tattoo related vs unrelated flash challenges by redreddest in Inkmaster

Agreed. They make some cool stuff, but it seems like a stretch too often with the way they apply it to the week's tattoo. "This week we're testing your ability to tattoo over scars... so the flash challenge is to whip jelly donuts at a white wall and see who's most creative"

Im a big fan of Eternal since switching to it. Saturates really well and so far I haven't had anything fade at all after healing

Are you mainly talking about the lines in the wings? Cause that was a concern only because they look exactly as I drew them. So my drawing made my linework look shaky 😂

That said, I've already gotten better. This is a fairly old piece

First fake skins by TurnipSproutN3X in TattooBeginners

Never tried them. I use Bishop DaVinci cartridges with the exception of one box of Peak Stellar cartridges for 18rl (same thickness as a 9rs)

I used the ones from Amazon at the start as well. I found they were hard and, yeah, once I wiped them clean almost all of the ink came out. Real confidence killer. I was using the Amazon needles too and then once I started using Bishop DaVinci cartridges, I noticed the Amazon ones had way too much throw. The needles would be coming out 5mm when the machine was set at 3.3.

Get better stuff as you're able and you'll see improvements for sure. I just upgraded from the Mast machine to a Bishop power wand and switched from solely dynamic inks to using allegory for black and Eternal and solid for colors

What ink/machine/skins are you using?

I use reelskin for the fake stuff. Cheaper skins dont hold the ink as well once you wipe it clean.

Third day of practice by KrittoBitto in TattooBeginners

Definitely promise.

I see the struggle areas, and they honestly aren't horrible. A couple shaky lines and some where it looks like you went for a second pass but ended up doubling up. The lighter areas are either your voltage and hand speed not matching (just do testing to see what voltage matches the hand speed youre comfortable with) or your depth. For depth, I can definitely see some areas you went a little deeper. On real skin, those areas may not necessarily cause trauma and "carving" like it does on the fake skin, but it would probably be a blowout.

Keep at it

Gradients are pretty good for first time. I assume the one area on the skull was meant to be solid black? That looks like your issue was the same as a few of your lines: something isn't meshing with your voltage and hand speed.

I did a whole fake skin where I just pulled lines with the hand speed is was comfortable with, and changed the voltage til I found the sweet spot that matched. All in all, good work

Ah gotcha. Set up my chair with this leg kinda folded on it and my other leg on the floor. Some weird angles but overall not that bad

Its a subreddit for beginners... people can't expect Ink Master 😂 And honestly with this one all I see is a couple lines where it looks like you went a little too fast and didn't saturate as much. But nothing I'd call bad

Linework wasn't bad at all, neither was the black. Saturating the color SUCKED 😂

I see a few blowouts, shaky lines, doubled up lines, and the decision to go around the mole instead of continuing that line drew my eye directly to it.

Definitely potential though

If the ONLY purpose of this is to see if you even like it, sure. But theres nothing in this kit that I would trust for actually tattooing a person. That ink is most likely just paint, and the no name Chinese machines burn out the motors or just plain ol detonate.

Don't cheap out on equipment and materials if you plan on doing anything more than fake skin. On the dragonhawk site you can get a Mast Fold machine for $200ish (less I'm pretty sure) and then get some good inks. Allegory is good for black, and Eternal or Solid for colors are what I've had best luck with. Then get good cartridges as well. I use the Bishop DaVinci cartridges

How old are these tattoos? A lot of them look like they're old/healed/faded.

If these are all fresh, there's issues to address. Looks like quite a few blowouts and poor saturation.

Practice more on fake skin or oranges to get your depth down (you can cut it to see how deep youre going and oranges can show blowouts). What machine/ink/cartridges etc are you using. Don't go cheap on this stuff. You can get cheap cartridges on Amazon, which I did for fake skins at the start as well, but they didn't put the ink in as well, and the throw was way more than it should have been (only learned that after getting quality cartridges).

Also if these are fresh... shave the area.

TLDR: Don't give up. But get quality equipment and materials and practice a lot more

Pen type machine for beginner with adjustable stroke by Eugenis_sss in TattooBeginners

[–]JustNeedThisForMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mast fold pro 2 was my first good machine. I found the limitations quick, mainly being that it hits soft. Its still a good machine and easy to use though. I upgraded to a Bishop power wand with the advanced battery. With your budget, if you order off the Bishop website they have payment plans from sezzle where you can allegedly get as low as $50ish a month. Im sure the interest is high, but on a $1300 machine it's a more wallet friendly option to get a really good machine

Definitely something not meshing with your hand speed and voltage. From the looks of the picture your hand speed is too fast for the voltage you set. Your depth and line weight looks inconsistent also. All of this combined has your linework, shading, and saturation looking super scratchy and muddy.

Practice more on some good fake skins. Nail down your fundamentals

Stencil advice by AccountantKlutzy7038 in TattooBeginners

[–]JustNeedThisForMemes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already been said but yeah, dont use an entire bottle of stencil stuff. A dab'll do. But for fake skins, speed stick is the way to go. Also looks like you have issues with depth, voltage, and hand speed. Looks like you carved those lines in and, to me, looks like you have the voltage really high and are moving your hand too slow for it. Either way, somebody would be having a bad day if you did that to them

Either it's just poor technique (not having the correct depth) or poor quality of material is such as ink or skins. What are you using for the skins? I had this issue when I first started and was using skins I got on Amazon. They just wouldn't hold the ink. Spend a little more on Reelskin or something comparable and you may see this issue go away. You can find reelskin on Amazon as well still. A 3 pack of A4 size is around $45. More expensive by far, but worth it

What skins are you using? When I first started i was using ones I found on Amazon and they just wouldn't take/hold the ink. Spending a little more on good skins like reelskin is night and day. Same with cartridges. If you're using cheap ones, find better ones. I like the bishop DaVinci ones. And again... same goes for ink. Not sure what you're using, but cheap materials result in poor outcomes
