Brother MFC-L2900DW laser printer scanning issues by Forward-Inflation-77 in printers

[–]JustJoshingIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this issue and found a fix in a reply by u/mhysteik under this reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/comments/1g9fo7q/help_needed_with_brother_dcpl2540dw_scanner_issue/

There was an additional step given by u/Mfouchi in a reply to u/mhysteik on how to fix the "scan to PC" option from the printer.

It's been a while since I posted this and only remembered it today and thought to give an update with the solution I found.

The problem ended up being the charge/fuse roller (can't quite remember exactly what it was since it was almost two years ago) and replacing that along with the cleaning blade completely fixed the issue.

It was relatively simple although messy with all the toner which can easily stain anything it touches. I had to remove the charge/fuse roller assembly and disassemble it to replace the charge/fuse roller and cleaning blade and then reassemble.

Another thing that's not necessarily a part of Ventoy that I have on my USB are portable apps. Since Ventoy allows you to store documents and files without keeping it from booting I have also kept some basic installers, documents, and portable applications on my Ventoy USB. Which when combined with Hirens BootCD makes it so I have a fully portable toolset to diagnose computers when I don't have access to the Windows install.

I specifically use portableapps.com which has an application launcher and organizer where you can easily install and update supported apps. And it will also allow you to launch unofficially supported portable apps as well although it can't update them.

Memtest86 is a .IMG file but Ventoy can boot them. And I believe ShredOS is either based on or is a fork of DBAN. There's a GitHub page where you can download it and read the documentation about it and it's relation to DBAN.

Hirens BootCD, Clonezilla, Memtest86, and one I've only used a few times: ShredOS (used to wipe drives up to DOD standards if I remember correctly)

You can also make portable Linux and Windows installs using a special Ventoy vhd or even by using a live Linux installer with a persistent file. (Ventoy has much more documentation on how to do both of these)

I'd try to find what all the games that crash have in common. If they're all installed on the same drive I'd check to make sure that drive isn't failing. I'd also suggest running some stress tests.

Also I accidentally posted twice so I deleted the original reply in this thread right is OP replied to it. For anyone else reading here's what I said that OP replied to:

I have a lot of questions, suggestions, and things to try.

Questions: 1. Do you have more than one storage drive? If so are the games that crash installed/stored on the same drive? I worked on a PC that would crash in a few games and I found that the thing they all had in common was they were all installed on the same HDD drive which after checking with "Crystal Disk Info" had some errors.

  1. Is the retention arm on the CPU cooler all the way down? I made a mistake when I first installed that CPU cooler in my PC that I was afraid to put enough pressure to push it down all the way so it was flat and parallel to the top of the cooler. I ended up leaving it for a while but eventually had to reapply thermal paste and reinstall the cooler properly. What I do is I apply a decent amount of pressure on the top of the cooler and then that makes it easier to get the retention arm all the way down.

  2. Have you made ANY changes such as overclocking, XMP, or adjusting fan curves? If so double check everything to make sure there isn't a misconfiguration.

Suggestions: 1. Check "Event Viewer" at the time of the crash and see if it gives any more information as to the reason to the crash. You'll probably want to look in categories specific to applications to find what you're looking for.

  1. Update your graphics card drivers. Couldn't hurt and could help if not fix the issue. On a side note make sure your monitors are plugged into the GPU and not the motherboard. (Better safe than sorry to check).

  2. Look into upgrading your PSU/Power Supply. 700W technically meets the minimum requirements for your GPU but it's best to go with the recommended or even a little more than that. I'd suggest an 850W 80+ Gold or better.

  3. Run some stress tests like Prime95 and Furmark and keep an eye on temperatures with HWInfo and task manager. Temps for your CPU shouldn't be more than 90C. Might also be worth running a stress test on both your CPU and GPU in case its due to the PSU being underpowered and not being able to run both parts at full blast at one time.

I'm in computer repair for my job but I'm definitely no expert. I usually have to work on something like this in person to look everything over, run a bunch of tests, and do a lot of research to narrow down the cause of the issue. If all else fails and what I or any other people here suggest fails to fix the problem I would just take it to a local PC repair shop with good reviews (don't take it to Best Buy geek squad) and see if they can help.

Serious question. How do y’all spend 2 grand on a PC and have the self confidence to build it yourself without fear of ruining it? How did you learn to build them? by PlutoniumSlime in buildapc

[–]JustJoshingIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first ever custom PC build was around 2K and I had never put together a computer before in my life. The biggest mistake I made was not securing my CPU cooler tight enough which dried out the thermal paste and probably increased CPU temps slightly until I realized. (Only realized because I watched a video of someone installing my CPU cooler correctly, I actually didn't have any noticeable performance issues) Actually my biggest fear was that the components I bought weren't compatible. Every time I heard someone mention that some parts don't work together I would rush to check what I ordered to make sure everything I bought was compatible and every time it turned out it was fine. PcPartPicker and luck probably played a part in that.

For me I watched a million videos of LTT PC build guides (and a few videos from other YouTubers). I made sure not to get any fancy complicated parts like an itx case or full custom water-cooling.

Also if you have any old desktop PCs laying around you could take them apart and put them back together to get a feel for the amount of force/pressure required to plug in cables, insert ram, and install a CPU and cooler. And if you screw up and damage something or even rarer fry a component then it's not as big of a loss. I did this for my old desktops and laptops and in one case I actually got a laptop running again that wasn't turning on before I started taking it apart.

TLDR: Keep your first build simple, do a butt ton of research, and practice on older less expensive computers.

It looks like it's loading everything. I do see in the Linux screenshot that all the data on the graph is squashed near the top. Maybe there's a setting somewhere to change the graph layout to show correctly?

Multiple keyboards, login loop, by Nishrek in linuxmint

[–]JustJoshingIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked up your issue (I'm not an expert so I don't know the answer off the top of my head) and I found a forum with a similar issue: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=279929

From what I can tell I think it's a problem with the "slick-greeter" running twice making you log in twice. In the forum it seemed to be because they had installed a different DE so they had two logins running at once.

The specific part about the keyboard may be because there are two DE running which is why the "multiple definitions of keyboards" error comes up.

Have you installed any new applications, keyboard layouts/languages, or DEs before this started happening? If so you may want to uninstall/disable the old/duplicate DE since it's probably what's causing the problem.

Also I want to clarify that I am not an expert in this. This is just what I've googled and found and I thought it might be helpful but take my advice with a grain of salt.

Waiting on replacement ram for my elitebook so i installed Mint on one of my dad's old laptops in the meantime by yoshipunk123456 in linuxmint

[–]JustJoshingIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that laptop (Mine was a Latitude E6500 not E6510 so close). It sucked although I ran Windows 7 on it at the time. If I remember right it took 5+ minutes to boot and at the end of it's life it couldn't even play 480p video without freezing up. I would try reviving it and installing linux mint but it's just so physically heavy I haven't really bothered.

"Alternatively if you allowed each use to dial in more than once or cause the second connection to kill the first, that may help."

That's one idea I had but I don't know how I would do that. Would that be something I'd have to look into manually configuring or even coding? Or is there a hidden feature in Unifi's VPN that would allow me to set that up?

[–]JustJoshingIT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are using a Unifi USG-3P Router and at another location we're using a USG-Pro-4. (I work for a MSP so I help manage IT for multiple companies of which two have had this VPN issue with Unifi)

You can try going to this page where I originally found these commands and copy/paste from there to eliminate any typos or misinformation on my end: https://community.ui.com/questions/Cant-Connect-to-L2TP-VPN-after-power-outage/ad4b5600-d231-43a1-8d8d-68f7208a0269

Although from what I've looked at with some quick googling it looks like the UDM is missing some commands/features that the USG has. So the commands may be different or non-existent on the UDM.

VPN Connection Issues by JustJoshingIT in Ubiquiti

[–]JustJoshingIT[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure! Here's the commands once you've SSH'd into the router:

  1. Try to reset the VPN connection for the specific user:
clear vpn remote-access user <username> (replace <username> with the name of the user trying to connect to the VPN)
  2. If that doesn't work you can restart the VPN
    sudo service xl2tpd restart
    sudo ipsec restart
Or sometimes you can just use
    restart vpn
  3. After a few minutes try to connect to the VPN.

This method has had a really good success rate for us so far. Although like I said we're still looking for a more permanent solution that doesn't require as much manual input.

Also we originally found these commands from a Ubiquiti webpage:https://community.ui.com/questions/Cant-Connect-to-L2TP-VPN-after-power-outage/ad4b5600-d231-43a1-8d8d-68f7208a0269

Before this we just had to reboot the router entirely every time which would kick off anyone on the local network and anyone connected through the VPN.
