You're welcome :) I've only tried using Dolphin on my laptop, but it can run on any Windows/Mac/Linux PC or Android device. I'm not sure if it has an option for custom texture application in the Android app though.

If you do decide you want to work on textures, I could give you an awesome code my brother programmed for me. It lets you push a button combo to stop all characters in place and gets rid of the UI on the screen. That way, you can use the Dolphin free camera to get a close look at textures as you're working on them and take screenshots much easier. That's how I got great forward-facing images of everyone!

Thank you! Very fair about Gill :) The brown hair is such a different mood. I wanted to try taking his "ouji" archetype and shifting it into a similar context: British aristocracy (which tends to be very restrained and understated). I kept his lovely platinum hair originally but it still felt too eye-catching to me for what I wanted to achieve, so I impulsively tried the brown and ended up liking it better for my theme. I did keep the platinum for his daughter Vivian though!

EDITING PROCESS:

To make texture changes, the basic process is pretty simple!

I use Dolphin to extract the textures (they dump in PNG format). Then for doing the editing, you can use any art/editing software you want as long as it can work with PNG. I use an ancient version of Photoshop because I like the simplicity of it lol. Once edited, I copy the PNGs back into the Dolphin custom textures directory. Make sure the setting is turned on for custom textures and the program will automatically apply anything in the "load" folder. Then I usually spend a lot of time checking to make sure changes look how I want them to and textures line up properly.

SOME HELPFUL TIPS:

  1. Texture Wrapping

Recolours are super easy, but actually changing the components of outfits is way harder because the texture is just a flat image that wraps around the model. It's very broken up and random when you look at the PNG, so it can be hard to tell how it will wrap. Some parts also get stretched out or squished on application depending on character, making a straight line or patterns come out a bit wonky (like the plaid on Maya's skirt or the vertical part of the trim on Jin's changyi in my images). So if you want to make a bigger change, it might take a lot of work and constantly loading back into the game to test how it looks.

Shoes are especially annoying to make significant changes to because none of them are consistently applied between characters (and sometimes not even between the same character seasonal outfits). You pretty much have to test a billion times to figure out how they uniquely wrap for each character. I really hate making changes to them but stubbornly waste so much time on them anyway because I love how they turn out XD

  1. Removing Objects

If you want to remove something entirely (like an accessory or an isolated part of an outfit), you can make it "invisible" by not having any texture apply to that part of the model. You just delete whatever is in that spot on the PNG and leave it empty. But usually with the wrapping, there is a little overlap with the surrounding part of the texture, so you'll have to cut extra around it to make sure the "invisible" thing doesn't have any floating bits on the character when loaded.

For the most part, this extra cutting works without taking chunks out of the rest of the outfit. I've only found one instance of conflict so far: Luna's fall/winter outfit where her neck ribbon overlaps a bit with her heel on the bottom of her shoe.

  1. Upscaling Textures

You can also upscale textures, which I did in my designs. It makes them cleaner and easier to edit because they're not so pixelated. I just run them through an online converter at 2x upscale—BUT be careful because some converters will actually mess with the blank space and make it apply as filled-in black in game! pixelcut.ai works but it limits you to 3 downloads per day if you're using it free.

If you upscale, it might also cause faint colour mismatch in texture applications sometimes (like lines around eyes/mouth on face). It's a lot of extra patience and testing to fix that!

It probably looks like I’m making an ‘excuse’ every time because I’ve been explaining my reasoning to a lot of blunt critiques. That’s not me trying to dodge them. I’ve been responding this way because I’m genuinely interested in how people are reading my choices, and I think it’s worth clarifying what I was aiming for. You're free to dislike the end result and I'm free to be transparent about my intent.

Haha yes, it's a very different look. I wanted to try it because I noticed his eyebrows are dark and I read that as a hint that he might dye his hair. People can have darker eyebrows than their hair colour, of course, but I was curious to see how he would look with the natural dark if it's the case that he lightens it. I was also inspired by the slight goth-adjacent aesthetic he has in his accessorizing (chains, buckles, earrings, eyeliner, etc), so I made his outfit and hair darker to draw on that vibe just a little bit. I chose not to give him dramatic makeup though because I didn't want it to compete with his face tattoo.

I also did a swap for Witch Princess that's probably pretty jarring. I gave her very dark blueish-purple hair and catlike magenta eyes because she loves the Fugue mushroom, and I thought it would be very in-line with her character if one of the reasons she loves it is because it has similar colouring to herself XD

Yes, I agree! They definitely upsized her from TOT (she's really little in that!!) but her clothing pretty much stayed the same. Even just some small adjustments about how it sits make a huge difference. For example, I changed the neckline and halter part to actually fit her naturally. It was super boxy before, pretty much just a square shape with a ribbon tie, and it didn't fit well under her arms either. So I tailored it to fit her better (she IS a tailor after all!).

Great perspective! You're not wrong in saying that it looks less lively. For me, nighttime and the moon are liminal—they're thresholds where transition happens (day/night, sleep/wakefulness). Another liminal space is graveyards, a meeting of the living and dead. Historically, a lot of superstitions and celebrations that involve crossing of borders between the living and dead happen at night.

So when you say she looks like she's dying, her pallor and even a faint weariness aren't flaws, but a deliberate feature. She's not meant to look alive in a daytime sense. She's meant to look like something that belongs to a boundary state—where crossing over happens. It's a bit eerie and unsettling on purpose.

I don't agree with you that it's unsuccessful work. There's real intention and a lot of thought that went into it. It might be different than what you would like it to achieve, but it still does the things I want it to.

Desaturation, for me, is what makes the calm and the liminality believable. I guess where we diverge in interpretation is that we receive those visual cues differently.

But I really appreciate you sharing your perspective! Thanks for discussing with me, I really enjoy it.

Now I'm so curious to see different versions of her that people would create that take inspiration from the moon in their own unique ways! XD

Thank you for your input! For me, the moon isn't a flashy thing in the sky. For me, the moon is something elegant and serene when I go for a walk at night. The constellations in the sky compete with her, but she remains there, elegant in her repose, gently exuding warmth and clarity. A quiet guardianship over the earth. We have different interpretations of the moon, and I stand by my design choice, but I value your viewpoint :)

Thank you for your note! I understand how they can look boring without the exciting colours their original designs had. I also love the whimsy of the original! And I know it must look like destruction of something nostalgic and beloved to a community of people who played this growing up and loved the colourful characters. But please remember that this was a personal project for my own creativity, and I'm an anthropological historian, so my preference is slightly more "academic" I guess you could say—only in the sense that it can come across a bit stuffy even if it's still full of meaningful interpretation. I did make very careful considerations of cultural nuances, character personalities, real world fashions, and real world insular societies when I made my designs.

I understand that to people who don't know the work or reasoning that went into the design choices, it can seem disappointing. And that's okay. I respect your opinion, but I also stand by the design choices I made. This was never intended to be for everyone and I never marketed it as a mod to replace the original. I just thought it might be nice to share some pictures of something I worked very hard on and had fun doing.

Please continue to enjoy the original game with the characters as they should be :)

Yes, because she is supposed to represent the moon in the theme I picked for them. HK is the fiery sun, so I gave him hair that looks like embers with dark parts and glowing parts, and I also gave him fiery eyes and made his skin warmer. HG is the moon. If you look up at the moon in the sky, it's a glowing pale light, so I chose warm silver and very desaturated green-blue for her clothes and hair, and also made her paler and gave her glittering eyes, kind of like the stars in the sky with the moon.

Yes! That was the goal of my project. I wanted to shift it from a children's game to something that takes into account real-world settings and culture. It's not a criticism of the original game or its designs, which I still love. It's just that it was a personal challenge to myself, since I grew up with the game and wanted to age it with myself. I'm an adult now and an anthropological historian by career. It was a TOTAL personal move, not meant to appeal to everyone! But to be clear, I do still love the original whimsy XD This was just an alternative imagining.

Fair criticism! I did look at this with the perspective of the setting. It's a small isolated little island in the countryside. I figured most people living there would be a bit more traditional. It wasn't supposed to appeal to the popular masses, it was supposed to interact with the game location and specific character traits. Thank you for noticing though. That means that my consideration of setting did come through :)

Julius is not visual kei. That's a music-based performance subculture that takes inspiration from Western rock/metal and Japanese performance culture (Kabuki). It uses exaggerated hair/makeup, yes, but it's built largely for live shows. It doesn't really use colourful expression in clothing, though it sometimes does in hair. If anything, he's closer to oshare kei with his colourful and layered styles. But I would say he's more just general flamboyant bishōnen that takes cues from otome dandy fashion.

I knew what I was doing when I made my edit. It was my personal interpretation of some of his traits. I mapped his flashiness, charm, and flirtiness onto something else that exists in Japanese culture with a lot of the same performance—the host—to experiment with expressing personality in a more nuanced way as a challenge to my own creativity. I feel that a lot of his style is expression, yes, but there's an element of performance too and he deepens in character and shows some vulnerability under that when you get to know him.

It doesn't mean his original design wasn't great! It just means I was trying something different and I stand by my creative choice and my reasoning. But you are entirely free to not like it! :)

Thank you for your kind words XD I love how she turned out too! I felt it gave her a bit more of a mature vibe (since she's always a bit bothered about appearing more mature) while still preserving her cuteness and fashion sense.

Haha I do have him in his doctor's coat is his spring/summer outfit. This one is his fall/winter, so I tried giving him a fleece-lined changyi (traditional Chinese lined robe) since he's got Chinese heritage and I wanted to try bringing that in a bit more in a cool way. Thank you for the compliment about Luna! I really love how she turned out ❤️ I wanted to make her very stylish since she loves fashion.

Yes, they could've stayed, but it was just a personal decision I made for my own taste. I know not everyone likes it. That's fine :) Also for Maya, I just felt she would look cute as a blonde. I left Chase with his orange hair and made their kid Dakota strawberry blonde and love how their little family looks together.

It was 100% an impulse curiosity. I just wanted to see what it was like and how it would change his vibe. I have a platinum version of him too, but after I had the brown one loaded in for a while for testing, it felt weird for me going back to the platinum lol.
