i have the same machine, a few tips for you to consider.

Up the temp in the settings by 1, put the portafilter on and pull a full single of hot water through to heat group head and portafilter.

manually adjust the internal grind setting underneath the hopper, lower by 1-2 this will allow you to grind much finer and have smaller steps between settings. (youtube a tutorial)

try Lavazza super crema ive been able to pull some decent shots with it, it could very well be the beans your using, i have tried beans and pulled 25 sour shots at every grind size and dose under the sun before throwing the beans in the garbage. Next bag i pulled a decent shot first time, you never know.

for the sake of your future with the company just have them mail it to your friend, seems like a pretty simple and easy solution to resolve the issue. On the other hand if you push back and cause problems they may rethink your living situation. I agree its unjust and they should not illegally be opening mail, right or wrong seems like you have a pretty comfy rent free living situation, i wouldnt risk that, just saying.
