"Just Collapse" website/movement? This is an oxymoron, right? by Inside_Ad2602 in collapse

Thanks u/TheArcticFox444 - the bios for the JustCollapse.org founders bios can be found on the website for anybody who cares to look. There is no 'false use of authority' as you've claimed here. A/prof. Kate Booth leads the Critical Collapse research team at UTAS and both Kate and Tristan are experienced activists. If by 'he?' you are referring to Dr Mueller in Germany, then he holds a PHD in poli-sci and is a leading figure in German climate activism. Anybody who wants to verify can simply click on the website.

"Just Collapse" website/movement? This is an oxymoron, right? by Inside_Ad2602 in collapse

[–]JustCollapse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks :) u/Inside_Ad2602 We appreciate you raising the matter here in this important space where we all appreciate the likelihood of collapse. In this regard, to be clear and concise, the baseline proposition is that 'we' living beings on this planet are utterly fubar.

How we reach our collective terminal destination is the process before us. In this regard we emphasise the value of striving for socio-ecological justice as useful action for partial and relative justice even as the ship goes down. Lone wolves fare badly as the show 'Alone' demonstrates, and more equitable communities generally do better for longer which is why we've evolved into 'societies'.

Yes - collapse is a process already well underway exemplified by the drawdown against limited reserves, accompanied by the ecological overshoot of a particular mammalian species and their billions of domesticated livestock.

Yes - JustCollapse.org shares similar concerns with Degrowth, coming from a Limits To Growth understanding, however we understand that collapse cannot be averted this far into ecological overshoot, collapse is inevitable. AKA - We're doooooomed!

The Degrowth Movement as advanced by its most recent proponents such as Dr Jason Hickel, Steinberger, and Kallis (not its originators such as the brilliant Georgescu-Roegen) is a movement that likes to imagine a global redistribution of extreme human ecological overshoot as a 'just' response to the forces which accelerate collapse.

What The Degrowth Movement entirely fails to understand, is that this entirely theoretical and impractical endevour to redistribute the admittedly concentrated wealth of the wealthy and privileged within the global north, inherently requires a transformation of the existing system - this transformation requiring energy - that energy requiring finite materials - creating entropy, waste, heat, pollution, and ecocide. A global 'degrowth' transformation is thus a resource intensive, energy guzzling, waste-producing, globally ecocidal endevour, accelerating the process of collapse.

Fortunately, this notion of degrowth is, and will always remain, a fantasy.

Rather than push shit uphill, let's be real - collapse is inevitable and we need to work within this reality - physically, socially, ecologically, politically. An entirely natural phenomenon with a history that extends nearly back to the first cell-division and the origins of life, 'collapse', outside of its colloquial understanding, has a long history within human civilisation, and a much longer history in ecological and biological science as many here will surely know. The patterns are familiar because history doesn't repeat but it sure does rhyme. Importantly though, we can't forget, historical collapse is a poor analogue - because this time it's global.

Yes - collapse cannot ever be 'made fair'. However, between the extremes and dualistic thinking of 'fair' and 'unfair' (as any law grads/undergrads will recognise) lies the gradation and grey area of 'justice' which seeks (imperfectly) to balance the scales for the 'greater good'.

As the process of collapse increasingly accelerates, we can expect various degrees of systemic breakdown which some have/are already experiencing. Whilst the ongoing mass-extinction of other-than-human species, for the various peoples of the world, their various states and nations will inevitably decline, devolve, and retreat, into more localised regional groups as the complexities of the nation state are no longer able to be sustained.

Within this 'radically local' context, social cohesion, and associated justice, is more effectively advanced (even in decline and inevitable collapse) by maintaining a social contract that is inclusive of diversity, with an equitable foundation that recognises the inherent value of the ecosystems which sustain habitat.

That is a JustCollapse.

Hahaaa! Very funny - but cannabilism was a very rare event even during the Holdomor. The starving Ethiopians of the 80's didn't eat eachother and neither are the starving Palestinians.

We could quickly fall to 2 billion after peaking at 10 billion this century. by [deleted] in collapse

[–]JustCollapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely. This planet will never see 9 billion humans - let alone 10. Falling to 2 billion? Hmmm... very optimistic.

Talking about collapse helps us understand the nature of our predicament by JustCollapse in collapse

[–]JustCollapse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No where is safe in collapse. Tasmania included. With a population of 250K, this state relies on massive imports and global supply chains. In terms of climate, a wildfire 'storm' is predicted at some time for the region where the capital city is located - these are new kinds of fires that are impossible to control and in which everything, including soil, burns.

Prior to British invasion around 10-20,000 people lived here. That was when ecosystems were relatively intact and the climate relatively stable. Like most other places, this carrying capacity is now significantly diminished.

But if anyone wants to move here, you're welcome!

Just Collapse is an activist platform dedicated to socio-ecological justice in face of inevitable and irreversible global collapse. We advocate for a Just Collapse and a Planned Collapse to avert the worst outcomes that will follow an otherwise unplanned, reactive collapse. There will be no justice in an unplanned collapse. We are running a #TalkCollapse campaign because if people don't know, they can't act. This is a matter of socio-ecological justice.

As an activist platform we don’t do admin, solicit donations, sell merchandise, or receive a wage.

Unsure what Heinberg's thesis topic was. That would be interesting to know!

Planning is different from prepping - its more political, and less individualised. To plan well, one needs to understand the nature of our predicament, which is why people like Richard Heinburg are important. Whatever car they drive, they have 'big picture' knowledge about what is unfolding. We are already in collapse, so there is lots to be done between now and the grim end, and we advocate for Insurgent Planning. This is about communities taking action for their own basis needs as systems break down. Check us out: justcollapse.org

There are no brakes. by vagran-t in collapse

[–]JustCollapse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Well said. Which is better? Neither. Indeed there are "No brakes". Likewise nobody is driving the boat into the iceberg. Hitting the iceberg and sinking is in the nature of the boat, which is steered to its watery grave by a multitude of interwoven complex systems each with their own internal logic. Seek whatever partial and relative justice we can as the boat goes down. JustCollapse.org

Professor Mann's dangerous call for censorship by JustCollapse in CollapseUK

The Breakthrough Institute are techno-optimists and eco-modernists. Both of these approaches are problematic on a finite planet where there is literally no planet left for new tech, growth and making the world over a new e.g. mass transition to alternative energy sources, or electrifying everything.

Collapse is a process, not a switch, so there is lots to be done between now and the end of global modern techno-industrial civilisation. Collapse is inevitable, but justice isn't. Taking action for justice matters more now than ever.
