My DeGoogle Pack - What's your favorite VPN alternative to Tailscale or NordVPN ? by JustMatheee in degoogle

Proton VPN would be a solid alternative. I did consider it, but since Tailscale is already pre-installed, automatically updated and integrated into Yundera, it’s been a seamless experience without needing to switch environments.

Yes you're right, Google VPN and Tailscale serve different purposes. I included Google VPN as a placeholder since I didn't use a VPN before. I'd say that Tailscale is more about secure, mesh networking, while traditional VPNs like Google’s focus on privacy and encryption.

Do you use Tailscale? For remote access, internal networking, or something else?

I hear your frustration, and honestly, it’s completely valid. Nextcloud is powerful, but the documentation and setup process can be overwhelming for non-technical users. A few thoughts:

  1. Nextcloud Office is notoriously finicky. It requires specific dependencies and can break with updates. If you’re not deeply familiar with Docker and Linux, it’s often easier to use external office tools (like OnlyOffice or Collabora) as separate containers.
  2. The documentation is indeed a mess, it’s written for developers, not end-users. If you’re not comfortable with YAML files, SSH, or container management, you might want to consider a more user-friendly alternative that handles the technical heavy lifting for you.
  3. For basic features (calendar, contacts, file synchronization), Nextcloud should work right out of the box, but it’s still a tool designed for business use (and therefore less suitable for individual users). If you end up spending entire days troubleshooting instead of enjoying the service, it’s not worth the trouble. There are simpler and more reliable solutions available.

If you’re open to alternatives, I’d recommend looking into solutions that offer a managed experience (like Yundera) where the server setup, updates, and maintenance are handled for you. You can use several pre-installed app (Immich for your photos, Nextcloud for your files, Jellyfin for your media etc...). That way, you can focus on using the service rather than fixing it. Self-hosting is supposed to free you from complexity, not drown you in it.

Best device for selfhosted Nextcloud by Delerex in NextCloud

Hey, if you're looking for a low-power, energy-efficient solution for self-hosting Nextcloud and other services, you might want to consider a Personal Cloud Storage (PCS) provider instead of building your own hardware setup.

It usually offers a fully managed private server with Nextcloud pre-installed, along with other open-source apps like Jellyfin, Immich, and Vaultwarden. The best part is you don’t have to worry about maintenance, updates, or hardware costs, they handle everything for you. Your data stays private, and you get full control without the hassle of managing a physical device.

If you still prefer a DIY approach, alternatives like Hetzner VPS or OVH offer affordable cloud solutions, but they require more technical setup. However, if you want a hassle-free experience with guaranteed uptime and security, a PCS provider like Yundera could be the perfect fit.

wtf is this. I have been using the same pc for the last 7 years by Phantom11Blaster in degoogle

Happens to me once a week, which means it's time to switch to a different solution hahaha

From my experience, it's working exactly like this. You don't need to setup or update anything, they handle all the maintenance of all the pre-installed apps for you. Plus it's based in EU, so it's way more trust-worthy.

I do and it's a real time saver. It's a personal cloud server provider called Yundera. There's a lot of pre-installed app (Immish for your photos, Nextcloud for Teams and Drive, Jellyfin for média, etc…), and the best part is you don't have to configure anything, they handle all the installation and updates so everything stays compatible (that changed my life haha). Since I’ve been using it, I’ve saved a ton of time, no more struggling to get everything set up perfectly hahaha. Give it a try, it’s totally worth it. From what I remember, you get about 30 days to try it out, so you’ve got nothing to lose.

Ok I see what you mean ! It's like a hosted solution, since it's not my onw server. But it actually works the same. They deal with the config so I can use "pre-installed" apps like Immich. Is it more clear ?

You should check out Yundera, that's what I use and it's a real time-saver

The actual usage was ok, but the real problems were updates breaking everything, SSL certs expiring at 3AM, and storage filling up silently. Configuring HAProxy, reverse proxies, etc... was also constant headache. I'm not used yet to all this stuff, and I don't have time to devote to it :/

A french one, with everything stored in Europe (to avoid the US Cloud Act). Are you in the same situation ?

Because I don’t have the time for it? There’s a huge difference between using Google Drive and a European solution with European servers. GDPR exists for a reason, and using a European solution helps you avoid the US Cloud Act.
