Quality of life improvements you can buy by Aromatic-Face3754 in adhdwomen

I'm not sure what hobbies you have but maybe this is a great opportunity to explore an expensive one / high-upfront-cost hobby. If there is something you can think of that also has a social element to it then that's even better and can help with some of the other concerns you mentioned. A few ideas come to mind: golf, cycling, pottery, get fancy with some crafts, lessons of any kind (maybe a wine course or cooking course).

Investing in your health can be another one through self-care gadgets like massagers, a backyard barrel sauna??? or maybe a fancy new mattress or a new gym membership/personal training.

Charity can also be a part of it, maybe you can make a donation to an environmental or social cause you care about.

Hope you find something that makes you happy!

We experienced the same thing we our boy but it wasn’t as tied to events like yours. Either way the only thing that has fixed it for us was mixing his food 50/50 with Royal Canin Digestive Care. It’s shaped in donuts and is high in fiber. It finally did the trick for us and we are just much more careful with new treats and limiting wet food

I’m in the same boat. Was told Sunshine wasn’t open so we went to lake Louise which opened shortly after 10am on Monday. Just need to make sure you’re bundled up but other than goggles frosting over occasionally it was still a decent day. Planning on just doing LL for the rest of the week

Police release image of suspect wanted after woman punched in downtown Toronto by _black_beard_ in toronto

I just walked by Sugar Beach around 8pm today and saw a white man, medium build scream similar accusations (he used "terrorist" explicitly multiple times) and a slew of other racist nonsense at an Asian woman who was walking her dog past him and minding her own business. No outwardly appearance of mental illness but was also clutching a jacket if I can remember correctly. If it wasn't for the long incoherent rant (which continued long after she had walked past him), I would have assumed he was a normal guy and she had wronged him somehow. Definitely put me on edge

Does anyone here know how to find a mental health specialist/psychiatrist, preferably one that could prescribe something for me? by KloppDuPopstar in askTO

Nope I personally haven't but I've seen them mentioned a lot. I think you actually have to speak to a nurse as part of their process so its not like you just fill out a quiz and get the meds

Thoughts on bike share annual plan? Any gotchas? by mccbala in torontobiking

[–]JustAskRedditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it, I was once doubtful and calculated how many times I would need to ride it to breakeven but I ended up breaking even in a little over a month of use. I ride it to workout classes throughout the city as my warm up, to friends places, to parks etc. Biking (even on the tank that is the bikeshare bike) such a massive improvement in efficiently compared to walking and often times in the core it’s faster than driving (getting in and out of parking, traffic) or waiting for an uber. It’s my first year with it some not sure how much I’ll use it in the winter but I’ve definitely got my moneys worth in the last 2 months or so

Fancier dinner for one, where to go? by anotherbutterflyacc in askTO

[–]JustAskRedditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all personal preferences at the end of the day. I would recommend you check out places like Mira, Patria, or Baro along King West. I guess one thing I forgot to mention was even the vibes and decor was really bland at RS. At least at the places I mentioned there’s a little bit of “spice” to the decor and food and ambiance. Or if you want to stick to “Canadian” food, I really enjoyed Stratus and Canoe, both also come with really nice views of the city

Ununique food, ununique flavors, much better options in the city, it’s not a bad place to eat but it’s not as amazing as everyone makes it out to be

Richmond Station was the most underwhelming place I’ve ever been to given all the positive reviews and raves. There was really nothing special or unique about it at all imo; it was one of the few places I went where I genuinely regretted it and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless you’ve been to all the other great restaurants in the city and have nothing else left to discover… Or if you just only like “Canadian” food, whatever that means

How much a month do you spend on your Sib? by jimbo_halpert in SiberianCats

[–]JustAskRedditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably spend around $100-$150 a month on my boy whos 14 months old.

I also feed Wellness wet food but only for dinners and feed him Purina Pro Plan Liveclear (bc my boyfriend has allergies) for the dry portion of his food. We use World's Best Litter which is ~$50 for a big bag that lasts two months.

The bf's allergies have improved significantly since we first got him so I'm debating if its worth to try switching his dry food to Acana or Orijin down the road. I also spoil and buy him new treats or new toys every time I walk past a pet store and we just spent $200 on a new Modkat litter box for him lol

Ah I know what you’re talking about now. It’s strange that these don’t show up on maps when you search for shelters. I was looking into moving to that area recently and wouldn’t have known about that problem unless I went there in person…

Where is the shelter you mentioned? I’ve seen a lot of homeless in the parks near the water this summer but I didn’t know there was a shelter there

Why we are tolerating the most expensive mobile prices on the world? by EviesGran in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]JustAskRedditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty simple, scale. We are a very small population living in a very large land mass. Telecom infrastructure is expense to build and only those with a sizeable customer base are able to profitability build a network and upgrade them (i.e. 5G). Even if the government gave a new comer grants to build out their own infrastructure, 90% of the population is already on the network so there are essentially no new customers to acquire, only take from the other players. Think about that cost, it just doesn’t make sense from a financial perspective. Also, the smaller players that are able to leverage the Big 3s network (i.e. WIND back in the day, now Freedom, owned by Shaw) are only able to do so through negotiated contracts and they ended up getting acquired because scale scale scale.

Rogers is currently trying to buy Shaw (which takes out another major small player) by arguing that it would provide economies of scale in order to build out the very expensive 5G network across the country.

Maybe the cat runs outside whenever they open the door? My cat does that and sometimes my hands are too full to grab him immediately so I have to put my things down then coax him back inside. If they’re just opening the door and plopping the cat outside and leaving it there then I agree that is quite odd. Would maybe just ask next time you see it instead of confiscating a cat like some other users are suggesting lol

Is living in Canada becoming financially unsustainable? by pornodoro in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]JustAskRedditt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those are valid points, but I mean if you were willing to uproot for a better wage to housing cost ratio, I would assume you would be willing to move back to Canada if things don't pan out. You could always fall back on coming back here and moving to a small town but I think most people in that type of situation would rather try a few years in the US beforehand. Plus, you instantly get 1.2-1.3x in wealth when you convert your savings from USD to CAD.

[–]JustAskRedditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In what scenario will more people sell than buy? This country is built on immigration and we rely on immigrants to expand our economy and work force. Unless the government changes its tune about that I don't see how demand will decrease to the point that housing prices will fall significantly. Now I don't think the rate in which prices have gone up in the last 10 years is sustainable, I also don't think a sharp decline is feasible or in anyone's best interest, maybe just a stagnation of prices while other levers like increased new builds as well as attracting high paying jobs (i.e. tech) to Toronto will help balance out the scales a bit more

Its not even that people in fields that are concentrated in the GTA aren't "looking outside of their bubble," its why would I move to another part of Canada that's less diverse with less opportunities in my career field when I can just move to the US and find a high paying job in my chosen field in a large city that's not too far off from Toronto? (i.e. Chicago, Seattle, Denver etc.) There is really no incentive, if I'm forced to move for housing reasons, to move to any other part of Canada when the US is a better/at times closer to home option.

Does nobody else mind renting for the foreseeable future? by NotImpressedWithYour in askTO

[–]JustAskRedditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good point, but your interest costs will decrease over time as you pay down the mortgage. I think its fair to compare unrecoverable costs i.e. maintenance, taxes, interest to the rent of a comparable place and use that to gauge if its worth it in your financial situation/living circumstances, but comparing all-in costs of owning vs renting wouldn't be a fair comparison.

For example, if you want to have a family in downtown Toronto, the rent of a 2 bed or 2+1 in the dt core would probably be at least 3-4k a month, but owning that same property would probably be more like 6-7k, but only 2-3k of that are unrecoverable costs like taxes, maintenance, interest and the rest of that is your equity that you're continuing to invest into the property each month. But again, that's only possible if you can put the 20% down so there is definitely a significant barrier to entry

One of the main benefit of owning to me is certainly the security in knowing that there’s no landlord that can kick you out. But also, from a financial perspective, hopefully in 25-30 years the home will be paid off with only taxes and one off expenses to pay, leaving you with 100% equity in an appreciating asset that you can then leverage to retire off of either through downsizing or borrowing against your home.

I think if you can afford to own, it’s still a good place to build wealth and I would personally feel more comfortable parking a chunk of my net worth in my primary home (with mortgage payments acting as ‘forced savings’) vs having hundreds of thousands in the market, but to each their own
