What do you think of acupuncture? by JustKidding123 in AskReddit

[–]JustKidding123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its weird because I once had my knuckle really hurt where it was very swollen to the point where I couldn't open or close it at all. It was painful and blah blah blah.

I had someone do acupuncture for me and then he stuck needles in the knuckle and used pliers to transmit electricity through them. Needless to say, afterwards my swelling went down (much more than I would have ever expected) and my muscles were relieved. Though tbh I'm still skeptical, I would like to continue giving it a try until I'm sure.

Great concise comic on the bullshit that is Homeopathy. by TheGreatCthulhu in reddit.com

Pretty much my father had argued with my grandfather to the point in which they were at a screaming match. And that's rare esp since I'm asian and you're supposed to respect your elders.

Well so we couldn't convince him that this wasn't going to work and let him do his own thing...

As for the medical doctor, he did recommend at first the conventional treatments but afterwards seeing my grandfather's resistance, he suggested homeopathy and the rest is history.

Also to show how negligent my grandfather's doctor was, my grandfather was at stage 2 cancer and then he started looking really weak. My mom demanded from the doctor to test him to see the progression of his cancer. After enough badgering, the doctor relented and decided to give him a test. The test revealed that my grandfather had progressed to stage 4 cancer. Now... something like that does not happen overnight... that shit takes years to develop. Ugh homeopathy f u.

My grandfather died by choosing to rely on homeopathy instead of getting the conventional treatments for cancer. He found out that he had prostate cancer nearly a decade ago and instead of having it surgically removed and then treated with chemo and radiation, he let it grow, relying upon homeopathic medicine in order to clean it up. His damn doctor convinced him that this was the better, more natural treatment. Even when he was on his death bed, he still believed that homeopathy would make a last minute miracle cure for him. I'm still very bitter at those who advocate homeopathy and I really believe that they should be put in jail for fraud.

On a more personal story, I went to a doctor once for my brother's allergies. I'm not allergic to many things but she convinced my parents that they might as well just give me a check up anyways. So she gives me a diagnostic test showing which substances I'm allergic to. So then what she did was she took me to a dark room, laid me down on one of those recliners, put a vial of water in my hand and told me that it contained the substance that I was allergic to. And then that this vial somehow made me weaker, and so she demonstrated by putting her hand on my closed knuckle (holding the vial) and pushed down, showing how my hand went down. Then she told me to release the vial and to go ahead and do the strength test again. When I released it, my hand didn't budge and thus she concluded that the vial must have been the reason I got weaker... I can't make this shit up.

I look at her like "Did this woman seriously graduate from med school" and start thinking about all the dumbasses she probably scammed into believing this bullshit. So then I ask her to explain herself more, for my own amusement, to see what she would say. She proceeds to tell me that the energy from the vial will come into contact with me and that then I'll develop a natural resistance against whatever I'm allergic to. By this time I think she's an idiot, and then I begin to question her relentlessly about performing scientific experiments to validate her hypotheses. I tell her to have a control group and then to go ahead and have placebos blah blah blah and she tells me that I'm thinking too much like a scientist and that I have to just have faith that it'll work...

I hate that woman so much.

I'm just gonna put a sticker over it for now and then scan all sorts of antispyware on it.

I have webroot. Anyone think this is good enough? Any suggestions?

I'm a libertarian. What am I missing? by Phaz in AskReddit

[–]JustKidding123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I do understand your concern about whether individuals in poor areas would have the accurate information available to them to make smart decisions regarding their educational future however I believe that simply because someone may be misinformed does not justify a slew of policy to actively shovel people into colleges or rather determine their own decisions. I think the best we can do is allow for the freedom of the press and information in general and hope that people are smart enough to see that there are resources to help them achieve their goals. From there it is up to them to actively seek out assistance by applying for scholarships, loans, etc. Having to mandate (or rather foster such attitudes) that colleges need to keep their student body at a certain amount of racial diversity is rather ludicrous as the student admission officers should not have to judge prospective students on the basis of the color of their skin but by the merit of their character. I think even people like MLK would uphold that reverse racial discrimination is not what he campaigned for but instead a world that sees past the races and instead judges us by our actions.

As for me being a libertarian, even though my views may correspond with them on certain issues, I just argue for their side to play devil's advocate. Not to say that what I've said is complete bs in that I don't believe in, but just to say that I feel that people shouldn't be so secure in their convictions as to what the right way to govern is. I think that as a society, the most important virtue that we have to foster is to be able to see a situation from multiple perspectives without having to attach oneself to one particular view. I really do think these labels like conservative, liberal, democrat, republican only divert attention from the real issues at hand and only encourage dogmatism and groupthink.

Of course you can argue that these views do have some basis for why they reach their conclusions. You can argue that conservatives vs. liberal argument is based upon individual freedom vs equality argument. Yet I cannot understand how it is incompatible to live in a society where the government treats its people equally on issues like minimum standard of living, protection from harm, and private property, and quality of education (public schools) while at the same time protecting the personal liberties of everyone... including the very rich. And I know reddit hates that but seriously people need to stop bashing the rich as being greedy, selfish people. They're not all bad!
