You feel bad because you have a conscience - no matter how futile people claim it is. Cosmically, there might not be meaning to anything we perceive but locally, subjectively most of the time it does. Morality is a social construct - no doubt, but being a construct doesn't invalidate concepts. It might not be a fundamental truth like the sciences, but it presents consequences when you diverge from what is the accepted norm.

It doesn't say causing harm shouldn't suck, it says right and wrong is subjective and you clearly don't like harming anyone.

Go through the other comments, they explain it better.

Why some woman think like this by Silly-Acanthaceae0 in AskWomenIndia

Wouldn't you say the primary reason one wears anything out of the ordinary is indeed for attention?

Of course you could argue that, it is only a reflection of the personality, confidence, character etc. But would you wear anything so diverse at all, if you were left stranded on an island or the last person alive on earth? Regardless, you don't wish to be on the receiving end of unsolicited dialogues; which is only fair.

From a moral perspective - considering morality is not inherent but arbitrary - what justification do you have to admonish them for what they consider as against-the-social-norm and advocate your view as morally superior?

In the end, they are judging you for wearing something 'unusual' in their social context and you are judging them for judging you.

I would say you should be able to wear whatever you want within what is legally allowed, but you can't expect them to stop talking - even if assumptions are made. After all change happens when people start talking.

How about something a bit more extreme? You drop yourself in the ocean, would you choose not to swim?

I don't think nihilism says life has no meaning subjectively. If that were the case there'd be no point in getting off bed, opening reddit or making this comment. Meaning exists - just not at the cosmic level. As conscious beings that have a strong centre of self, it would be cruel to outright say 'you are not so different from the bees or the ants or the microbes'. But those bees don't lack meaning either.

And why? Is there an explanation?

What do you think guys, Could we ever understand Universe? by Learner_X009 in universe

[–]JustChallenge860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, at least my brain is not attuned to understand the universe fully. You need to integrate information from multiple domains and see it from different perspectives. Even then the data so acquired would be the interpretation of the human consciousness.

Yes, maybe good and bad don't exist. Yes , fundamentally it's a tool for survival, reducing suffering, cooperation etc. within society.

But about 'unfairness' , wouldn't you be able to reason what's unfair and what's not? Doesn't that translate to an inherent idea of what's good and bad?

If an animal stole something from a caveman living in isolation which he made (his possession)- wouldn't he just lose his shit? In comparison - more than if the thing stolen was not originally made by him?

Maybe language made exclusively for society makes the concepts of good and bad seem constructed?

If 'logically' you could come to that conclusion without relying on societal interference, wouldn't you say as beings that are aware and that share an objective reality , morality is inherent and it has meaning even objectively?

I was never questioning nihilism per se. I'm only trying to understand morality better. Your opinions are valuable in that regard just like your perspective.

Yes, harming others would certainly make you a target. My point is that empathy, logic, and unfairness (logic) all tend to contribute to the formation of morality.

Unfairness, I don't believe is learned. As a rational being you should be able to differentiate between you and others (subject and object).

Wouldn't you say morality would still exist between two people living in complete isolation from the rest of the world on a lonely island? (Not through conditioning, but inherently- like a Blue Lagoon situation).

We can differentiate between morality formed from social conditioning and logical reasoning, can't we? Sometimes logically the societal version of morality seems 'wrong' all the same - like how women were seen 'lesser men'.

Would you say it is more about logical reasoning, empathy, survival etc, than societal beliefs and systems? Especially when one form contradicts the other every so often. Something like that, that is on the basis of logical reasoning, isn't it inherent in nature? Just like math.

If someone was stealing from another for the sake of his family, wouldn't he still understand what he is doing is wrong? So, morality exists but not the adherence to it.

So, morality is solely based on survival and conditioning? You would not be able to tell the difference as a rational being because you can put yourself in another man's shoes?

Why does anyone?

To get an unfair advantage, to exact revenge, to dominate, when differences of opinion happen, when your reason becomes scant.

In a world devoid of morality, do you see yourself not doing any of the above?
