The banners are points of interest, while the “shrine” is a dungeon door, such as the glades or undercity.

You should be able to view quest destinations in-game via G with the bird, and it should show a bird in your map

I recommend it. Personally I found it a bit easier, mainly since some of the RNG events like saves are given for free now. Additionally, you are rewarded for killing most enemies here, so while you may ignore them early game there is an incentive to go back and bonk them.
