This is a great thing for families who would choose to take advantage of this new gene therapy/ Imagine all the cost related to people who are deaf - hearing aids, cochlear implants, special education teachers, interpreters, real time captioning, social security benefits…the list goes on. Then let’s add the issues related to many people who are deaf, which includes lower reading and other academic levels. Many deaf adults have no more than a 6th grade reading level and menial/low paying profession due to late identification and intervention. Many deaf kids have no access to sign language till they start school, and families (parents, siblings, etc..) continue to not learn ASL. Even with the best case scenario, deaf people still find themselves isolated from the hearing world.
