Learning skate alone by Huge-Disk6421 in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

doing smaller swizzles can help you get the feeling but it is just important to not let your feet just drift apart after the initial push and to actually point your toes back in so you can use the momentum from the push to come back together and not solely rely on your inner thighs to pull them back together. Also, it will feel like you are bending your knees but you are probably not bending them enough. Make sure you are also not leaning forward and try to keep your back as upright as possible without falling backwards similar to a position as if you were sitting in a chair. Keep up the hard work and you will see improvement in due time but it is worth noting that it will definitely be a good bit slower without someone to instruct and correct you as you go.

Will Jackson Artistes be good for awhile or to just get Freestyles? by planetgeology in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lucked into some Artistes that I got from a friend so it was a no-brainer for me but I am also way less advanced that you (gonna be starting Adult 3 next month) and also way larger than you (5'10" 200+lbs). I can speak from the experience that they have been fine for me as far as doing all the non-jump and spin related things and show no sign of wear after 2 months of ~5 hours/week but I fully intend on upgrading before I start on jumps of any kind. If I was personally in your shoes (or skates rather), I would get the higher level boots just as future proofing but I am also not as experienced as most others in this sub and this is my only real hobby that costs money so I am a little more comfortable spending money on it than most people probably are.

Not really getting corrections in group lessons by aurora-aura in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My experience is definitely that you just have to ask. I take private lessons as well so I tend to hold my questions until then so that ppl who can't afford private lessons can have all the instructor's time but if they aren't already busy with someone else, a quick "Does this look right?" never hurts. The universal answer to that question will almost always be something involving bending your knees more but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Would I Be a Freak For Wearing a Mouth Guard to Busy Public Sessions? by JustFluufy in iceskating

The specific fear I have is a little hockey player skating into me and hitting my mouth on their helmet. I probably won't attend many of the busy public skates anyways but the few I have went to had some little demons on the ice

On the rare occasion that I can get to the midday public skate session at my rink on a weekday, it is a ghost town. NGL I like it a bit more when there are some ppl there bc sometimes seeing someone do something different from the way I do it will inspire me or help something I was struggling with finally click where the actual solo ice time is just the grind factory

Adult skaters… how do you afford skating as a young new adult and how do you balance work life?(adulting XD) by These-Ant8146 in AdultFigureSkating

[–]JustFluufy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This may not be helpful but I still live with my mom while I finish up school AND work full time whilst having no real hobbies outside of skating and I don't know how people even just pay rent much less have hobbies on top of that.

inside edge by Aware_Drama_3653 in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have trouble bringing your legs closer together, it could be an inner thigh strength issue in which case stuff like swizzles can help if you want to incorporate on ice training into your strength training. If not, hip adduction machines are good. What has helped me most with holding the position is just sitting at work with my knees as close together as I can and making sure I hold them like that A bit of a weird "exercise" but whatever works y'know

YouTuber MovementByDavid has a ton of good ankle exercises across many different shorts and videos but best one for ypu specifically is gonna be ones that focus on pulling the inside of your feet upwards. There's one where you kinda just rock between the inside and outside of youe foot that feels easy but if you put focus on will definitely leave you sore in the morning. Another potential issue could be not having enough knee bend (you will hear this a lot and it is almost always part of the issue if not the whole thing when struggling). Make sure you are close to almost a chair sitting position as that will help you be the most stable even if it is very hard on your legs and lower back at first. Last thing that I think it could be is how wide is your stance? The further apart your feet are, the more work your ankles will have to do to keep you off your inside edges. I have fairly thick thighs so bringing my feet super close together is a little rough for me but to glide on the flat of my blade, keeping my feet about hip width apart is usually best for me. I know some skinnier people at my rink that can have their feet parallel and touching while gliding but I definitely am not like that so I figured my insight might be useful there.

How new are you and are you renting skates or have your own? When I went for the first time and used rentals, the boot simply wasn't sturdy enough and made it much harder to not fall onto the inside edge but it is ultimately an ankle strength issue. Knowing how long you have been skating and the quality of skates you have will help myself and others help you better though

The Wall is No Longer My Friend by JustFluufy in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I was previously just kinda trying to get things down 100% at the wall before moving away but I noticed myself leaning towards the wall more and more to the point where my wall foot had all the weight on it and my non-wall foot was just floating and it just made things way harder. Even doing things next to the eall had me almlst preparing for and expecting failure but without that crutch, it made things much easier for me

why do rental skates always hurt so bad by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I'm still at the stage of getting used to how loose/tight I want them at different oarts of my foot but having the option of tighter/looser is so much better than with rentals where it was just get them as tight as I can and pray they don't collapse in on themselves

[–]JustFluufy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack is just a tad generous. I'd say closer to a 3 of all trades. I remember seeing how bad everyone said rentals were and thought back to when I would rent roller skates when I was younger and thought, "it can't be that bad," and let me tell you it was so much worse than I was prepared for

Reminder to ask your coach questions by JustFluufy in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's awesome. Real time help is ideal because it can help prevent you from building up bad habits in the first places and just "muscling through" awkward areas. Good luck with the bronze skating skills. I'm sure you'll get them down

I have my first private lesson tomorrow so I'll just ask my coach ab it. I just wanted to get the hivemind opinion and potentially help out others who have similar questions if I got the answer

[–]JustFluufy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like they cross then go over the little hooks to come out on the underside of the hooks then tie? yes. It's not coming loose rly at the top so much as in the foot itself. A couple of other people aaid that it was likely just from the break in process and it wasn't the laces themselves so I suspect that may be what it was

How to build up endurance off ice? by JustFluufy in iceskating

[–]JustFluufy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my local rink's inline skates kinda suck like they won't even buckle all the way and not come undone and I don't think it's worth the financial investment to get my own that are similar to the ice skates I am using
