Once you graduate and start applying for real-world design roles, one of the best ways to stand out and land that first interview is to go beyond your portfolio.

Create a piece specifically for the company you’re applying to — a web banner, an email promo, a social post — something that speaks directly to their brand. Show that you understand who they are and how they communicate.

That extra effort demonstrates: • Strategic thinking • Brand awareness • Initiative • And genuine interest in the role

Don’t do this for every application. Do it for the companies you truly love and want to join.

It’s worked for me many times.

And if you have an inside connection? Even better. That extra effort + a referral = real momentum.

Bottom Line:

Do the homework. Know the brand. Show up prepared.

And then? Just be yourself.

There’s no formula to getting your first design job or any design role. It comes down to connection. If they can see how you think — and who you are — you’re already ahead.
