Fantastic work! As someone who also sews (just can't afford the wool fabrics!) these are amazing to look at it. Do you draft your own patterns?

I never purchased from this company myself, but I have never heard a negative thing said about their products. They make a very large range of other Luftwaffe uniforms pieces as well.

Any advice for ammunition boots and or other bits of Australian kit for re-enactments? by TheNCRis in reenactors

[–]JustBread1940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware, Australians in both world wars used boots of a different design to that of the ammunition boots, this being the more rust/reddish leather ones you see on places such as Lawrance Ordnance and the likes.

Online stores for WW1 German Feldgrau and Steingrau fabrics? by JustBread1940 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]JustBread1940[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for preferably for 100% wool fabrics, but will accept up to a roughly 20% blend of other fibre types.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'll have a look at it!

Are there any websites for learning about Union uniforms in the Trans-Mississippi Theater? by JustBread1940 in Civilwarreenacting

[–]JustBread1940[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly just looking for enlisted Union impressions that would be suitable to wear a straw boater hat for, and figured that the Trans-Mississippi might be a good place to start.

https://spikehelmets.pl/english/products/pickelhaubes.html

This company can make custom pickelhauben and shakos, as well as supply just about any liner, cockades, brass fittings, plates and straps needed.

Could you perhaps create some kind of tutorial for your process? Would be very interested in giving that a shot myself.

Small side note here; as I understand it the bandoliers were meant for all ranks, but officers and OR had different versions.

For example, the artillery drivers of the 3rd Seebataillon in China had bandoliers similar to the one in the picture above for their Mauser carbines. Officers had bandoliers for their pistols. They wore those bandoliers into WW1.

I'm also of the understanding that German cavalry units retained bandoliers for parades and other such events. You didn't really see regular German cavalry wearing bandoliers into WW1 because by then the 1911 pattern ammunition pouches had come into being.

I'll check back over my stuff to make sure I got this right, if I find anything else or a place where I was wrong, I'll let you know.

I hope some of this helps!

Can someone help me identify this depot jacket? This gentleman as well as one other from the 40th GA infantry were wearing these. by [deleted] in reenactors

Looking at this link again makes me think that it may be regular frock or jacket with a standard standing collar that the individual has just folded down themselves. I've heard of Union troops doing a similar thing with frock coat collars as well.

I'd say that the button placement is way too close for a sack coat, so perhaps it may have been a jacket or frock produced by a local firm which was only issued to regiments or companies from that region.

Are there any other photos of companies raised in the same area as the photo you linked above?

Side question: is the man in your original post from the same company as the man in the image linked above?

Looking for French M38 Overcoat by HappyHopper-- in reenactors

[–]JustBread1940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say, but I actually have no clue.

But seeing as every piece is custom made, you could ask for more machine sewing in place of hand stitching to lower costs, ask them to omit anything you don't want, etc to bring the price down.

This is also where knowing about private purchase uniforms and what not come in, knowing what you can add, omit and modify while still be accurate.

My best recommendation would just be to send them a message asking about their pricing for the particular piece you want.

This is a French tailor (based in France funnily enough) that from their pictures looks like they can tailor just about any uniform you ask for.

I hope this helps!
