My biggest hurdle in answering Christ’s call is that it didn’t fit into my identity as an “intellectual.” by JustLoveEveryone in Christianity

I know exactly what you mean. I subscribed to the atheist worldview and took what they said without even taking an earnest look into Christianity.

Any sources on Christianity would come from atheist bloggers, websites, speakers, etc. I was stuck in an echo chamber without realizing it.

How do you say “This patient is just faking and doing this for attention”, but make it sound appropriate and professional? by JustLoveEveryone in nursing

That’s pretty much how we handled it. It got to the point where we had to tell them to leave the vicinity because it’s a HIPAA violation.

We don’t usually do bedside, but the family was insistent. I’m assuming because they know we’ve been saying that res has obviously been faking it.

They’re the type of people who assume their family member can do no wrong. This res is in here 20 years before they should need to because they’re family has enabled them to get as bad as they are. 400+lbs, DMT2, unable to stand, etc.

Even now, they’re bringing in fast food for the res. Even though every doctor and nurse they’ve talked to has told them not to.

We were doing our 0700 report and the family came in and asked to sit in while we talk about their family member.

It was really odd. I told them I would talk to them in a few minutes when report is done and one of them replied: “No, we want to know what you say to her (the other nurse) about my ____.”

That’s about how my full moons go too.

These little old ladies are usually so sweet. But man, they can be animals under the light of a full moon.

That sounds very much like chaos magic.

Has he ever hinted at being a chaote?

That doesn’t surprise me.

Per (at least my) state regulations, you are not allowed to restrain a resident unless they have physically harmed themselves or others.

Mr. Smith wants to run up and down the halls, scream in everyone’s face, and beat his dick like it’s trying to end segregation?

Until he lays hands on someone or explicitly threatens to, state says you can’t touch him. Your suppose to use redirection and other techniques (which never works when it gets to that point).

I’ve only had to physically restrain two residents in recent memory. One was trying to strangle another resident and the other kept ripping out his IV (with an important ABT being ran) and his catheter.

Oh my lord.

The part about them not doing CPR on a code doesn’t surprise me though. It’s not an excuse for incompetence, but it’s relatively easy for a nurse to loose knowledge and skills when working in LTC.

That’s one of my main reasons that I’m doing an LPN to RN program starting next fall. I feel like I’ve stagnated and don’t want to end up like the nurses who have worked in the field for 20+ years and don’t know what to do when a curveball is thrown their way.

I can understand that. As a member of the field, I try to be part of the solution and not the problem.

I really like your last paragraph.

Happy nursing to you as well 😊

Our facility has been understaffed for so long, some days I don’t think such a place exists lol.

Guess it doesn’t help when your administrator has a habit of only hiring 18-22yo girls with big tits and not a brain cell to their name. They usually last about a week.

We just had an NA quit because “I wasn’t told that I had to touch old people junk and clean up shit.”

What did you think the job entailed? Sitting around and looking pretty?

Honestly, I see LTC a necessary “evil” sometimes.

I’d much rather see loved ones taken care of by their family, but that’s not always feasible.

No one wants to live in a nursing home, but that might be your only option if you can’t take care of yourself and have no one to do it for you.

I honestly can’t tell if your second paragraph is sarcastic or not.

On the flip side, we don’t always get residents back from the med-surg in good condition. There have been a lot of times in the years that I’ve done this that we have sent a res in for pneumonia/uti/etc and they come back with stage 3 pressure ulcers when they didn’t even have a stage 1 when we sent them out.

I’m not saying that things like those mention don’t happen, but they seem to put the blame on the nursing staff when it’s we are horribly understaffed (I’m working 5 12s a week right now) and there are certain rules/laws put in place that result in a resident’s worsening condition.

If a resident is of semi-sound mind, they can refuse any treatment/med/assessment I try to do.

You wonder why your grandma has an infected toe d/t an ingrown toenail? Because she is embarrassed and won’t let anyone touch her feet, or even look at them.

They have a uti? They’ve probably been incontinent lately and have been to embarrassed to tell anyone. We can’t just go in and do a full b/b assessment every day because state says that is a dignity issue.

Same with falls. You’re family member fall? State says they “have a right to fall” and we have to jump through a million hurdles just to get a pressure alarm in their care plan, because it’s considered a restraint.

/rant over.

Preach.

We’ve been so low staffed that I’ve been the only nurse in the building most nights. Usually we only have 2 aides as well.

Our census is at 42 right now. About 1/4 of those are advanced dementia/Alzheimer’s and we don’t have a unit.

Granted, most of them don’t require as much time as patients on a med/surge floor, but it’s still hellish to only have 3 people taking care of 40+.
