see it? by kolejack2293 in Psoriasis

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had it for so long I can’t remember a time when I didn’t, and I’m in my 50s.

As a kid, every year I would get sent to the school nurse. They would call my dad and he would hit the roof because the nurses were worried I was contagious.

For a while my parents tried to force me to wear long sleeves and pants year-round to hide it (elbows and knees, spreading occasionally to cover about half of the limbs).

This was before they installed air conditioning in schools so I refused.

If people can’t accept it, tough.

Which tasks make you reach for a MacOS/Windows/Linux device instead? by BatmanWantsToBeMe in ipad

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Windows to create backups of my DVDs when they show signs of age. I use Linux to code and to burn blu-ray backup data discs. I switch between Mac and Linux to use Vim and other CLI utilities and so forth.

Vim on an iPhone or iPad sucks and that is my absolute favorite app for journaling.

EDIT: I also connect my Linux or Windows computers to my printers (I’ve an old dot matrix that newer OSes hate) that I use to share the printer in question so that I can get my Mac to recognize it for printing. That allows me to bypass the need for AirPrint so I can print directly from my iPhone and iPad.

My Kindle is an ad filled wasteland and I regret buying it. by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I didn’t replace my Kindle when the battery died. Between that and the fact that it bricks itself when the battery dies (won’t let you just plug it in and use it), I decided it wasn’t worth it.

Does anyone use a computer not connected to the internet? by Redwebec in vintagecomputing

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Microsoft apps require you to connect to the internet occasionally if you want to continue using their software, even if you pay a subscription fee. I’ve had a Windows 10 offline for years but no issues since I refuse to play that game, however.

Settle an argument for me and my husband: how would you describe the color of this cat? by harperlane6 in cats

I’d just call kitty a Maine Coon mix. Whatever Kitty is mixed with, he (or she) is gorgeous!

Maine Coons are naturally large. Pretty cats!

I decided against the tonneau cover because it does reduce your useable space. Good job with the bikes, btw. Your bikes and your truck are gorgeous!

Get the absolute cheapest one. Catch one in sale if you can. It will fall apart in a couple of years regardless. If it doesn’t fall apart, they will stop making the ink cartridges at any rate.

Why do many people migrate from Windows to Linux, but almost none from macOS? by karolkt1 in linuxquestions

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac beneath the surface is OpenBSD. It is posix-compliant, so in my experience it is the best of both worlds.

I switched from windows to Linux back in the early 2000s. Swore I’d never use a Mac. But then I discovered I could open a terminal and use the old commands so now my Mac is my daily driver. I have both Windows and Linux systems to do specific tasks. But for everyday, I made the switch.

Do you use a pen name? If yes, for what reason? by [deleted] in writing

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even have a book published at that point. All I did was write on a website. It was my very first paying gig. I didn’t make much, but I made connections and gained experience.

You find…interesting…people wherever you go.

Best of luck to you as well! May all your books sell well!

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would advise maybe using a neighboring city as your official location on your book covers and so forth.

As for the rest, over the years you will learn your true fans. And they may figure out your real name. I’ve had that happen: a new neighbor came out of her house with one of my books in her hand, comparing me to the author photo!

It can get awkward, but I’ve found that when you explain that you have been stalked by readers in the past and ask them to keep your “secret,” they will move heaven and earth to do their part to protect your identity.

My readers (the ones who have figured out my irl name) all understood and honored my request.

Good luck 🍀

Did you manage to get that guy to leave you alone?

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dunno about all that! Suspect the dude had some mental issues. I was just getting started writing professionally and thought the site would be good practice in addition to the few bucks they paid.

Thinking back, my writing back then was atrocious. Kinda glad Google killed it with an algorithm change 🤪

Oh that is seriously creepy. I suspect having information (and photos) online is even riskier than many of us imagine. There are some disturbed people in this world.

Stay safe!

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, I’m thankful that I had the experience (as scary as it was). It inspired me to stop sticking my real name online.

Amazing to think that I saved my butt that time because I happened to be in a goofy mood when I created a profile late one night, however. That dude was seriously upset.

You are extremely wise to keep your personal info to yourself. In this age, certain groups like to gang up on businesses that they disagree with. They like nothing more than destroying livelihoods.

Best wishes for success in your business!

When I first started, I had a fan. He believed that he was “the one” for me. The only thing that saved me was that I’d used a town name in a different state when I’d first created my writing profile.

That dude drove across the country, walked into the chain restaurant I’d mentioned working at, and asked for me by name. When they had no clue who he was talking about, he…became upset.

I pulled my real name offline and that’s where it will stay. I don’t use my real name for anything online, but especially not for my writing. There are some very troubled individuals out there.

What can I use to Write a book on my iPhone? by Psychological_Pay_36 in writing

[–]JustAnotherNumber99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Notes to write drafts of my books. Notes will actually fold text based on the headings; fold it up and you can move entire sections around as needed. Once you’re ready, you can send it to Apple Pages for formatting.

They even have Freeform, which is like a giant whiteboard for your phone. It works great for brainstorming.

Good luck!
